With everything that has happened in 2020, the question of whether we live in a simulation has come up once or twice. Our guest today, Donald Hoffman, goes a step further, proving that the reality we see is false.
Donald Hoffman is a cognitive psychologist, author of The Case Against Reality, TED speaker, and professor at the University of California Irvine.

I like your idea..To add to it..I would like to say..If you are watching the movie but are still aware that the people in the movie are not real..they are acting out a pre-written script..and the scenery..well, they are just stage props..a car, a horse, a pet dog, a job, a wife etc. If you are also aware that there are camera men, sound men, lighting engineers etc..then I would call that being enlightened..and being in the now..in the moment..and not lost in some unreal fantasy. Still, knowing this, the answer still evades us..the absolute realisation evades us. That feeling that there is something still missing is still there. The reason is..we are not ready to completely understand. If we did..would we bother even trying to live this life..if we believe it to be fake and temporary. We would probably not understand even if it was glaringly obvious. We have to be spiritually more advanced than we are now..I mean..that's why we are here in the first place..to learn..to understand..too spiritually develop.

I’ve heard Donald Hoffman be interviewed about 5 times previous to this interview. I have to say you are by far the best interviewer. You kept quiet when he was explaining his hypothesis and didn’t but in until he had finished each part of his theories. Your thorough questions that took us deeper into his beliefs and then asking him to give you examples was brilliant. You want the truth. Excellent work! I’m happy I found this channel.

There is a difference between underestimating true consequences of systemic patterns & complexity of differing perspectives of human mindsets, and an actual incomprehensible craziness of any luck manipulation. Would you care to provide some examples of what examples did you have in your mind, so that we can enforce a quantum lock to enable an objective judgment of your opinion without wishful thinking? (Even from a meta-perspective, I consider this quantum lock to be necessary to ground against actual luck biases, which are far from being as straightforward as how a typical citizen would complain about stuff like work/money/government without looking at a bigger picture...)

@@scscyou Think about this from spiritual perspective , if i wanted to connect to some archetypal force outside the material matrix through some ritual or meditation you would get in mundane reality confirmation through synchronicities that are extremely random,very low chance of happening without the event that initiated them , the relevant symbols would appear or people would say something relevant to it that would be out of their character or awareness of the event and this can work through past as well as foreshadowing or a consequence of an action in future rippling out , its a very specific intuitive feeling when that causes you to pause when you actually see a relevant symbol/sign

Thanks for doing this interview. He says math is very important. I remember Kindergarten math. My teacher said we were going to learn "Addition", and he said 1+1=2. I said "I don't get it, your just counting, you didn't do anything. How can you add 2 things together and get two individual things as an answer"? I said "It's equal on both sides, but what did you do"? "If I add two balls of Clay together, ...I get ONE ball of Clay". I later graduated one college degree and finally gave up on the second degree. They never told me that there is "Counting" and that there is a concept of "Adding Things Together". America just wants me to remember things, not to think. They just want me to count and spend earned money.

When I went to Disneyland and went on their VR ride, I was amazed that someone could control the ride and make it feel just as real as any reality. We're strapped in and there are motions, mists, and simulated flying, etc, etc. I really began to think that our lives are just that. We live in a timeless spaceless universe and the only reality is what our minds perceive We mustn't let the programmers of the ride dictate what is real to us. We need to take back our ride and learn to program it with a more pleasurable experience for us and our fellow human beings. And always remember it's not real, it's just a ride.

Having spent three hours at the library doing research, I decided to head home for lunch. On Jan. 17, 2000, at 2 pm, while crossing a river bridge in Burswood (Perth, Australia) on my bicycle, I observed a velvet-textured beige pearl covering the sun. Within the entity, there were containers in the shape of elongated, seven-pointed Koch snowflake fractal crystals immersed in a white misty light travelling in a ten o'clock direction. I later considered that the light flashes on the inner space of the crystals might be of a binary language conversion pertaining to the senses of all mortals, that is, a holographic universe.

ancestor simulations its likely that we are being simulated by AI from the past looking in. Meaning Its possible the original humans are already dead/uploaded and that we are a kind of digital embodiment of them. This would not only apply to humans if other aliens existed it would make more sense to simulate their existence in a universe much like our own were they do not have any obvious occupants besides our selves. This might even be the reason for the multiverse existing. They are not full fledged universes per say more like a pocket universe that only exists long enough to simulate its inhabitants.

It's an interesting question, but perhaps a fundamentally unanswerable one. If Hoffman's theory is at least in the ballpark of being correct, any definition of consciousness would have to be quite broad. Hoffman himself has said that, at least according to his theory, consciousness and mathematics are inextricably linked, but consciousness is ultimately more than just math. So what can we take away from that? That even our best definitions and theories can only ever give us a glimpse into the whole of consciousness, but never the entirety. That said, I'd propose there's a more interesting question to pursue. If we are indeed collections of conscious agents, then at what point does human-esque intelligence and reasoning arise? Is there a certain number of agents that have to come together for this to occur - and if so, where does the intrinsic structure for said intelligence come from? It obviously wouldn't just be by accident and happenstance. There would have to be some preexisting basis for consciousness to derive the structure of what we call intelligence and rationality from. Is that what we'd call God?
@The666Miraculix
@The666Miraculix Жыл бұрын
"Is that what we'd call God?" That is George Berkeley's claim. (A treatise concerning the principles of human knowledge, 1710 Dublin) - Arthur Schopenhauer called the reality behind the interface theory "Will" and the interface theory itself "Representation". (The World as Will and Representation, 1819 Brockhaus Leipzig) - Immanuel Kant called the reality behind the interface theory "Thing-in-itself". (Critique of Pure Reason , 1781 Riga) PS: Donald Hoffman's interface theory corresponds to the "radical constructivism" of Ernst von Glasersfeld & Heinz von Foerster. But she was found in a different way. Radical Constructivism emerged in the 1970s.

I’m a physicist and former physics professor. I realized that physics is stuck in materialism and needs to reboot with consciousness being fundamental. That’s why I started studying metaphysics - it offers a completely different paradigm for reality with consciousness at the basis. This viewpoint of reality coming from an energy perspective allows for the description of conscious experiences, including near death (out of body) experiences, as well as all “paranormal” phenomena and reincarnation. There’s already a way to tap into that quantum field of consciousness using the apparatus of your “avatar” or “human suit.” Once you know that everything is energy, you can begin to manipulate the virtual reality of life to suit your liking (within the rules, of course). Physics is far too limiting of a view on reality; there’s so much more beyond that VR headset!

As time progresses, people becomes more susceptible to outlandish theories like Hoffman´s. The sheer flood of information is too much for the brain to cope with. We are bombarded with such theories. Objective reality is probably unknowable as we can never know for sure that we are percieving it as opposed to a deeper interface. Therefore, at any point in the 'dig' we may as well stop arbitrarly and say 'this interface is as reflecting of base reality as any we're likely to uncover'. That doesn't mean that we shouldn't persue our search for lower level interfaces of course, but ultimately that could impact our 'fitness'. It could be that abstaction always has and always will confer a crucial survival advantage.

A summation to it all in a story: There was a man once that became awakened. He gave away everything he had and went to live a spiritual minimalist life. A friend got in touch with him many years later and was shocked to see that he was living a very indulgent materialistic life. His explanation was that, after years of deprivation, he had a second awakening. He realized he was living on a planet, and in a society that had a game plan. He realized that it was indeed game, a simulation, an illusion, so why not play the game and just not take it seriously? What is, is what is. In our next journey, our next simulation, just do the same. That is the only road to take. Resisting is just spitting at the sky. It'll only land in your eye.

@@six1nyne Yes, we learn from the past and prep for the future, but we put too much thought into it. We become so obsessed with both that we do not fully live in the present. If you live life with the past weighing down on you, you make it define who you are now. You pigeon-hole yourself and limit yourself. "I never was a..." "I could never....". "I'm always..." "With my limitations I.....", etc. Dwelling on the future we say, "when I meet that right person, I'll be happy" "when I move there, I'll be happy" "when I get that other job, I'll be happy" "I can't wait till weekends here", etc. Everyone is guilty of it. Both things cloud our heads so much that we are not fully indulged into the moment. Notice today that people do things seemingly with the most important being to record it and have others see where you are, what you're eating, how you're dressed, who you're with, etc. THIS IS DISATERIOUS. That was a virtual reality that incorporated all 5 senses. Where as TV is not VR, & only incorporates sight & sound. The Human brain is a computer. So if having the capability to have a computor that provides all senses in a 4 dimensional platform; is indistinguishable from one's own reality outside of that VR Simulation.... ...How do we know that the Universe is not essentially just "The Hologramdeck" from Star Trek TNG??

His research describes the nature of our larger reality, provides a complete theory of consciousness, and explains our purpose and connection to that larger reality. While he does utilize the concept of living in a simulation of reality with our consciousness or rather (individual units of consciousness utilizing avatars to experience life as a sort of virtual reality, he has an entirely different and unique perspective of the nature of reality based on his own work, research and exploration of consciousness. Tom Campbell frequently encourages skepticism while still sharing his theories, experiences with expanded states of consciousness and all the wisdom he has garnered along his journey to offer his interpretation of life, life after death, and existence before the life experience.

I feel like Donald is actually talking about how things are i.e. we see an apple but the underlying facts of reality is that we are sensing light on our retina that our brains use to construct an image and from multiple images we construct a 3D model of the apple. If we reach out and touch the apple we sense the surface of the apple and it corresponds with the 3D model that we built from the images. The light that enters our eye is just wavelengths of various light. The key is that we are building meta-models of the world from a rich source of data i.e. atoms form compounds that form fibres that form objects.

I'm about 12 minutes in, and my first thought is: 1. He wondered if Natural Selection forced the Nervous System to implement Abstraction Layers over generations to simplify perception and survival. These Abstraction Layers would be based on Ingress Information compactification through refactoring and deletion of unnecessary Information. 2. He ran tests to see if Natural Selection favored these Abstraction Layers. 3. He had a mathematician confirm statistically that it does, based on the results of the experiments. But this is not news. This was practically assumed by all scientists involved in the nature of perception leading up to and within the Post-Modern Era. Alfred Korzybski described this in his study of General Semantics with the Structural Differential, which consisted of variably-shaped objects with Holes to represent data points, and strings to map data point to corresponding data point between each Object. Each Object represented anything from biochemical processes/steps in the Nervous System's steps for perception, to individual components within those processes. If we wanna consider an abstract, compactified reality to be a "Simulation" just because it's not 1-1 in terms of Information available to and consumed by the Nervous System, that's cool. But that doesn't imply for a moment that this definition of "Simulation" matches what we're actually talking about in general when we say "Simulation". You could say our brains are "simulating" reality based on compactified information received about it, but we couldn't possibly argue that something external to what we're perceiving is providing the inputs to our Nervous Systems (ie a Simulator) based on this notion alone, which is what we all actually mean when we say it. A physics major could use math and some inputs to describe exactly how an event can evolve in spacetime geometrically, as well as by weight and energy, to the extent that we don't need more information to have extremely accurate predictions. Therefore, it doesn't really matter if the information is compactified. Having to perceive and reason about a non-compactified reality would be exhausting and physics has generally told us that it's likely impossible and ultimately not useful anyways The only reasons the Simulation Hypothesis would even be worth investigating is if we suspect: - That the simulation has an End Condition that we have some form of control over (In which case it's in our best interest to avoid it while appearing in all ways to be pursuing it, just in case someone is watching the Simulation.) - That the notion that we live in a Simulation implies an exploitable property of our Reality that wouldn't exist in a non-Simulated Reality (Like resource usage for the "Simulator", vulnerabilities in its logic that lets us break its rules, etc.) But our current understanding tells us neither of these reasons are likely, nor are they arbitrary or safe to understand in our stage of Evolution.

The best example I can think of to support your theory is the notable results of a group of people exposed to a short term, dramatic event perpetrated by one or more persons. When questioned about the features of the one or many, every witness gives a different description. This 'reality' has always confounded law enforcement.

They are just instruments that transmit raw data. It is the interpretation of the data that conveys experiences. All experiences are constructions of the mind. Everything is in the mind first. The body is just an interface. How magnificent is the mind-body connection. Peace. Mike

When I was very young, I remember having the notion that whenever I’m not looking at people, that they became simply a swirl of colors. As soon as I looked they would resume human form. I am now 40 and to this day I cannot prove otherwise. Perhaps it’s true like the double slit experiment.

I have not listened to the entire video and I’m not religious but the key point I heard Hoffman say is he is trying to prove a higher level of reality - consciousness. In that regard my interpretation of what he was trying to convey is that because he believes consciousness is the highest level of reality our bodies are akin to a biological virtual reality interface with us experiencing life but while in that state we are unaware of the higher level of reality. Thus, we are living a real existence but unaware of the higher conscious state. If that is true and there is a higher conscious state then our bodies are only a temporary vessel. That doesn’t mean it is not reality but it is temporary based upon that hypothesis. Think in terms of people who convey life after death experiences. They appear to perceive a higher level of perception/consciousness where time and space as we know it no longer exist. Thus, he appears to be attempting to prove we have a soul/consciousness and experience life within the confines of what he describes as our virtual reality host/body while our soul is in our again what he describes as our virtual body. So, from that standpoint we are experiencing reality in our current state with a physical host body and thus can’t perceive the higher conscience state he is trying to prove - what religions call a soul.

In some sense it is an obvious truism that we do not perceive reality. We do not perceive electrons or proton!s... We do not perceive that most of “matter” is empty space... we do not perceive quantum fields. But, what ever it is that we think we perceive.... that “perception of reality” somehow corresponds to “actual reality” sufficiently to be useful to our survival.... which makes our perception “true enough”

Even Jesus coming from the future to be born in the past to reach us. The fact he walked on water, calmed the storms, was never rushed would all signify he knew he was In a form of a simulation.

I don't think it's stupid. It's a different way to think of reality, so thanks for sharing. Actually? The last part you mentioned reminds me of Schrödinger's cat. No one knows all. We all learn and I suppose as we do so, the experiences, the attachments we place upon experiences and inner understandings, shape the way we perceive consciousness. Then there's the aspect of mindful awareness imho which is like the awareness watching the avatar that is our body in this human body-mind paradigm. But... we could all be wrong. I think that physics, quantum theory and mechanics are fascinating because of many unknown variables. Personally, it's fascinating to walk into learning about the potentially unknowable. That's my plan and intention. I would postulate there must be "something" within the human spirit given the thirst for knowledge. That indomitable human spirit is something to behold.
