Wonderful video. I first visited this little railway (correction Narrow Gauge railway) when I was 15, on a Youth Hosteling trip to North Wales. That was back in 1967, so many years ago. Little has changed and it is good to see that these snippets of bygone days are still with us. Don, your videos are great. I see them on a 4HD screen, and the definition and colours picked up by your cameras are amazing. I really enjoy these trips to a country which I left so long ago. I now live in Canada but grew up on the LNER main line in Thirsk, 12 mins north of York at 125 mph.
@doncoffey58202 жыл бұрын
You’ll have seen the videos covering Newcastle and Middlesbrough no doubt 👍. Getting the footage to an acceptable standard has been a long process. You’ll notice the early attempts were very wide angle and often drab colours. I established that GoPros handles the motion best but it’s only the later models that give a more natural perspective and vivid colour so they’ve evolved with me. I’ve now got three cameras (two out with Freightliner) and we are getting good footage. My mate Vinny at Freightliner is now expert at filming and goes to the same trouble of keeping glass clean and the cameras mounted properly etc so it’s all come good. Transport for Wales and Metrolink did their own filming with my cameras and you’ll see it’s pretty good even on a large screen. I can’t really go to 4k because on these long films the file size is immense and as you say it is acceptable enough. All the best Richard 👍

I visited the line several years ago in October. Not unexpectedly, the weather was wet; so the guard escorted my wife and I, and a mother and her child who were the only other passengers to our coach with a very large umbrella. It is a charming and very interesting railway and just as worth visiting as the other narrow gauge lines in Snowdonia. I wonder what the workers at Hunslets in Leeds would have thought if they'd been told that the little utilitarian locos they'd built for the Welsh quarries would be tourist attractions a hundred and more years later.

Hope all is well with you Insurgent. You know that railway was in constant use all day and as you can see it was dry so all I can think it it’s an effect of the flat rail head spreading the weight.

It’s a really nice little video I think but what surprises me is it doesn’t get many views.

Quite a contrast to 125 MPH on the ECML, but equally as interesting and both video and captions to the usual high standard. Thanks Don.

I understand the very high voltage cables that connect the power station to the distribution yard run below the ground parallel to the rails.

There is a little bunker in the cab. I think my camera leads trailed through it in one direction.

Another superb presentation Don.....many thanks! I’ve driven by this railway but have never visited it....I now plan a trip as soon as I can. Is the delightful dog yours? I have a suspicion she is! I didn’t know about the underground power cables and it reminded me of the cables that cross under Southampton Water from Warsash to the now closed Fawley/Calshot power station, built in the mid 1960s (the grid switching station is still operational) and soon to be demolished. Before the tunnel was actually opened and in use my late father who was in charge of the main civil engineering projects on the site took me to see the tunnel and the troughs that carried (and still carry) the 275kV (I think) super grid three phase routes under the water. I seem to remember these cables were insulated and cooled by oil, the heat being exchanged to the cooling water in special heat exchangers at either end of the several miles long tunnel. Perhaps the same techniques are used for the buried cables on this delightful route? I know of another railway (unfortunately closed) ....the original Castleman’s Corkscrew main line from Southampton to Dorchester....near where I lived between Ashley and West Moors in Dorset where a very large main fresh water pipe uses the old route, with an extremely popular footpath above it. Thanks for your presentation...a bit different, with no AWS pings and driver alerted sounds being heard. Very restful indeed, more please Sir! Regards, from Rob in Bournemouth.

Hi Rob. The little dog wasn’t mine, she was in the next compartment and kept sneaking under the seats to say hello. The rest of the time she had her out out of the window so I just thought she should be included. Fascinating info about Farley. I did visit years ago and remember a level crossing (I think).
