Hamsho was very underrated, would of probably been the middleweight champion in the late seventies to early eighties but Hagler was around and he wasn't taking any prisoners.

I trained with Leo "the Kid" Saenz at the gym run by Eli Hanover. The gym was located above the strip bar - The Jewel Box. The bar is still there but the gym is gone. Eli's nephew was working the door as late as last year. Had the pleasure of watching many a sparring session between Leo and light heavyweight Lou Benson. Leo was quick and a hard hitter and held his own against the bigger man. Watched Leo fight at the local Steelworkers Hall several times, he won by KO every time there. But also watched him at the Capital Center get outclassed by Emil Griffith. At one time during the fight Leo looked to be hanging on but came out banging the next round in true warrior fashion. Leo did lose by a fair decision.

Very interesting. Do you remember a guy named Bobo Renfrow?

@@RichtheFightHistorian He may have been before my time or trained at Mack Lewis's gym - our cross town rival. The guys I trained with were Leo Saenz, Lou Benson, Johnny Wilburn, Marvin Mcdowell, Larry Washington, Eddie Saurerhouf and a few others who names escape me at the moment I was managed by Jimmy McCallister- top notch featherweight whose main claim to fame was a decision over Willie Pep. Pep KO 'ed him in the second round in the rematch

Between Tony Perez being the ref and his oblivious sadistic cornerman, Saenz is lucky to have gotten out of this is one piece.
