This isn't Trump's first attempt at running for President. He ran in 2000 and called it quits in February. He also ran in 2011 for the 2012 election and opted out for his TV Show.

Trump was a middling businessman, then he did a bunch of cameos in movies, then he ran for president in 2000, then he did "The Apprentice", then he started endorsing products, then the Apprentice got really big, then he quit or got let go and tried to be a businessman, again. Then, while in the middle of trying to be a businessman, after being let go from "Apprentice", just before which he expressed interest to run in 2016, then failed in business and became president, all in one go... on the first try... if that's what he was trying to do. Which, as any cat will tell you after a fall, is exactly what he meant to do but had hoped nobody was watching as he did it.
