She was my first musical idol. I still shed a tear on the anniversary of her passing. Trully a genius vocalist. You know, if im not mistaken, just like Barbra Streisand, Donna saw herself as an actress who sang. She had so many different characters in her voice that she used expertlly.

I love your reaction to this. Your giving queen her rightful dues. Anyone who ever saw her live in concert knows just how powerful and versatile her voice was. Even better than Barbra Streisand! And it got better and better the older she was even when she was dying. Beyond words!

great version with alot of different vocal runs, phrasing, that little added spoken word moment, and an overall great performance. Donna Summer rules that stage with commanding power. the original version still is more captivating with the band backing her up with even more enthusiasm enhanced with vibrant orchestral strings and a closing high note that Donna Summer kills that is replaced here by a light low volume falsetto. the original version is so good that it won the song an Academy Award. as always Empress, your insight, enthusiasm, and charm always make it a delight to experience.

I mentioned before that I saw Donna Summer in concert and she sounds even better live then on her studio recorded albums. She is SOOOOOOO talented. She is a powerhouse! She’s right up there with Whitney Houston, but never got the same level of well deserved respect. Thanks for a great reaction Empress! ✌🏻🙂✌🏻

Houston isn't up there Summer ! That's the reality...Houston in concert was boring, didn't really engage the audience, she was not the concert performer the gals from the generations before her were. eg. Turner, Summer, Ronstadt, etc. Houston a fine vocalist and one of the best of her generation. But I certainly would not put her in same sentence with many, that came before her. Houston's legacy has been greatly enforced by our social media culture and the fanatical hyperbole and misinformation of wikipedia. Which has been used endlessly in todays online media as a reference.

I agree, Ocean Lover. However, since Donna was big in the 70's and most music listeners probably only seem to associate Disco with her, as if she was yesterday's music news, they fail to listen to her music catalogue, outside of her hits, which were mainly Dance songs. Whitney was the kind of star who was upfront and in the news on tv shows and she had hits too. Donna was quite the opposite in regards to the public spotlight: Not in the news hardly at all and you rarely heard or saw her. As such, a lot of people never heard of her or knew her. But, vocally, Donna was up there with Whitney, she (Donna) just didn't incorporate all the vocal runs and vocal tricks that live audiences seem to scream and yell when they hear them. You know: The vocal runs and things a lot of black singers do? Donna could do that and has done it a few times live, but in studio recordings, Donna was more like an actress approaching song lyrics like a script, so she'd sing songs in character (ie. "Dinner With Gershwin", "Love To Love You Baby", "Sometimes Like Butterflies", etc.). If she (Donna) had sung every song in the same voice, like Whitney and other female singers did/do, incorporating the same vocal runs and styles, each character in Donna's songs would be the same and that was not how she approached songs. She wanted each character to be different in some way and you can hear it in a lot of her songs. A lot of music lovers like vocal runs and the showcasing of vocal abilities along the lines of things like that, so I think Donna was less appreciated due to lack of showcasing that. Not to mention, she was dubbed the Queen Of Disco and a lot of people didn't like Disco. Which is ironic today, since Disco is still being played on the radio today, only it's not called Disco. It's called Dance music with its various dance subgenres, like Dub Step, House, Club, etc. Dance music is dance music. Disco was Dance music. They just called it Disco back then. Donna was very versatile, musically, having won Grammys for R&B, Dance, Inspirational, and Rock. She was more than Disco. Only hard core fans seem to realize that as well as those in the music industry. Casual music listeners only seem to know her hits, so they are missing out, but I feature Donna songs on my channel weekly, because she is my favorite singer ever. Yes, better than Whitney in my book. (smile). Donna sang songs Whitney would have turned down because they weren't Whitney's style. Donna has been quoted as having said she sung songs others would turn down and she made them her style.

@@JimmieJamOfTheDay Thank join for your insight. I agree with what you said. There are two live recordings that I listen to with any regularity. One is Judy Garland Live at Carnegie Hall. The other is Miss Donna Summer, this concert. Girl. I was, and am still awe struck by the vocals inside this woman. As I said, I only listen to two live recordings. And, the reason is that I feel like I could be there watching and listening to this in person. Just close my eyes, and there I am. Doing the Saturday Night Live dance. Girl. And, that ending. She touched my soul.

Donna summer was a rare creature, in that though she was a technical singer with expert control over her instrument, she was also one capable of delivering emotion too. Donna Summer knew how to manipulate her voice to bring the meaning of her lyrics to life. Her skill as vocalist to hold notes effortlessly was ridiculous. She also had a vibrato that could be manipulated in speed depending on the effect required. Most incredible was Donna was still singing these same notes with clarity until she died.

Donna Summer rocketed to international super-stardom in the mid-1970s when her groundbreaking merger of R&B, soul, pop, funk, rock, disco and avant-garde electronica catapulted underground dance music out of the clubs of Europe to the pinnacles of sales and radio charts around the world. Maintaining an unbroken string of hits throughout the 70s and 80s, most of which she wrote, Donna holds the record for most consecutive double albums to hit #1 on the Billboard charts (3) and first female to have four #1 singles in a 12 month period; 3 as a solo artist and one as a duo with Barbra Streisand. A five-time Grammy winner, Donna Summer was the first artist to win the Grammy for Best Rock Vocal Performance, Female (1979, "Hot Stuff") as well as the first-ever recipient of the Grammy for Best Dance Recording (1997, "Carry On"). In 2004, she became one of the first inductees, as both an Artist Inductee and a Record Inductee (for 1977's "I Feel Love") into the Dance Music Hall of Fame in New York City. Born Donna Gaines on New Year's Eve to a large family in Boston, she developed an early interest in music. From the age of eight, Summer sang in church choirs and city-wide choruses, and by her early twenties, was performing in musical theatre in Germany, winning parts in such highly-acclaimed shows as "Hair," "Showboat," "Godspell," and "Porgy and Bess" as well as performing with the Viennese Folk Opera. She released her first single, a cover of the Jaynett's girl group classic, "Sally Go Round The Roses," in 1971. While singing backup, she met producers Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte who produced her first single, "Hostage," which became a hit in the Netherlands, France and Belgium. In 1975, Moroder and Bellotte produced the international hit, "Love to Love You Baby," which rose to #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and triggered Summer's triumphant return to the United States as a key figure of the then-emerging disco genre. "Love To Love You Baby" paved the way for such international hits as "MacArthur Park," "Bad Girls," "Hot Stuff," "Dim All The Lights," "On The Radio," and "Enough Is Enough," as well as the Grammy and Academy award winning theme song "Last Dance," from the film "Thank God It's Friday," which remains a milestone in Donna's career. In 1980, Summer became the first artist to sign with David Geffen's new label, Geffen Records, leaving her disco days behind and moving into the next phase of her career ." In the years that followed, Summer collaborated with writers and producers such as Quincy Jones, Michael Omartian and England's dance-pop production compound Stock Aitken Waterman and produced a steady stream of hits from "State of Independence," featuring Michael Jackson on backing vocals, to the abiding feminist anthem "She Works Hard For The Money," one of the most-played songs of all-time, and the infectious "This Time I Know It's For Real." In 1994, she released "Endless Summer," a greatest hits retrospective containing a new song, "Melody of Love," which became Billboard's #1 Dance Record of the Year. She also released the critically acclaimed gem "Christmas Spirit," a collection of Summer's original songs and holiday standards recorded with the Nashville Symphony Orchestra. Summer spent the '90s continuing to tour, performing to sold-out audiences worldwide. In 1997, when the new "Best Dance Recording" Category was created at the Grammy Awards, Donna Summer was the first winner with her fifth career Grammy award for "Carry On." In 1999, Sony/Epic Records released "VH1 Presents Donna Summer: Live & More - Encore!," an album and DVD of Summer's critically acclaimed VH1 broadcast taped at New York's Hammerstein Ballroom. The show premiered on VH1 as one of the network's highest rated shows to date and featured live performances of Summer's top hits. In addition to her five Grammy Awards, Summer has won six American Music Awards, three consecutive #1 platinum double albums (she's the only solo artist, male or female, ever to accomplish this), 11 gold albums, four #1 singles on Billboard's Hot 100 Chart, 3 platinum singles, and 12 gold singles. Summer is also the first female artist to have a #1 single and #1 album on the Billboard charts simultaneously ("Live & More;" "MacArthur Park" 1978) a feat she also repeated six months later ("Bad Girls" & "Hot Stuff" in 1979). She has charted 33 Top Ten hits on the combined Billboard Disco/Dance/Dance Club/Play charts over a period of 37 years with 18 reaching the #1 spot solidifying her as the undisputed Queen of Dance. In addition to her recording and performing career, Summer is an accomplished visual artist whose work has been shown at exhibitions worldwide including Steven Spielberg's "Starbright Foundation Tour of Japan" and The Whitney Museum as well as a prestigious engagement at Sotheby's in New York. Since 1989, she has sold over 1.7 million dollars in original art - with her highest piece going for $150,000. In 2003, Random House published her autobiography "Ordinary Girl," co-authored with Marc Eliot. Also that year, Universal released "The Journey," containing all of her original hits, as well as two new songs. In 2008, celebrating four decades of milestones, Summer adds another accomplishment to her list with the success of her new album "Crayons." The album debuted at #17 on the Billboard Top 200 Chart making it Summer's highest debuting album ever. It also debuted at #5 on the Billboard R&B chart - another personal best. "Crayons" is Summer's first album of all new studio material in 17 years and is her highest charting album since "She Works Hard For The Money" in 1983. To date, the album has spawned three #1 Dance hits "I'm A Fire," "Stamp Your Feet" and "Fame (The Game)." It is estimated that Summer has sold more than 130 million records worldwide. Ranked #24 on Billboard Magazines 50th Anniversary issue's "Hot 100 Artists of All Time," Donna Summer was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame on April 18, 2013

Janet Jackson cited this song has a inspiration to her when she re-arranged her song ''Together Again'' during the sessions of the ''Velvet Rope'' (since it's was originally a ballad), she wanted to started very slow ''Together Again'' like this song before switching up in a very up-tempo. It's was one of tbe most iconic songs of Donnaa Summer in the 70's and a major influencal for a lot of major artists notably in the 80's and the 90's.

I love to see your funny and natural reactions. You will really enjoy a lot, of the "Last Dance" (1978) original studio version (8:11 mins.). Paul Jabara wrote it in front of the Puerto Rico's beaches and Bob Esty made the spectacular "Last Dance" musical originalf arangments. With the Donna Summer's phenomenal voice and vocalizations, the song was turned as the 70s Disco Era icon. . Please, react for the magical studio version (17:37 mins.) of Donna Summer's (1978) "MacArthur Park Suite" (Macarthur Park/One of A Kind/Heaven Knows). The three songs mix (a real Donna Summer's fantastic Disco trade mark) is one the graetets Masterpieces of all times; produced by Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte. A lot of people araund the World loves the Donna Summer's, beauty, voice, art, style and her humble personality. She is one of a kind. Blessings to everybody! like most people who know destined club classic music when they hear it, i fell in love with this song the 1st time I heard it back in...1978 I think (taken from the soundtrack of the barely known- Thank god it's friday film) I'm not so keen on this... hurried stompy live version, BUT the original studio recording is unbeatable (the one everyone should be listening to) up there with the best - Cool & the gang, earth wind fire, heatwave and others. hear we have Mozart updated brilliantly produced and written by... Surprised with as many Olivia N-J. songs that you've done, no one requested Make a Move on Me? think it was a No. 1 for her. P.S. If anyone ever requests Jamiroquai and you've never heard of them' you should , super underrated acid jazz band from the nineties. Great show, keep rolling like a BigWheel !

Please PAY ATTENTION to HOW FAR, she has to hold her MICROPHONE away from her mouth, when She is FULL ON BELTING!!!!!! Her power is SOOOOO inhuman that She knows that Microphone will not be able to handle it and Her Voice would just blow out that Mic.!! By the way this is not the only instance of her doing this, if you go back to many of her live performances, she does this quite often, so, this is not just a one time thing! Donna Summer‘s voice was Other WORLDL AND WE LOST HER WAYYYYY TO SOON!! Oh I thought you might find this fun and interesting, nine times out of ten her background singers were her sisters!!!!!! NOW THAT IS WHAT I CALL A TALENTED FAMILY AND GOD GIVEN TALENT, FOR ALL OF THEM TO HAVE THAT GIFT!!!!!!

Play "Bad Girls" by Donna Summer, if you haven't already. Prior to Beyonce, Whitney Houston, and Madonna, Donna Summer was the premier female pop icon in America.

You look so different in the intro then you do when you're presenting the content. I'd appreciate at least once seeing you look the way you do your intro, throughout the entire video. Absolutely nothing wrong with how you look in the video normally, just that your look in the intro is such a radically different one I think it would give the video of entirely different feel

It’s too bad she turned on her gay audience, the audience who made her. Her brilliant career fizzled out in the end as the consequence of that. Still one of the greats.
