There was a time when Donald Curry’s name was in the mix as the best pound for pound fighter in the game. Thanks Rich

Thanks, great to see these early fights of Donald Curry. Living in the UK my first experience watching Curry was when he dismantled Colin Jones. Then he destroyed Milton McCrory and I began to think he could be an all time great. But, despite flashes of brilliance, since then things seemed to unravel. So sad to see the sudden decline of such a great fighter.

Donald Curry? Another forgotten champion that is overdue to receive his flowers. 👌

Yeah he was a glorious welterweight champion who had a great prime cleaning out the division

He was good not great. He received a gift decision in the first Starling fight.

Thanks RIch! Curry is my alltime favorite fighter. He was a picture perfect fighter. In many ways he was like the welterweight version of Larry Holmes in that he followed a legend who ascended the sport. The press would say he was boring or predictable, he didnt have the flash of Leonard or the gift of gab. I tried collecting all of his fights on VHS back in the day. I never saw these fights. I was kind of surprised how many times Reyes hit him and hard. I know it was just his third pro fight, but still. Kind of a premonition that even in 81 Curry was having trouble making 47. This would be an ongoing fight for him and eventual downfall. He did fall fast and shockingly. I never thought even in 86 that he could beat Marvin, but he was IMO the second best welterweight of the 1980's. The version of Curry who destroyed McCrory would have been hell for any welterweight in history. Fast and deadly. The hook that sank Detroit was one of the fastest I have ever seen. Thanks Rich I appreciate seeing these early fights!

My pleasure, Brian. I agree with you on Curry's form the night he faced McCrory, pure excellence.
@keithcampbell6806Ай бұрын
True you got that right. After the McCrory fight he should've moved to 154. I will say until l die had he done that he would've been a three division champ at the minimum.

Curry is one of those guys who fell off the rails with stunning speed. Offhand I can only think of one other fighter I followed when I got into boxing magazines and weekend network boxing programs in the 80s who fell from Future Legend to Opponent faster than Curry- Pinklon Thomas, who went from Successor to Holmes to cannon fodder in the blink of an eye.

I always thought Donald Curry was a great fighter and I was very surprised when Honeyghan gave him a boxing lesson. He looked like he lost the will to fight.

Do you plan on doing a docu on Roberto Duran. I know alot of others have already, but as a big Hands of Stone fan myself, I find that alot of them don't do him justice by simply giving the same old retelling of the no Mas fight and skipping over the prime of his years in fighting at lightweight. I mean we're talking about a guy that beat Ernesto Marcel and royal Kobayashi early in his career,, completely mauled Ken Buchanan, a great champion, had an amazing trilogy with Esteban de Jesus, koed ray Lampkin and sent him straight to the hospital and had a fiery rivalry with Edwin viruet. Then moved up and outboxed a fine fighter in Palomino. A man who gave Sugar Ray Leonard his 1st and only loss in the prime of his career. Making his record 72-1 at the time and winning him the welterweight crown. Who after having to overcome some lows in his career moved up to 154 to challenge and defeat Davey Moore for the jr. Middleweight title. A man who gave Hagler I think his toughest fight at 160, and who later at the age of nearly 40 beat the 6'1" Iran Barkley for the middleweight title, who had just a year prior stopped Thomas the hit man Hearns. All of this while being burdened with the weight of an entire country's rep. I truthfully believe that you are the only one that can do this man's story any true justice. A pro fighter from the mere age of 16 to the age of 50. And a Legend in the sport of boxing.

Thank you for the vote of confidence, Lime. I do plan to do an extended piece on Duran but it's a HUGE project as you can imagine. Will do it bit by bit, probably next year.
