Thank you for this one! As a Detroit-area kid who watched many a Sparky Anderson interview, I always found his impression to be UNCANNY. I've thought about it a lot over the years, good to be able to confirm how well he did it.

My pastor was from Indiana. I remember him saying Spacial instead of special. And he had the same mannerisms as Dave, so that the first time I saw Dave, I recognized them and yelled, “Dave is from Indiana!” And I married the pastors son, so I recognize the Indiana style really dumb guy totally.

My wife and I watched Dave before and after the move-he was our kind of irreverent. How any thinking person can listen to a hosts monologue today is beyond me. Thank you for this posting.

i know! i always say the same thing... Letterman was the best. He originally didn't even do a monologue (allegedly strict orders from Carson himself) and when he did kinda start with the show kick-off it would usually only be 3 or 4 jokes read off the cue cards. Like Music being the silence between the notes - Dave's best was the humor between the scripted jokes.
