It's Detroit. They have no money and corrupt leaders. Sadly, there is probably a great deal of truth behind the City's response: fire apparatus does require certain degrees of certifications, inspections, etc. Aerial ladders can loose their integrity and be, potentially, dangerous to use. The donated truck looks like it is early-80's era. Equipment needs to be tested and certified, etc. It's probably why they didn't have equipment available at the time: rigs were down for repairs, waiting on parts, waiting for money to buy parts, etc. Detroit does have stories of rigs breaking down when responding, catching fire while under operation, etc. Aerial trucks, especially, are quite expensive to buy and maintain.

The thing I think the outside world can’t see that the firefighters can see is that the truck that the man donated is old, it appears to be from the 1980’s. Those trucks are out of date, they may work but they can pose a threat to the departments firefighters and the public itself. It may work fine but the technology in the trucks these days has increased dramatically and that a truck of that age may work and operate fine, but it doesn’t have the technology today that it needs.

The city spokesman said "it would require significant repairs and upgrades to meet new demands" because of sitting in storage for years, and that the city didn't need a new ladder truck anyways. The truck was donated in pristine operating condition but has now begun falling apart because of sitting unmaintained for so long.
@chetw31394 жыл бұрын
@@MrWolfSnack So, they didn't use it. Let it sit there till it fell apart. Then when they looked into scrapping it and got pushback, said it was falling apart? I wonder why it was falling apart, could it be that you never used it in the first place? That instead of taking care of a donation you just let it sit and rust? As for environmental concerns of using an old fire truck that people bring up. If that's the case why do so many communities still use and even buy the old ones? Is it just that you have a local regulation about it for the city vehicles? As for people saying that it doesn't have modern equipment. That newer vehicles would run way better. First off, the city of detroit's newer vehicles break down all the time. This lead to the little girl's death. Based on the fact that many communities still use firetrucks like that one, it means it can be reliable. (If you don't let it sit unused till it's rusted out that is. Aka, if you actually take care of it!) Why not have an old reliable, espically when it comes to saving lives? Finally I'm gonna agree with most people here now knowing the information you've so kindly given me. If they were never planning on using the truck, why did they accept it in the first place. Ignoring the color and certification process, you had it sitting there for years. That takes up valuable space that the city was paying for. So if the truck doesn't get used then they just wasted a bunch of money on nothing. Seriously people. If you aren't gonna use it, don't accept it. If you do accept it, take responsibility for it and use it, don't let it sit there not only losing value but eating up taxpayer dollars. As for the certification process, if you knew that you wouldn't be willing to pay for that, why accept it in the first place? Just tell him no, that it would cost to much to begin with. Then he could go donate it to some other community in need of that truck. It doesn't matter if this was detroit, or some small rural town. If you don't think something would be useful to you, then don't accept it. My bet is that they planned to scrap it from the beginning. Thinking it would be a quick way to make a buck. Maybe they'd take that money and reinvest it into the department, who knows? However after that ceremony they probably realized that public backlash would be an issue. So they let it sit till they thought people had forgotten about it. Then they tried to make their move. If the goal was always just to turn the thing into cash, just refuse the vehicle. Give the reasons why you can't take it, and then state the amount of money you believe it would take to fix up the current rigs...etc. Then get donations from the guy and anyone else willing to donate.

As my fire departments engineer I don't think people fully appreciate the annual testing and specs all fire equipment must go though. Those ladders can eat up money quick to repair. After years of service their is a reason a half million dollar truck sells for $10,000 or less and sometimes your praying it brings that much. A local fire department we run everyone of their calls with them. They have trucks that have never been tested or when they had they failed. Tires so bad they were flat most of the time. Both trucks were "Homemade" in the 1970s. We had two 20 year old trucks (A 2001 Pierce engine 1000 gallon tank 1250 pump with CAFS. A 2000 GMC Top Kick with 2000 gallon tanker solid stainless steel tank and body with air actuated rear dump and side dumps it had cross lays and porta pond carrier with port a pond. Plus it came fully equipped with everything. One person could haul water like mad with it. A 750 gallon pump that always pumped 1100 GPM at tests. Both had full maintenance records and had passed all the pump tests and everything was in perfect brand new condition. We begged the other department to buy them for $1 each. They were both bought and put in a first out trucks by other depts.

Firstly, this truck is outdated. Thats why at best its useful as a training rig. The DFD would have to paint it, pay to have it inspected and certified and if needed, repaired. It also needs to be NFPA compliant. This all costs money that Detroit does not have. For their run volume, this truck would not meet their demands. It may work for a small town but a big city? No way. Not sure why the DFD accepted it when they should have just been upfront and honest and say they didnt need it or could not use it so the donor could have found another home for it. This reminds me of a local guy who wanted the county EMA to have a mobile command post. He purchased this old ambulance for EMA to spend tax dollars to convert to a command post and they told him they dont want it. Now the dude is stuck with an old ambulance.

There is a lot of stuff the public never sees. I’m sure EVERY hydraulic hose must be replaced every 24 months. (Even if not used) every operator must be certified. It must pump x hundred gallons in set time... 1970 if it worked, it’s good. 2000 it must be inspected, certified, meet requirements. (Often ones that make zero sense for area). Local depot had to get new pumper truck. Old one was in perfect shape, never a issue, plenty of ability... but to qualify for lower insurance rating for city. It needed to pump 8% more then it’s max rating new. I NEVER heard a complaint they lacked pressure. (A few the tanker trucks fell behind filling draw tank). So they had to reduce pressure, cut hoses to conserve water remote locations. So why have a larger pump? A added tanker (at 10% cost) no new training... was more needed.
@jaysmith14084 жыл бұрын
Hoses not necessarily need to be replaced, especially with use due to absence of dry rot, and operators don’t need to be technically certified for it, just be familiar with it, so just six guys, the drivers of each shift at the station, will get familiar with it. The city could require that all drivers city wide would need to take a familiarity course on it, but that’s excessive. Our guys are able to operate effectively any apparatus on the scene, they’re different, but not THAT different.

This has to do with race.. period. Donated by the white man, and a slap to the face by the black African community organizers. allowing white folk, helping black folk, in their own communities.

Detroit didn't really want the truck in this method. Had they really wanted a "pumper" truck bad enough, they would have gone through their usual suppliers which likely include kick backs etc. This donated truck, even if it needed some upgrades or maintenance, is still better than no truck at all...no major cash outlay, just a few repairs for a pumper or back up truck. You can't believe any other reason why a $300,000+ savings of City money would be unimportant. La La goes their story but only after it became a public issue. Those in charge want no help in their purchasing methods as it means less kick backs. This is what happens when politicians are given jobs that should be held by educated and experienced professionals in said field. Just like California, politicians are running the forest management, the power grid or CA ISO, CPUC and a host of other jobs in their power distribution companies (PG&E, Sempra, So CA Edison). Those with the education, experience and knowledge of these premium jobs should be there, not politicians who are "appointed" vs. earned the job. This is why California burns down every year, they have blackouts and have problems with their water reclamation such as Oroville Dam that failed due to political vs. engineering expertise running the show. It's amazing these idiots never see the inside of a penitentiary as they fail the public over and over year by year. It's very obvious that having a political job means unjust income and decisions as an everyday requirement.

The truck was trash when they got it. The ladder failed a state inspection and the city had a independent inspection done and it failed that to. It’s to tall to fit in most fire station in the city. No fire fighter would get in it cause it was e death trap.

@@alterboyjohn They never should have taken it in, in that case.

The truck is outdated and a money pit. Detroit does not have the money here to pay for the extensive and expensive. repairs..

then donate it, sell it off.

Look on line for a truck from the mid eighties that has been out of service and see how much the current owners will pay you to take it off their hands. This truck is worth little more then scrap value if that much

What a good man how are they being that dumb too not use the fire truck, even if it’s not going too perform as good as the others at least still have it ready and occupied so you never let a little girl burn too death on the top floor cause you don’t have a ladder truck ready, use your brain it’s the principle if it can move and lift its ladder use it there’s 0 harm too have professionally trained group of volunteer fire fighters ready too assist with it when something fails.

Thing looks like 80s truck. Prolly needs hella work done too it

I doubt, the donor would not haul a truck that would cost hella money to repair to Detroit, all it will do it gain dust cause the politions wont grant the FD money for whatever problem happend at the fire
@Arizonafinalboss7 ай бұрын
I would buy it for $17

Don't believe everything you hear on the news. What they don't tell you in this story is that the damn thing didn't run and needed a complete engine overhaul. That's a considerable sum of money.
@hamsteroftf24024 жыл бұрын
might as well just kick the bucket and buy a fresh one lol. I doubt they would find the right engine from 1980s

Clearly everybody commenting isn't a firefighter, and that shows. This truck can't be put into service due to it being an open cab in the back. NFPA which regulates everything fire service states that's no open cabs should be allowed for service. Small town departments might get away with it, but no big city department would. You people are all so ignorant and are totally clueless but yet that doesn't stop you from all commenting.... Our world is pathetic
@joker4328 жыл бұрын
JESSE VANPOOL wow dude please remain quiet, you have NO IDEA what you are talking about. You seriously think a small town department can afford a conversion from an open cab to a closed cab? Seriously!?!?!?!?!? Oh yes this dept can't afford a new fire truck but they can afford $100,000+ for a cab conversion. People are so stupid is unbelievable.....
@legohead67 жыл бұрын
Your right, anything is possible.. but that doesn't mean it should be done or is smart to do. Ive never been a firefighter, but have been around commercial trucks a lot. And old trucks are nothing but unreliable money pits. Even if $100,000 was spent on a cab conversion, its still an old truck with old equipment and possibly a tired engine, who knows when any of these critical components will fail. Unreliable trucks are bad enough when its only an unhappy customer on the line. I cant imagine when someones life is potentially on the line.

It's not a 'people mover' ...it still has a cab for an officer and driver. It just needs to get there. Sitting two years is a crime, send it to the Nicaraguan Bomberos then where ANY equipment is badly needed and APPRECIATED.

Take your NFPA, OSHA and other BS and shove it where the sun doesn't shine. If you have working equipment, use it.
