Hydraulic ram pump working principle: water rushes trough the drive pipe and the waste valve and slams it shut, the occurring hydro shock forces water up through the second valve underneath the pressure chamber. When the pressures equalize the second valve closes and now the compressed air in the pressure chamber forces the water uphill through a smaller diameter tube.

Hi from New Zealand, we are a Nation of getting it done. I too have a home built Ram pump. Been going 7 yrs now. 1 thing for you to do is swap out the fire extinguisher pressure vessel for a bladder pressure tank off an old electric pressure pump. Job sorted, mine had a bike tube in the old one, that burst. 15psi is adequate. Good luck m8.

Good video as always. We use a ram pump to pump our spring water into a tank for more pressure. We've found that a smaller ID pump tends to pump more then a larger ID pump(the smaller pumps have less wastage). Did you put anything in the fire extinguisher(like a pool noodle, or pipe insulation)? We started out putting pool noodles into 4" PVC pipe capped off on one end and necked down to the size of the pump. Pool noodles work pretty well though as time goes on they start to get compressed and water logged and need changed. We've started to use diaphragm tanks they last about 2 or 3 years before they rust through. That's still alot longer then the noodles. We've never tried just air in the tank. If your worried about the pump freezing just submerse it in water and let it keep pumping. The feed line and the output shouldn't freeze if the water keeps moving. Great video as always, thought I would share some knowledge my dad and I have learned over the years.

The best design is to have the "clack" valve in front of the air chamber, this way when the air chamber "pulls" in the water it also has a tendency to pull down on the clack valve. Otherwise the clack valve might get stuck closed having it after the air chamber.

@iz57724 жыл бұрын
I'd get rid of the last green pipe and straight to the pond, that will have much less friction and give you more pressure and volume. Further more, if its just 1 m drop, you can put an elevated 220l barrel on a ramp 10m from the pump, and connect it to the stream at higher level. This will give you higher drop of 1.5-2 m, and shorter distance to the pump... again, less friction inside the tube.

I use a ram pump at my cabin. I found that the larger the tank the more pressure I get. I use an old well tank with an inflatable bladder. I also get better results using a foot valve at the waste gate. I can add weight to keep it open longer. These will move a lot of water. Great idea for your pond.
@bruceaskin96455 жыл бұрын
My question what is the actual valve that causes it to operate
@robpridgen37915 жыл бұрын
@@bruceaskin9645 The waste valve slams shut causing a water hammer effect. This pushes water up the smaller pipe. It resets the gate when pressure drops opening the waste gate again. Cycle then repeats. Both valves are necessary.

If you have a stream with dirty water that's near a clean water spring, look into a dual acting Ram pump. Uses the water from the Stream to pump the water from the spring. Even though they both go into the same chamber somehow they don't mix!

Sorry for my english (im from 🇺🇦) But 1,5 litters for this huge lake is so little. Every hour from this lake water going to the ground more than water which get in to the lake from your pump. It was dood idea not to stop stream at those small river, its good to nature. But I recommend you ti instal more powerful pump (may be electric pump). You should pay for electricity, so install not powerful pump. It will be more correctly, and more water will come. And lake will be cleaned more faster. Nice work, best wishes :)

You have achieved 720 gallons of pumped water in 24 hours , given the modest size of this pump this is excellent , we have an original Blake Hydram & it will manage 500 gallons in 24 hrs , the secret is in regarding the drivepipe as part of the pump , hit the waste valve with a big diameter , hard core of water to get it to snap shut profoundly , the harder & more deliberate the snap-shut on the waste or clack valve , the more she pumps ! hit the efficiency critical on the incoming water speed down the drivepipe . Your brass flap valves work better than the old - fashioned rubber disc ones , although might not last as long . Well done , congratulations from central england , excellent . Have a look at this company,s website ; Allspeeds , Accrington , Lancashire , England , & look again under either Hydrams or John Blake Hydrams , lots of water flow data on here , this company still makes these & I believe , exports worldwide . Best Regards .
