Funny. I remember back in the 80's people specifically shitting on pop wank like Huey Lewis for being talentless studio production hacks. Not REALY music like WHATEVER THE WRITER'S FAVORITE 70'S BUTT ROCK BAND WAS. And those bands weren't anything compared to 60'S BAND WRITER LIKES or 50'S BAND WRITER LIKES Yeah. Fuckin' Del Shannon was the height of music. 🙄

Me too. his music helped transform a generation of drug addicted hippies from the late 70's into the yuppies of the 80's. He proved that it was hip to be square and intimate love was the best drug and the heart of Rock N Roll was still beatin... in Cleveland. He was down to earth, not full of himself and yet brilliant.

For the longest time I was trying to figure out what your generation means when they use the word UNDERRATED because it does NOT mean what you think it does. A little lesson. Here is what UNDERRATED means. "not rated or valued highly enough" This band had a soundtrack with 2 of the 3 Movies in BACK TO THE FUTURE. They had 12 songs that reached the top 10 and they had 3 THREE NUMBER ONE HITS. They were given every ungodly contract for marketing merchandise during that time. THEY ARE NOT UNDERRATED. THEN IT HIT ME LIKE A ROCK. You and YOUR generation thinks it means "forgotten" it does not. Thay have NEVER been UNDERRATED.

I saw Huey and his band at a winery in Northern California in 00's and could kick myself for not listening to them much longer in my life. Absolute fantastic showmanship, musicianship and all around great vibes. Greatly underrated and now all we have is recordings left to listen too. Life has cruel ironies but life always blooms wonderful people and efforts. And that is a result my having not valued his music because he was tainted by his marketing as a lightweight fizzy pop nightclub derivative. He weren't no Steely Dan to put it. I've worked stage with Early Eagles to Peak Liberace to Terminal Elvis and I'm a hard judge on acts. What Huey and his guys bring to the art is not just fantastically crafted accessible comfortable songs for fun and art. If you want underrated performance, Liberace. Anybody with the ability to captivate an entire class and caliber of people to follow them throughout their careers have very much what musical snobs do not have. Charm.

I think you're right. I'm surprised at their musicianship when I watch many of these clips. Actually, any artist can be "underrated" in retrospect as well. Underrated doesn't just mean while they're producing: it's an evaluative term that is also applied in retrospect. The band is not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. When people talk about the "great" rock bands, you rarely if ever hear their name mentioned. Hayes and Colla are excellent musicians--who ever brings them up? So, I don't see any problem with calling them "underrated." It's not about success: it's about evaluation.

I learned a lot from this interview reading between the lines. Huey is super humble. He was an academic "prodigy" like Dave said but Huey downplayed it. Sounds like he got a full ride to an elite prep school. Scored high enough on the SAT at 15 to start Cornell at 16 but went on his own to Europe. His favorite country was Yugoslavia, which is an unusual choice showing some depth. On top of that, it was a Communist country at the time. So, somehow, at 15 or 16, he got into a country that required a very difficult-to-obtain visa. So now I'm thinking he was so brilliant that somehow his trip was grant funded, perhaps by the State Department or some organization. Then, he says he was an "average" pitcher in high school when Dave asked him about being a good baseball player. Now, I know he's being humble and he probably excelled. So, basically, Huey Lewis was a creative and academic genius and an incredible athlete and music superstar. In other words, he was a renaissance man and all-around stud.

I was into metal and punk as a kid, and didn’t pay much attention to bands like this when they were on steady rotation on MTV, but now that I’ve aged (a bit), looking back, man! These guys were great! Such a talented and fun band!

Funny that you said that because I also was into metal and punk back then when MTV came out. I like Huey and the band, but they seemed to me to be the type of music of my dad's era such as the "American Graffiti" movie days. I was quite surprised at how popular they became because the music was different, but they great musicians and Huey is a great song writer.

I was fortunate enough to meet Huey, Sean, Johnny, and Bill, along with Stef Burns, their current guitar player, and Rob Sudduth! Went to a business conference at Disney World in the mid-90s at the Swan Hotel. They hired Huey Lewis and the News as the entertainment for the first night of the conference, got to see him up close at the stage with about 100 -200 people in attendence outside near the pool, many of whom didn't know a single song. I kept yelling for "A Couple Days Off" after every few songs, I think that was the last album (Hard at Play) they had released before this concert. So they come out for the encore and Huey's saying what great new ballad they had to play and I'm yelling "A Couple Days Off" like an idiot, he takes the mic and puts it in front of my face and asks what song do you want to hear next, so of course I say "A Couple Days Off" and he says "So you wanna rock!" and the small crowd starts cheering - he cranks out the tune, had a few people from the audience up on stage singing "COUPLE DAYS OFF" at the appropriate time in the song .... great time!

Im 35 and i'm just discovering Huey Lewis and the News, I guess i was born just a tiny bit too late and i missed them while growing up in the 90s. It's amazing to me that such a famous, great and fun rock band somehow could have kept such a relatively low profile in the 90's and forward. I don't really know what happened there but i'm glad i'm discovering them now!

I was lucky to be just starting to buy music (on vinyl or cassette!) at age 10 when Fore! came out. Back to the Future was the big movie event of the year (also featuring their music, of course). And Back to the Future would have been a nostalgia hit for my parents' generation growing up in the 1950s. I'm glad great music is spanning the generations. :) Huey and co. seem to be really modest about their abilities, but really they are excellent musicians.

In '87, Huey released this; Fore!, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip To Be Square". A song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity and the importance of trends. It's also a personal statement about the band itself. Hey, Paul!
