My brothers and I are triplets, and it's incredibly difficult to find one cake that all three of us are happy with. Thanks to you, Donal, I think I've finally found a recipe that will work for our birthday this August (and yes, I do make my own birthday cake - see fussy brothers above). Thanks a lot!

I was in such a gloomy mood the day before my birthday. The weather was unpleasant, the deadlines were coming closer and closer... BUT! I came home and made this cake and IT. IS. GREAT. Honestly, i felt filled with chocolate before even tasting it, just from the smell :). Instead of the syrup, can I use only honey? Is the syrup really necessary?

I imagine you could, but it would alter the taste. I've tried swapping golden syrup for honey a few times before, and the resulting flavour has been hit and miss. If you're a fan of honey though and don't mind it combined with chocolate, it sounds like a viable substitute.
