I cannot believe today was the first time YT suggested one of your videos. You explained glazing in a way that I actually understood. I can't wait to try it. I also like how you show your mistakes and how you fixed them, not enough YT painters show their mistakes and how to correct them, and that is more valuable to painters watching videos on techniques.

One suggestion, to avoid the chalky look of drybrushing, is to only do downward strokes of the brush for the underpainting. This way, the drybrush acts like rays of light going in one general direction. When the brush strokes go up and down, it creates a more rocky or dusty look. Great video! Cheers!

Hey! I think downward strokes when doing they grey underpainting. You can even get a smoother result when you use those very soft makeup brushes (do not ask me what it is called, blending brushes?) - they help somewhat avoiding the chalky/dusty look if you want to. Not quite an airbrush but with some practice you can get quite close.

As you said at the end of the video, a practical video on this technique. Very interesting and intriguing…. I’m working on a diorama base representing the moon surface made of a base where I applied sand texture paint, followed by real stones and pebbles. All then primed with matt black and then.I’m drybrushing it with different shades of grey. Any suggestions/tips on completing it? I do not think washes will be needed, though. What do you think? Thanks a lot!

If you want to lose that chalky texture when you are dry brushing it's actually surprisingly easy. Do everything like you normally would when dry brushing, but once you have wipe the majority of the pigment out of your brush dab it into a semi moist sponge, like a stippling motion to add back a small amount of moisture. Wipe it off once the dry it a little then go at the dry brushing. You get the same effect as if you were drybrushing with a gloss acrylic and can do it with any color paint.
@DonSuratos
@DonSuratos 2 жыл бұрын
Screenshot! I will test and give it a try. However, I do not clean on tissue anymore and using the glass palette gives me a semi moist dry brush already. ☺️

Another great video, I just started painting and trying this glazing technique is great. 1 question. By the time you have glazed 3 layers the under painting does not seem to show through. Is that right?
@DonSuratos
@DonSuratos 2 жыл бұрын
Hi. Depends on the amount of glaze medium you add bro. If tou add less medium, the more opaque the paint, the less the underpainting will show through. However, since you did underpainting, painting ANY color is much more easier than painting over black primer directly. Also you kinda create volume the fastest way, with underpainting. ☺️🎨🎨🎨
@mattdawson9980
@mattdawson9980 2 жыл бұрын
@@DonSuratos thanks for the quick reply. I just wasn't sure if I was still supposed to see some of the under painting once I had glazed. Think I should thin a little more or use less layers.
@DonSuratos
@DonSuratos 2 жыл бұрын
@@mattdawson9980 Really depends bro. Since drybrushing is rough, you may want to apply more layers or less medium to eventually cover it up, and just use the values for volume. However, if you are glazing leather or rough armor, you may add more medium as you might want to show more of the rough underpainting. Was I clear? 😅

I agree I lose all control of the pigment at a certain point of dilution with water, but I use flow improver instead of medium, it may contain some of the same agents IDK. It is challenging to do fine detail with a small brush that carries a small amount of thinned acrylic paint because as you said it cures so quickly and typically you do not want to carry a lot of paint and I usually wick some to a paper tower before application, I have come to prefer very opaque acrylic inks that withstand dilution a lot better for basing and washes but I really like using oil over acrylic because I can safely remove or add without effecting the acrylics without clearing the piece though I usually clear them anyway just to be cautious and I find them more controllable as a pin wash or filter. Personally, if I had done the zenithal as you did on this character I would have stopped after the first layer of yellow and left it translucent, I thought it looked superior then to cover the zenithal almost completely.

Flow improver is basically a thinned down Retarder Medium. It will work, but consistency of the paint is not the same and it will not add transparency. However, flow improver, is also better than just water. Flow improver dissolves the paint better and will also soften the paints a little. Cheers! ☺️🎨🎨🎨

I do paint with different mediums very often. And every medium is different. My beloved Vallejo glaze medium wasn't avaible at my hobby store so I bought the one from AK. But this behaves totally different. At the moment I don't like it but I'm sure I will find a niche where it will be perfect for one job. Sometimes I switch between glaze, thinner, flow improver and retarder medium in one paint session. They all have a very different feel to them.
@DonSuratos

Agree except for the flow improver. The flow improver is just a thinned down ( with alcohol ) Retarder medium. Just use a watered down Retarder medium than flow improver. Although, flow improver is also better than just water. Cheers! ☺️🎨🎨🎨

Glaze medium helps in keeping the paint pigments/particles in flat/thin layer and wet/runny which eezes the flow. water evaporates so extremely fast with acrylic paints. plastic is less porous than paper, even with primer.

I guess I'm struggling to see the difference here between thinning and layering and "glayering"? I thought glazing was a technique to create subtle chromatic shifts on top of a colour. Could you describe the difference between standard layering and "glayering" for me?

Basically you are doinglayering, but with semi transparent colors. Thus glazing whichyou are right sir, is laying down transparent paints to smoothen defined transitions from basic layering. Was it the video or my voice over that made it unclear? Thanks for watching.
