Laid-off, fired or terminated? Say this...

If you were laid off and you were a top performer, here is how you can explain why you were laid off to employers and interviewers. Getting laid off sucks, but it's really easy to bounce back from it and get another job. The trick to explaining laid off is to talk about what you were doing while you were laid off, not why you were laid off. If you were terminated, you need to explain why. Getting terminated is slightly different getting fired. Fired usually means you were doing a poor job, but if you were fired, I'll teach you how to explain it without making yourself look bad. I was terminated from my previous job suddenly due to low performance after 1.5 yrs...except 5 months prior I was given a good review, a raise (same thing with the year before), and I was NEVER made aware of my terrible performance and I was NEVER given a chance to fix it. I literally walked into work that day and they let me go. The worst part is the VP of the department knew I wanted to move up (as I had expressed many times before) so 2 weeks prior to being terminated I asked him what I could improve on and he said nothing. So it is my belief that I was actually laid off due to cut backs and they're calling it something else so I wont get state benefits. I have an interview tomorrow. Wish me luck explaining that to them.

@Angela I had several interviews around this time so I don't remember specifically which one it was but yes I ended up getting one of the jobs I interviewed for, and I'm still there. I didn't realize how toxic my previous workplace was until I got here. I'm much happier now 😁

Redundancies are a fact of life in today's world. It's nothing to be ashamed of, and there are very few people who will go through their career without having this experience at least once or twice. 99% of the time it's them, not you.

I put off knee surgery for almost a year. Finally had to do it and was laid off before I even returned. Was with the company 9 years and shame on me I was doing senior manager work for Jr level pay. It was actually a blessing I needed the push to move on. I disagree the weakest people are let go. In the case of my company they want to keep the lowest paid in the department.

I would beg to differ with you on that. Would you rather keep your low performers or your high performers? You can keep your low performers and pay them less money and make a lot less money

@@DonGeorgevich Not really. If someone told me that they were injured and then fired, it would sound more plausible than "I was one of the best, but they were downsizing". If companies keep their best performing employees and you were the best, the new employer's mind is going to race with scenarios. Why would they fire their best worker when downsizing? Honesty is the best policy and there are bosses and CEO's who unfortunately can't clearly see which worker is best, especially in jobs in which performance is difficult to measure (e.g creative professions).

Both scenarios are true and do happen. I've seen some very good performers let go and poor performers. One guy had been at the company a long time and was considered the go-to guy for knowledge of how the systems work and collaboration. It didn't matter when the bean counters decided to axe a large chunk of the company.

I was fired but was because of discrimination against me and settled for a sum with my previous employer through the state but, I agreed to not talk about the terms of my termination. I struggle in interviews to explain the situation.

It is in marketing, sales, ads and it is what gets people to spend money on things. Think of yourself as a product and advertise yourself to the company in a way that sounds tempting. Soda brands don't advertise their products as made from corn syrup and can make you fat and unhealthy, they showcase the tempting and enticing parts, the crisp feeling of carbonated bubbles, the sweet taste of sugar. Showcase yourself so that the manager and the company want to spend money on you.

It's only ever happened to me once. What worked well for me was to say "there were only 3 of us to choose from to drop from the company and I volunteered to leave. I know what skills I have to offer and my former boss will happily take a professional reference call." 3 days later I was offered the job.

“Other companies don’t let their best people go, they let their weakest people go.” If only this was always true. But often, institutions let their most experienced, best performing people go because those people COMMAND appropriate pay for their knowledge, skills and abilities. You can’t demean someone who knows their value, or get away with paying them less than what they’re worth. Many companies manage through intimidation and - if they find out they can’t intimidate you - they’ll let you go even if it means a drop in performance or having to pay unemployment. So many managers (not the same thing as leaders) can’t stand having people on their team they can’t control.

Definitely not true that companies always let their "weakest people" go in a layoff. Reductions in workforce happen for all kinds of reasons - not just downsizing. For example, a company may decided to change priorities and end development on a product/service/game/film (regardless of how great the work on it is) - and so they let the whole team go that worked in that area. It happens all the time. Saying you were laid off does not automatically equate to you being "weak" in a recruiter or hiring manager's mind.

I hate when they ask what you been doing since you was laid off. It is dumb but when i was laid off, it had only been a month and i had spent the first week moving house and the follow 3 going to interviews, surely a month isn't considered too long? It was to one employer, they said "you have been out of work for 3 weeks now, don't you think that's a long time?" I was in disbelief. Of course didn't get the job but didn't care, got a much better paying one just two weeks later, they never even asked about this gap. When i questioned them (once hired) they said "anyone who was made redundant or laid off is going to take a average of 6 weeks to find a new job, we never question any less than 8 weeks, after that we ask but don't judge unless its been extensive amounts of time", so much better work place.

I was laid off because I was the last brought in on a project after three other engineers who had three years head start on me. Company was down sizing and they got rid of the one who knew the system the least. This after 12 1/2 years of being principal engineer on one of their most profitable products.

I was bully in my job for my team, they made jokes about my accent, nationally and just for a little mistake they complained with my supervisor. I complained twice with HR and once with my supervisor and they fired me. This happened 2 years ago and basically I cannot find a job, specially in the biotech field., I have some interviews, and the only options that I have now is low hourly jobs, what can I do? I think this company called Pacira Pharmaceuticals in San Diego Ca just banned me from the biotech field.

Hi Don! I was laid off but the company was going through some financial reassessment and being that I was the newest they laid me off. I went to an interview and the interviewer asked me "was there any writing on the wall" or "why didn't you ask them why you got laid off" honestly I felt it was intrusive. I didn't want that job anyway but still how could I have answered her follow up questions. Thank you!

I was TERMINATED from my job of 7 years because I was operating the company truck while using my phone. The company has a policy that if any driver(me) is caught using their mobile phone while driving a company vehicle ONE TIME, then they will be terminated. Yes...no warning. no counseling, no write-up ..just ONE TIME and you're terminated. I have an interview coming up in a couple days, how do I explain that I got terminated by being on the phone while operating a company vehicle? BTW this job I'm interviewing for is NOT a driver position, it's a Warehouse position. Thank you in advance!

Keep in mind they put me on a production plan goal for 2 weeks before being laid off because I was having issues hitting the goals sometimes. But I crushed it and passed. Two of the people on my team were laid off, me after 21 years at the company. Company has to cut costs, we cost more, so they eliminated two positions. The other 10 on the team divided up the work of the two. BTW I got a raise based on my performance a month before I was laid off. Didn't need the raise that bad.

I just feel though if they were downsizing and you were the best, why didn't they let someone else go first? I guess if you have really good relation with the company and they actually got rid of a whole department maybe and you can put them on your reference list its ok because they can verify if you were actually great.But If the person got fired and didn't have a good relation with their employer and only them got "downsized" what should they say ?

Question: I worked 10 years for previous employer... after that I had a job better job offer in next company, but that turned out to be too long of a commute for me... so got closer job to home, but my dad got severely sick and needed to be closer to him in case of emergencies. He got better , and living in east coast, I wanted to give him a better life so we moved to texas where I got job for 3 years. In my search for a new position, should I omit the short term jobs of less than 1 year, bringing a gap of about 2 years? Or is the job hopping after the 10 year job ok to include in my resume?

Hey Don, after 17 years my employer fired me for misconduct even though they have no “Employee discipline Report(Write Ups) on file related to the verbal accusations and incident reports. My rights to progressive discipline process were violated and a wrongful termination. Do I have a case to sue. Now I have no job. I want to apply for unemployment I’m in CA but afraid they will turn me down because of the false allegations of misconduct label, or should I apply, lie and say Layoff, reduction in workforce. My old employer says they don’t give any additional information to anyone regarding your employment by law, only if they would rehire? If I lie to EDD & they investigate, I’ll have some credibility problems and possible loose of approval of unemployment claim? Help
