Ritchie Blackmore is the greatest rock guitarist ever. Over 60 years he has not repeated himself one bit. True Creative Genius. The Keyboardist was Jon Lord. He was Classically Trained. He was a super Classical Pianist. He perfected Rhythm Organ push his Hammond through Marshall Amps.

The main singer is David Coverdale, who went on to front a band called Whitesnake. The guy in the white jacket who hit that high note is Glenn Hughes, who sang for Black Sabbath on the album Seventh Star. He was also in the bands Trapeze, Black Country Communion and Dead Daisies. Deep Purple's previous singer, Ian Gillan, was also in Black Sabbath on the Born Again album. Ian Gillan is currently back in Deep Purple.

There were around 400,000 people in that crowd. Deep Purple were massive in 1974 and that year outsold everyone from Led Zeppelin to Elvis. Two of the support acts on the bill were Black Sabbath and The Eagles, which gives you a perspective on how big Deep Purple were back then.

The guitar solo on the studio version of Burn is spectacular, as is the entire song. Also “Highway Star” and “Strange Kind of Woman” from the Made in Japan album are unbelievable.

Quite a muddy mix but that was down to the TV company who were filming and transmitting the show, there was a lot of ill feeling going on backstage between the promotors and band, the live album Made In Europe opens with an excellent version of Burn.

The story behind this concert is hilarious. Purple were promised to go on stage at dusk but were asked to go earlier. Ritchie refused, locked himself in his trailer and got absolutely loaded until it got dark. Later that concert he destroyed a camera worth 10s of thousands with his guitar, set his guitar on fire, explode an amp and throw it into the audience only to escape in a helicopter together with the rest of the band...rock n' roll!

Great reaction ladies! This was from California Jam '74 (I remember watching this on TV) and the Mark III version of Deep Purple. A very young David Coverdale on lead vocals, Glenn Hughes on Vocals/bass (he was the guy with the high pitch and can still hit it to this day), Ritchie Blackmore on guitar, Jon Lord on the Hammond Organ, and Ian Paice on drums.

Not the original line-up for Deep Purple, but that huge Festival crowd still saw a great show... And I'm sure they liked it!!! Glen Hughes with the 'swanky' outfit was playing Bass, and singing those high notes that Donna loves so much. David Coverdale who was singing lead vocals went on to front the band Whitesnake, and he also did an album with Jimmy Page, guitarist from Led Zeppelin.

Then again the MkII version that everybody calls the original lineup wasn't the original. Deep Purple started out with Blackmore, Paice, Lord, Nick Simper on bass and Rod Evans on vocals. The so called MkI lineup. On this video it's the MKIII lineup. Later changed into the fourth version with Tommy Bolin on guitar.

It is amazing Glenn still has it vocally. I watched a video last year of Glenn"s Band in Los Angeles I believe. During the song the band completely stopped playing Stormbringer. The Drummer came out and joined the members on stage. They just let the crowd sing the song. Then the Band Applauded the crowd. I wish I could have been there. 53 years later since the release and thousands singing Stormbringer. Awesome!!

@@KathyLuluandDonna Yes You can see a 90 second video of it on KZbin. Go ahead and check it out just for your self....The Flying Piano - Keith Emerson 1974 Cal Jam.... Full disclosure... Pianos work on gravity and it was gutted. It would have made quite a racket with the hammers pounding all over the strings.. So he wasn't really playing it . Keith decided if guitar players could do stunts and break their guitars he should be able to do something which is why I sent you this version of ...Emerson Lake and Palmer - Fanfare For The Common Man (Finale Live Royal Albert Hall 1992)... I like it much better than the one you did and it ends with Finale. You will see why he needed a repair guy in his road crew.

This was the 'Mark III' line-up of Deep Purple (1974 - '75) which was the peak of their career in the 70's... If interested, u can watch the Deep Purple DVD 'Phoenix rising' for the story of that era of the band. The saga of Deep Purple was turbulent as u know... By 1973, the Mark II line-up was peaking commercially w/ Ian Gillan (vocals), Roger Glover (bass), Ritchie Blackmore (guitar), Jon Lord (keyboards) and Ian Paice (drums)... but internally, singer Ian Gillan and guitarist Ritchie Blackmore were at odds and bickering. Finally, Ian Gillan handed in his resignation from frustration... and Ritchie Blackmore was also talking about leaving and forming a new band. Their managers asked Blackmore what his demands were to get him to stay in Deep Purple and the guitarist demanded that bassist Roger Glover be fired... When Roger Glover was told, he was upset and told them he was quitting on his own. In 1974, Deep Purple needed a new singer and bassist... They hired Trapeze bassist Glenn Hughes, who could also sing lead... Their search for a singer led to the young David Coverdale, a complete unknown vocalist... The chemistry in the studio was good w/ the new members and the album 'Burn' was released... It became their biggest record to date (#3 in the UK, #9 in the US) and another platinum hit. Deep Purple played California Jam '74 festival as headliners and it was an explosive show, recorded and filmed as seen here... There was drama as usual - the concert organizers wanted Deep Purple to go on early, but Ritchie Blackmore refused (He wanted to go on at sunset when the band's lights would be effective) and locked himself away backstage... By the time he got onstage, he was fired up and ended wrecking his guitars and setting an amp on fire, as well as damaging a TV camera filming the band onstage. That show made headlines and Deep Purple were hailed afterwards... 🔥🔥🤘🤘 However, despite Blackmore insisting that bassist Roger Glover be fired from Deep Purple, he later said that he didn't like new bassist Glenn Hughes style of playing bass (his style was funkier) ... When it came time to record the next album 'Stormbringer' in 1974, Blackmore refused to contribute new music and it was written primarily by David Coverdale, Jon Lord and Glenn Hughes... It was another huge hit, but as Deep Purple toured into 1975, Ritchie Blackmore abruptly announced that he was leaving the band. In 1975, Ritchie Blackmore recorded and released the album "Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow" w/ Elf singer Ronnie James Dio... and announced the launch of his new band Rainbow... Oddly, he hired bassist Roger Glover in Rainbow by 1979. Meanwhile, Deep Purple were reeling from Ritchie Blackmore's exit... it was as if guitarist Jimmy Page had left Led Zeppelin. But the band decided to attempt to replace him... Former James Gang guitarist Tommy Bolin was hired and Deep Purple's 'Mark IV' line-up recorded their only album 'Come taste the band' in 1975... and began touring again. But the album undersold (selling gold in the US) and fans were not interested in a Deep Purple without guitarist Ritchie Blackmore. On the 1975/ '76 tour, both bassist Glenn Hughes and guitarist Tommy Bolin were abusing hard drugs and it affected their performances... The tour was also marked by mishaps and tragedy... By the end of the tour in 1976, both Jon Lord and Ian Paice decided to quit, and then David Coverdale told them that he was leaving the band... Lord reportedly told Coverdale, "David, there's no band for you to leave." Deep Purple broke up in 1976... David Coverdale went solo in 1977 and formed his band Whitesnake by 1978 and became more successful than Deep Purple a decade later... both Jon Lord and Ian Paice played in Whitesnake. Ritchie Blackmore's band Rainbow started touring in 1976 and released 3 albums w/ singer Ronnie James Dio before he was fired in 1979... Rainbow went in a more pop-friendly direction in '79, first w/ singer Graham Bonnet... then, with singer Joe Lynn Turner in 1981. Deep Purple Mark II finally reunited in 1984 after their separation in 1973.

Glenn Hughes still looks exactly the same. And sings the same. At the age of 73. He's still making records and touring like crazy, as a solo artist and with the super group Black Country Communion, who just released their fifth album. He's without a doubt the only singer to be considered for both Judas Priest and Earth Wind & Fire. While recording the song "You can't do it right" with Deep Purple in 1974, Glenn's hero Stevie Wonder paid them a visit in the studio, and having heard Glenn's vocals jokingly said: "Are you sure you are a white boy?" And, which sometimes gets overlooked because of his voice, Glenn is also a great bassist. Not in Deep Purple anymore, though: his predecessor Roger Glover holds that position again.

Oh yeah, another fun fact (I know, I'm just too full of them): when Deep Purple broke up in 1976 (to be reunited in their classic Mark 2 lineup in 1984), relations had already soured between Glenn and keyboard player Jon Lord - after Glenn found his girlfriend Vickie in bed with Jon, following which she left Glenn for Jon. Glenn and Jon did however reconcile - Jon was adored by everyone who knew him - and Jon and Vickie later married, had a daughter and remained a very happy couple until Jon sadly succumbed to pancreatic cancer in 2012.

The guy in the white jacket spent most of the next 20 years doing drugs and alcohol instead of music. Which probably helped that his voice is in a good shape now after not really using it 20 years.

Deep Purple | Burn !!! GREAT Please ... When you get to ... "Smoke On Water".... DO NOT DO the studio version . It is dull and lackluster. Get it from the ... Made In Japan ... album it is Live and sounds alive. I am always looking for my cousins in the Jam videos. When I freeze frame it gets blurry. They were up front and towards the end they had a bon fire that you can see between ELP's Greg Lake's solos of.... Still... You Turn Me On and Lucky Man... . Can't make them out in that one with only their silhouettes.

Unfortunately Glen Hughes on bass took his life shortly afterwards the rest of guys are still going 55 years later , this is a different line up not the original which was the best, try their early stuff, deep purple in rock , fireball.....at one point they were the loudest band in the world 116 decibels which is unheard of ...

@@balticstain7150 Yep Tommy Bolin died in 1976 but he didn't take his own life either, it was an accidental drug overdose as far as I know.

Yes but with 11year old YOYOKA playing the drum part. You'll see just how well crafted that is. Ian Paice of course and he is seriously impressed with her cover.

Huh?? The Original version, from the album BURN is sung by Coverdale & Hughes, and, if memory serves, was written by Blackmore & Coverdale. I don't see how Gillan figures into that. Though he may have sung the song in the current DP lineup. Cheers!

The original singer of this was Ian Gillian. Nothing against David, but he is no Ian.
