@@Kandik93 Cheryl Ladd would clash with all the other angel actresses, except congenial Jaclyn Smith but only befriended her so as not to be found out. Kate Jackson already had worked with the diminutive blonde, and had seen her tactics at work. Ladd maintained a dalliance with one of the producers from the get-go, and joined forces with him to get Shelley Hack to leave the series, which she did. When Tanya Roberts was hired, Ladd regretted that move as Julie Rogers overtook Kris Munroe in looks, stature, bikini top size and screen-time.

In fairness to Kate while I do think from everything I've read that she and Cheryl weren't exactly friends, Kate's problems with CA extended far and beyond Cheryl Ladd. I think she was more agitated than the other three (including Farrah of course) that the show was being seen as nothing more than "jiggle TV" - I think she wanted to be taken seriously as an actress and CA didn't allow her that type of outlet. So when she lost out on Kramer vs. Kramer because of it - that was the last straw.

The ratings actually dropped in Season 2...with 24.2 million viewers, but rose a notch to #4 in the yearly ratings. However, the ratings in Season 1 had higher ratings at 25.8 million placing #5 that year. Season 3 had 24.8 million viewers too, but fell to #12 and Season 4 ratings were not horrible at 22.3 million viewers ranking #17 for that year. It was Season 5 that took the tumble unfortunately 😔📺 🔥.

Now that we know that Kate did not like Cheryl and wanted to go with only 2 angels after Farrah left, it makes total sense the way in her individual interview you see her looking around and being evasive in her answer about having a new angel and in this opening when she doesn't remain on stage. I think that producers of CA and Kate herself was afraid the audience would not see the new chemistry. I have to say Kate and Cheryl did a great job of acting well together and the public perception from 1977-79.

Kate was 100% accurate about the scripts becoming ..."crap, crap, crap." Season One, with Farrah, had the best scripts. Not ONE episode that first year $uck'd. *KRIS MUNROE was my favorite Angel, but ... ...the scripts after SEASON 1 began to $uck, $uck, $uck. I admired each of the 6 actresses, during the series' run; also, David Doyle, and the voice of JOHN FORSYTHE.

I love how Kate maneuvered it so that she was gone before Cheryl came on. I think I finally found out why Kate did not like Cheryl. First of all, Kate is a liberal I found out and Cheryl is a conservative. Also, Kate did not appreciate the way Cheryl bossed people around the set. Apparently Farrah was not like that.

Exactly!! The situation behind the scenes was different. Kate knew Cheryl from Satan's School for Girls and had seen what she was like. Kate was a rising star and Cheryl wanted to be one and did everything it takes to get there.... Kate wouldn't forget what she had seen there and she knew things wouldn't be great on the Charlie's Angels set with someone like Cheryl.

Thanks for posting this, Richard! Farrah was not like that. Neither was Kate. This is interesting. Someone who has family in Brantford, Ontario posted this on social media: "Brantwood, Ontario is Wayne Gretzky's hometown. Wayne was very good to Brantford-bringing all kinds of celebrities to his golf tournaments. Anyway one year Farrah Fawcett was one of the guests and was apparently as nice as you'd expect. They practically had to drag her from the crowds wanting her autograph up to the head table so she could get something to eat. A few years later, Cheryl Ladd was there. Apparently, a VERY different personality. She couldn't wait to get to the head table and even yelled at some little girl wanting her autography while Miss Cheryl was eating. Brantford adored Farrah....Cheryl-not so much :( "

Cheryl was having an affair with Charlie's Angels producer / writer Ed Lasko. Cheryl (whom I do love) was for Cheryl. Kate knew what Cheryl was all about, and Kate was not having it. Kate did the best she could in the working environment, but I am sure many days Kate was just not in the mood for Cheryl. Remember they worked extremely long hours, you are around your co workers a lot. Kate seen and knew a lot. And one does not have an affair with the producer of the show in which they work on. Cheryl admitted herself that her ego was out of control. Kate knew Cheryl and of Cheryl long before Charlie's Angels. Hollywood back in the 1970s was not that big of a place. EVERYONE knew your business.

Everyone who knows that episode "Pretty Angels all in a Row" knows the scene where Kate is tied up eating that sandwich (see her interview with Mike where she came right out of that scene) and she is wearing that red blouse. The way Kate wanted to excuse herself when Cheryl came in, draws conclusion that they didn't want to be around each other. No other person who commented talked about these two working together before Charlies Angles. They did. In fact, they work on a film called the Santan's School for Girls and on Rookies. This could mean, something went on during THOSE times and Kate because she was close to Farrah to see her go and Cheryl to come in, possibly reunited a flare. People always assume Kate didnt like Cheryl on this show but in Hollywood, you are bound to meet the other one way or another whether good or bad. They to me had bad blood BEFORE this show. Still watching, still fascinated, still a mystery but they are ALL true Angels. These Angels from today can never replace the Angels from the past.

It is funny how Cheryl said she had worked for Arron Spelling before on The Rookies and a Movie of the Week. What she didn’t want to mention was that Kate was in both of these, too. Obviously, Kate left early so not to be in the same room as Cheryl. She sits there the whole time with Jaclyn but all of the sudden needs to leave just before Cheryl comes in for her interview. I know it’s silly to comment on some interview from over 40 years ago but like I said earlier this interview was done in real time and right from the beginning Kate Jackson had problems with Cheryl Ladd joining the cast. The only thing I don’t know is if Kate would have been happy with anyone replacing Farrah. I guess we’ll never know.

​@@Kandik93 No, Jackson became a nightmare on the set and was eventually fired (although they tried to backtrack on their very blunt statement to the effect that she had been let go for the good of the show, and Jackson claimed she had left). Ladd was a team player and was loathe to bite the hand that fed her. Ladd never blamed Jackson. Show me evidence of Ladd ever bad-mouthing anyone. Jackson and her new husband (the lapdog Andrew Stevens) maintained a near troppo campaign of near vitriolic proportions in the media against the show and just about everyone involved with it. Stevens is on verifiable record as saying that his wife had problems with both Jaclyn Smith and Ladd.

Cheryl and Ed Lakso should have married each other. He was "handsome" so Cheryl was naturally attracted to him ehem.... as she knew Ed would be able to help her become a star. So she did whatever it takes! She never became a great actress but she was willing to don teeny tiny outfits. And it worked - to some extent. Gradually the show had more stories focused on Cheryl and she was an insufferable nightmare - behind the scenes mind you. But when you have alliances with Ed, Aaron and Leonard oh and Nolan you can't go wrong. Badmouthing some co-worker did wonders, too. Oh but that can't be!!! Not Cheryl! She's a sweet heart!!....Right!? I mean, she did not manipulate behind the scenes...!.... Or did she!

Actually, from what I understand, Farrah was pressured by her then husband Lee Majors to leave the show. He really wanted a stay home wife. However, that didn't work out so well. I don't know if that is true or not, Lee seems like a nice guy.

I LOVE Charlie's Angels and I have seen interviews and read that the original 3 were very close, Jaclyn Smith and Cheryl Ladd eventually became close too but Kate Jackson never warmed up to Cheryl. I love all of them, and I wish Kate Jackson would have become as close to Cheryl as Jaclyn did. There was no reason not to like Cheryl Ladd. It was not her fault that Farrah left and she did a great job of replacing her. After Kate left is when the ratings dropped.

Kate loved season 1. Like summer camp. When Cheryl came on both jaclyn and Kate were a little apprehensive, but Jaclyn warmed up. Kate never did. I think she really hated Farrah not being on the show. Also with Cheryl, T&A was highest with Chris in a bikini every shot. That's not what Kate signed on for as the series to be. It just evolved. Kate left and shw suffered. Kate wanted quality scripts. ABC suits wanted T&A. Kate wasn't a T&A person, she was more elegant dresser.

Behind the scenes, Kate never really fully accepted Cheryl Ladd, or took to her, as Jaclyn did. She could be quite cold towards her, and Cheryl has said she found her to be very intimidating. She also said working with her was a daily challenge. They were never friends behind the scenes, and in Cheryl's words, it was all about getting the work done.

I can see that and that's too bad as I have read Cheryl said some days Kate would talk to her and some she wouldn't but at the same time Cheryl wasn't gonna play up and be 'girlfriends' with the 2 knowing that Jaclyn was divorced and Kate was single (till Season 3) cause Cheryl had her husband and daughter to go home to...till Season 4. In the early 80s Kate said something like ” Cheryl got me in a few ways” meaning Cheryl did some sneaky things to Kate, so it’s not all Kate being against Cheryl for no reasons. Cheryl was also known for being a diva on the Charlie's Angels set. Plus Ladd was a very conservative Republican (I would guess she still is), Jackson a liberal Democrat (I definitely know she still is). And Cheryl's work ethics or the lack thereof, were something that bothered Kate at the time and also when she and Cheryl did a film "Satan's School for Girls" in 1973. Jackson had the lead and was a pro already. Ladd was an extra but made sure her career was going to gain momentum...

In Season 4, Cheryl eventually turned on lovely Shelley Hack too. Cheryl Ladd would have lunch a lot with Jaclyn Smith and Ed Lasko and newcomer Shelley Hack was never invited reported inside staff workers. There is another side of Cheryl Ladd that isn't always contributed or displayed. Kate probably noticed that too and kept her distance. Even Farrah never befriended Cheryl and was in agreement with Kate and ABC to not have Cheryl in the reunion in 2006. There is a juicy story in there and a great made for tv movie should be in the making of it all 📺🧡🖤💙🔥.

@@Kandik93 Very true! Ladd was known to be a piece of work on the set. She did not get along with any of her female co-stars, except for Jaclyn Smith. She did befriend Smith mainly out of fear of being branded a problem worker. Ladd created a very toxic work environment behind the scenes, also thanks to her dalliance with Ed Lakso. Crew members would later reveal personality clashes between Ladd and the rest of the CA actresses and across many Hollywood productions, even before this show. In a repeat pattern throughout her career, Ladd formed dalliances with producers. Having previously worked with her and well aware of how Ladd operated, Kate Jackson strongly disliked her. She was on to Ladd. Later, Ladd's behind-the-scenes hostile behavior would be the catalyst for Shelley Hack's departure from the series. To Ladd's dismay, a much more buxom actress was hired as the 6th--and final-angel. Cheryl is also on record saying she never warmed up to Farrah Fawcett, citing not knowing her due to her few appearances. Farrah never warmed up to Cheryl either and that is certainly no surprise.

Why did Kate become godmother to Jaclyn’s daughter and Jaclyn became godmother to Kate’s adopted son? Why are they still friends to this day? Cheryl doesn’t come across as real and genuine and certainly not a warm person. This interview is a great example. Whereas in her own interview Kate comes across as warm, fun and down-to-earth. Kate wanted to improve the show and wanted better scripts. The men in charge couldn’t handle a strong woman. Hence they badmouthed her as we see in some documentaries (there are decent documentaries, too) and on social media people post the same old lies they heard "somewhere". Well, some people kiss butt while others stand up for what is right!

Usually, you hear about these feuds much later on but this is even before Season 2 aired. Kate’s being all evasive & Cheryl is being careful with her words. Jaclyn was gracious enough to sit with Cheryl & defend her. It’s a fascinating interview in real time. Either Kate didn’t like Cheryl in general or she didn’t want anyone replacing Farrah.

In the early 80s Kate said something like ” Cheryl got me in a few ways” meaning Cheryl did some sneaky things to Kate, so it’s not all Kate being against Cheryl for no reasons. Cheryl was also known for being a diva on the Charlie's Angels set. And her work ethics or the lack thereof, were something that bothered Kate at the time and also when she and Cheryl did a film "Satan's School for Girls" in 1973. Jackson had the lead and was a pro already. Ladd was an extra but made sure her career was going to gain momentum...

She demanded her rights and fought for quality scripts. And paid the price for it. The 70s men didn't like that. They wanted for women to keep quiet and wear skimpy outfits instead. I always seemed if it goes back as far as Satan's School for Girls since Kate knew Cheryl, before the other 2, and years later, but I have a friend who told me (over 15 years ago which I can see) that of course Kate was reserved of Cheryl, cause Kate probably thought this hit series she's in with Farrah, at the time, could be cancelled and never got past that. I myself was a Kris fan, but later on with Kramer vs. Kramer, which Dustin Hoffman handpicked Kate, and Aaron was smart about that. He knew Kate was his # 1 star, of the show and didn't want her doing it during CA time and threatened the execs, he would see that this picture would never come out if you have Kate, and knowing this would be year after year that his # 1 star, would take time to make feature films

She kept asking for better scripts but they wouldn't listen. And I think Kate not liking Cheryl is multi-faceted and also going back to Satan's School for Girls among other reasons. Pretty rude, Banana. Cheryl did a good job but she didn't save the show. That's nonsense. Cheryl got by because Kate was still on the show. The ratings dropped when Kate left. Cheryl should be thankful because without Kate this show would not exist. Cheryl did complain about Kate more than once. Not very classy, Ms. Ladd. A person who had worked on the Charlie's Angels set says Kate was very nice to people, including the people working on the set who weren't "stars". People liked her. She was more down to earth in many ways. Farrah was very sweet, and she had a great sense of humor in the sense that she'd laugh at everyone's jokes. The guy says that set was a madhouse. It drove him crazy. Hair and make-up (people) were always flying around between takes, and it drove Kate crazy. Jaclyn wasn't too thrilled about it either. Farrah didn't seem to mind. Then Farrah left and Cheryl came along. She was sort of a diva and ordered people around. For example she ordered someone to get her a soft drink once, and the poor girl brought her the wrong one. Here is some info to help you understand. Everyone who knows that episode "Pretty Angels all in a Row" knows the scene where Kate is tied up eating that sandwich (see her interview with Mike where she comes right out of that scene) and she is wearing that red blouse. And knowing how tight their daily schedule was and their lunch time was only 45 minutes it is no surprise Kate had to go back. Kate and Jaclyn (and Farrah) had that exceptional chemistry. You can see it in Jaclyn's interview. But not everyone can be best friends with their co-workers. It's perfectly okay. So Kate and Cheryl were never close (in Kate's words). Cheryl did a good job replacing Farrah. That wasn't easy. But it was Kate who was the glue that held CA together. Because she was the co-creator of the show (the name and concept were her ideas). Kate was also the best actress and it showed. And after Kate left the show never recovered from her departure.

You are right PST19, Jaclyn NEVER said that Kate was a bully. She said in a documentary that there was friction between Cheryl and Kate which is true (and Kate had her reasons for disliking diva Cheryl). It was writer Ed Lakso who said in the same documentary that Kate tended to be bully. He said that because he couldn't cope with an assertive woman like Kate who wanted better scripts (she was right!). He favored Cheryl above the rest of the Charlie's Angels cast, and made her the center of attention by writing episodes revolving around Kris Munroe. And here's why: Lakso maintained a covert dalliance with Ladd for most of the duration of CA!
