Finally! One of my favorites. Thank you! The way Lefty had that gun pointed at Donnie always made me think he was about to clip him after Donnie clipped the guy on the boat right before the FBI appeared.
@lizd2943
@lizd2943 17 сағат бұрын
If Donnie had killed the guy that would prove he wasn't an agent. He was set to become made if he had carried out the hit and Lefty would have angered the bosses by killing him unless he did something to give himself away, like refusing to kill the guy. Of course, that confrontation didn't happen irl.

That never happened in the real case. The writers took some creative liberties
@tapoemt3995
@tapoemt3995 13 сағат бұрын
@@lizd2943 Lefty was concerned about Donnie being a rat, even as Lefty passes him, he said I'm your best friend which made Donnie hesitate in relation to Lefty telling him you go in alive and come out dead and it's your best friend that does it. Also, Donnie, along with the audience, is looking at Lefty pointing his gun at him on the dumpster. As far as angering the Bosses, they wouldn't have known. Lefty could've whacked Donnie and told them there was a shootout and Bruno killed Donnie with Lefty just ditching the gun. Not like he couldn't get another. It's clear the audience is made to question this part as the scene has 3 moments where Donnie briefly thinks Lefty could kill him.

The movie changes some of the facts and events . In real life it was Sonny Black that became the closest to Pistone . He was the one who took off his stuff and knew he wouldn't be coming back . But Pacino's portrayal of Lefty was excellent .. and had his personality down amazing . Lefty was never killed he was released years later when he was dying of cancer .

This movie is so accurate in regard to how the Mafia operated during this time, that even former "members" who were arrested and served time praise this movie for the accuracy of how the characters are shown. Even if there are a few "Hollywood moments" added in AND the fact that it is told from the point of an undercover Fed.... the WAY that they had people written and the way the actors portrayed the situations, they applaud the movie for the attention to details that most movies overlook. Such as the way they talk, how they can flash all this money around and yet be "broke" most of the time... but most importantly that no matter who well you do, if you don't "produce the cash" the bosses will toss you aside in nothing flat.

They changed the ending for the movie, incidentally. It wasn't Lefty who got whacked when they found out Donnie was an FBI agent. It was Sonny Black. Lefty went to prison and had nothing good to say of Donnie over it. He despised him. But the movie demanded a different outcome so they turned the murderer Lefty into a tragic hero. And Sonny Black did not whack Nicky. That too was backward. "Nicky Mouth" Santora had by this time become a boss. And he is the one who had Sonny Black whacked.

The movie takes some liberties with actual events. For example, Joe Pistone started out connected to a Colombo family soldier named Jilly Greca (who Lefty talks to at the barbershop at the beginning of the movie) before eventually hooking up with Bonanno soldier Anthony Mirra. When Mirra was sent to prison, Pistone became associated with Lefty Ruggiero. Through him, he met Sonny Black, who's actually more of a model for Pistone's relationship with Lefty in the movie than real-life Lefty. However, Pistone served as the best man at Lefty's wedding to Annette. However, he felt no emotional connection to him, like he did with Sonny Black. Sonny Black in the movie is based more on Anthony Mirra, the guy who first brought Pistone into the Bonanno Family, including his violent temper. Sonny was the one who took his valuables off after being sent for. In fact, the Mafia cut his hands off for allowing a rat to shake hands with a boss like Trafficante and introducing Donnie as a "friend of ours," a made guy when he was only a connected guy. Lefty, however, went to prison and refused to turn witness. In fact, after his trial, he vowed to "Get that rat Donnie Brasco if it's the last thing I ever do." Pistone has written several books about his years undercover. I haven't read Donnie Brasco, except for some excerpts, but I have read The Way of the Wiseguy, which I highly recommend. It's a fascinating insight into the daily stuff about the Mafia and dispels some of the Hollywood myths rather nicely. Especially when compared to books like Wiseguy, Henry Hill's memoir, which serves as a puff piece for Henry, where it romanticizes things a bit.
@NWAWskeptic

Yeah. I would love if they made an HBO 1-3 season series based on Donnie Brasco. A vehicle that would have more room to delve into the actual story. Mirra was a psychopath who allegedly had sex with very famous actresses. He would make a very interesting character. Like Richie Aprile and Ralph Cifferetto all in one. As well as the other undercover agents involved that were nowhere near as inept as the one they illustrated in the movie who assisted with Kings Court. The book was great. So many interesting sub stories.

Lovely reaction - another film drawing on this material is Deep Cover, starring Lawrence Fishburne and Jeff Goldblum, one of the best of the 90s, and I think American Hustle also involves that boat - the 90s is full of hidden gems, and Depp had an interesting career then, and was discussed as an heir to Pacino and Brando - IMO his greatest film is Dead Man - also see Edward Scissorhands, Benny and Joon, Gilbert Grape, Arizona Dream, Ed Wood, Don Juan DeMarco, Fear and Loathing, Astronaut's Wife, Sleepy Hollow, Sweeney Todd

Hecks yeah, Johnny Depp and Al Pacino just made a movie together(I don't think it's gonna be good, but it's still cool!). If you haven't seen Johnny Depp, you definitely need to watch Blow, Gilbert Grape, Fear and Loathing, Benny and Joon, and all of the time burton ones

The fact-based book written by Joe Pistone (Donnie Brasco) himself is even more riveting. For me, the film bogs down during his interactions with his wife.

There's so much to love about this film and Bruno Kirby is definitely one of them. And it might be my favorite Pacino performance. For me it's right up there with the first Godfather.
