This song is what started all the techno and electronic music that is STILL sampled today! It's a great song! She broke a lot of barriers in her day. She did all the vocals on this song too. The "back up" singers are her but of course, in concert, she needed them to back her. In 2011, the Library of Congress added the song to the National Recording Registry as "culturally, historically, or aesthetically important".

Yes this is a great track and was certainly part of the change in direction of popular music. However it did not “start” electronic music: Kraftwerk released Trans-Europe express in 1974, and by the time this track was released they had already moved on to their second album. Furthermore electronic music in popular culture dates back further: silver apples an electronic act released material in the 60s, as for sampling this is something that the Beatles were doing in the 1960s. This is a song I like, but I’m just saying if you are going to post “facts” you should consider doing some basic homework first, and that way you don’t come across looking like an idiot

You really need to review Donna's "McArthur Park" 1978 VH1 Live for a true representation of her vocals. Also, the song you reviewed here was the studio version with clips of her doing this live. There are no backup singers in this song. All 3 backup vocals you heard were all Donna Summer.

Absolute brilliance ... the synths and the sounds are Giorgio Moroder indeed ... the composition and arrangement is by an Icelandic composer/engineer Thor Baldurson - he's in the guy in the video doing all the synths and keyboard stuff - they all came together and did one hell of a track indeed - would have loved to have been in the studio hehe!

The word here is perspective. When this came out there was nothing like it. It was the shock of the new. This is almost a restatement of her first big hit "Love to Love You, Baby" with the same producer (Giorgio Moroder) which IMO is a better song but didn't have the robotic dance beat. But it did have sensuality or even sexuality to the max.

I LOVE Donna Summer, and I love this song! That being said, very often you will find that artists that existed BEFORE the music video industry, ended up with music videos that had the studio version as a soundtrack, and a video of them doing a live performance, and BOTH are out of sync. I don’t know if the artists had any say in the matter, (and I’m leaning towards them not) or the record labels did these on their own. (Which seems more plausible to me) I HATE these types of videos. Either make one live, or make a video for the song. In many cases, the videos ere made after the artists careers had run their course.

this was the recorded version, the live footage had actual live vocals but were replaced with recorded version for this video. so the guy playing the keyboard was playing live which isnt exactly like the record. it also wasn't as long as the recorded version. the background vocals harmonized well cause i believe all vocals were donna summer's

It's not live. This was the recorded track with video and film of her performing on TV and LIVE. At the time,, the sound effects could not be copied nearly as well live, but they did it as best as they could. Now it would all be preprogrammed ahead of time, although, she always had her band play it live. and at the time it was recorded, her producer, Giorgio Moroder was a pioneer with the synthesizer, and this was the first "Techno" song that started that trend.
