FINALLY!!! I have been mentioning this song on every Reactor's site for ages. It always gets overlooked for the songs that get played ad nauseum. I think this is one of her finest songs.

This is one of my Top 5 Donna songs. Written by Jon Anderson (Yes) and Vangelis. Don’t know what it is but this song just gets to me. As usual, the 5+ minute album version is better all around. Think it expresses her spirituality probably better than any other song she has done. I can understand on initial listen not thinking it’s very special. I felt the same way the first time I heard it. But I gave it some more listens and it REALLY grew on me. But yea, it’s one of my Donna faves. Hope you come back to it sometime and give it another try.

@@GaiaMiranda I am familiar with the original; unfortunately I am slightly allergic to Jon Anderson's voice, so I much prefer Donna's version.

What a great song! Sting said that this song was in his top ten. To show how much respect Donna had from her peers all these singers sang as the backup choir for this song including Lionel Richie, Dionne Warwick, Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Brenda Russell, Christopher Cross, Dyan Cannon, James Ingram, Kenny Loggins, Debbie McGee, Peggy Lipton, Patti Austin, Michael McDonald, and Stevie Wonder.[

State of life, may I live? May I love? Coming out the sky, I name me a name Coming out-silver word-what it is It is the very nature of the sound the game Siamese, Indionese. To Tibet treat the life As a game, if you please Coming up, Carabi, this sense of freedom Derives from a mediative state Movin' on, 'believe' that's it, call it magic Third world, it is, I only guessed it Shablam idi shablam ida Shablam idi shablam ida Shablam idi shablam ida Shot to the soul-the flame of Oroladin The essence of the word The 'state of independence' Sounds like a signal from you Bring me to meet your sound And I will bring you to my heart Love like a signal you call Touching my body, my soul Bring to me, you to meet me here Home be the temple of your heart Home be the body of your love Just like holy water to my lips Yes I do know how I survive (yes I do know) know why I'm alive To love and be with you Day by day by day by day Say-aye yaya oh (yayah yaya oh) 'be the sound of higher love' today Time, time again, it is said We will hear, we will see See it all-in his wisdom-hear His truth will abound the land This truth will abound the land This state of independence shall be This state of independence shall be Time, time again, it is said We will hear, we will see See it all-in his wisdom-hear His truth will abound the land This truth will abound the land This state of independence shall be This state of independence shall be This state of independence shall be This state of independence shall be This state of independence shall be This state of independence shall be

One of my Fav versions of this song. Not many people know this, put 'Michael Jackson in studio State Of Independence' into you tube search bar, you'll discover a couple of things in a few different videos. Like where the riff in Billie Jean comes from and who sings backing (chants etc).

My top song ever! Original by Vangelis. Thing is it is produced by a classical musician and some find it difficult for their ears to adapt. Intelligent music is difficult on first hearing. I love her music and in particular this song! Musical Youth Michael Jackson Stevie Wonder, Lionel Richie etc big names big song.

I've never really like the song myself. I think Mystery of Love, Love Is In Control (Finger on the trigger) and Woman In Me, the latter 2 being the first two singles released from this album, were far better tracks and for the time as well.

Can definitely understand your reaction to the song. I do like that it’s ’different’ stylistically, although like you said, there is a reggae element to it, even some of the background instrumental phrases that sound similar to to the song Unconditional Love, which she recorded wit( the Jamaican group, Musical Youth. Lots of people probably have no idea that the background singers was a collection of famous solo artists that inspired the idea for the We Are the World project. You can see the session on KZbin. So imagine all that money spent, and this professional musical excellence, and the song comes out to be not to exciting or moving. There’s a certain monotonous quality to the verses, as those sections are pretty long. Anyway, the background vocal session is more interesting to watch than this video. That said I also love Donna Summer & enjoyed her work beyond disco like She Works Hard For the Money & the musical Youth jam. She made her mark with disco & obviously was dubbed the queen, but Do N.A. had a rich powerful voice & was musically skilled. She also had a great warm & vibrant personality, someone ho was comfortable on camera, like she could’ve hosted her own show. I’m surprised I never saw her guest host Soul Train. She was cute & funny as Aunt Una from Altoona, on the sitcom Family Matters. 🧡🙏🏾🌟

State of independence was written and recorded by Yon Anderson and Frank Vangelis. You should really have listened to their original version. It's different in ways but incredible as well!

Yes, I presume on first listen it can be a difficult song to catch - it has unusual movements - it shifts without notice, hasn't really a conventional structure. A song that maybe needs 3 or 4 listens before its rhythm relaxes itself into the brain. But once in there, the brain doesn't release it.

Wonder if they had any need to change the key for Donna Summer, since Jon Anderson who sang the original has a high tenor voice. Back then this was liked both by the critics and the audience.

Yeah, I'm not crazy about this song, either. The Woman In Me is a better song off of her self titled album. Her vocals are really good on that song. But check out Love Is Just A Breath Away! It's from the same album and should have been a single. Absolutely flawless vocal!

Prefer the original than this 9ne. Jon sang it better... and vangelis kn9ws how to create decent melody.....
