In 1980 I busted a move… I graduated High School (at eighteen), joined the US NAVY, Completed Basic Training, completed military A School Training, proposed to my High School sweetheart on the release date of this classic song… married her 2 months later, (6 months before MTV) and relocated to San Diego from NJ. I was nineteen. We are still married with many grand children today.

I have it on pretty good authority that this song was based on the real life experience of Elliot Scheiner. He engineered an mixed a bunch of the SD stuff, and he apparently was dating a much younger lady at the time. He worked on a bunch of big records and was working on an Aretha Franklin record or something during that time. He mentioned to this girl that he was working on an Aretha record, and she didn’t know who Aretha Franklin was, which is where the line comes from in the tune.
