This video made me realize that history is taught so backwards. We're taught events and traditionalist history. But what needs to be taught is the basics of society and civics, then finally get to how human beings struggle to make a society. Not the "1776 we declared our freedoms" bullshit. It's mostly just horseshit to push you along so you can be a good consumer as a work trained adult and cry eagle tears when the NFL flies the flag.

It's super interesting to contrast something like Franklin to the typical American history class, in that this series follows a more holistic approach of how different aspects of society impact its history. Not to take anything away from donoteat, hes not a charismatic presenter in the typical sense (though he has his own charm), but this is absolutely more interesting the the presentation of linear events of a typical history class that has to conform to standardized testing parameters. Super cool, and as is often bemoaned, something I'm sure more students could easily be fascinated by and invested in were it presented better

9:39 Actually the Executive Council of Pennsylvania was the 12-member body that acted as the executive branch of the state until 1790. The Pennsylvanian Constitution of 1776 adopted a directorial system, where the executive is made up of two or more people that collectively exercise the powers of the branch, which was quite unique at the time. While the Council did select a President and Vice-President, this was a Primus inter pares (first among equal) and did not incur any additional power. A fun fact is that the Constitution of 1776 may have inspired the the French Constitution of 1793, which included an executive council of 24 people.

Hamilton the musical actually was going to mention the Whiskey Rebellion, there was a workshopped song called ‘One Last Ride’ which would have been about the Whiskey Rebellion and Washington stepping down from the presidency. Then, for what reason I don’t know, Lin Manuel-Miranda decided to edit the song to remove the aspect of the Whiskey Rebellion, made it solely about Washington and Hamilton’s relationship, and renamed It ‘One Last Time’ before putting it back into the musical.
@xalrath4 жыл бұрын
same reason he cut exactly why he fell out of favor with John Adams the play needs the reason Hamilton becomes bad that he got caught screwing around on his wife for the first time, not that he literally made his name gunning down those insolent peasants and then after he tried to gin up a war with France John Adams told him "i've arranged for peace, you warmongering asshole. you are going to take Washington's syphilitic corpse off that horse you've nailed it to, come home, and if anyone tells me you've set ONE FOOT on french territory without authorization I will take great pleasure in hanging your ass." Hamilton backed Jefferson not because he believed Jefferson had beliefs, but because he wanted to hurt Adams as much as possible for taking his cool war from him.
@dylanchouinard61414 жыл бұрын
Yankee Ice Yeah, as I’ve grown I’ve begun to notice how much of an elitist Hamilton was and how the musical erases some of his less empathetic traits (though it should be noted it also doesn’t hesitate to show Hamilton in the wrong). But in the shows defense, it did help get me out of my edgy monarchist phase (which is incredibly ironic, I know), and also the songs just fucking slap
@xalrath4 жыл бұрын
@@dylanchouinard6141 the argument that I will absolutely give Miranda is that the single best song in the musical is also why his politics are so shit The Room Where It Happens is 1. extremely good 2. based on his dad, who was (and still is) a midsize wheel in new york/puerto rican politics, telling his wimpy theatre kid son to get out of the kitchen while him and his buddies hammered out what they were going to let happen at any formal meetings. Miranda's quote on the subject is "If my dad had been a butcher, I would be a vegetarian. He is a politician, so I wrote Hamilton." he doesn't really care about the history, he is trying to tell a story, and so historical hamilton takes a backseat to "what if one of the Founding Fathers was also the protagonist of 8 Mile, and also me"
@madelinebitts27664 жыл бұрын
@@xalrath I would also point out that he based the musical mostly on a book he read about Hamilton. He didn't exactly pay much attention to the real history, just the juicy stuff. The musical isn't about Hamilton, the real man, it's about Hamilton, the historical figure as told by the couple of books Lin read.

To be fair to the Whigs: between Jackson's slave-ownership and pro-slavery stance, his "nepotism is good, actually" approach to civil service positions, and his tendency to ignore constitutional checks and balances when they became inconvenient for him (especially when it got in the way of his racist bloodlust) did make him tyrant material. The Whigs just arrived at the right conclusion via the wrong (bourgeois moon logic) reasoning, and could reasonably be called tyrants themselves for a lot of the same reasons their quasi-predecessors the Federalists could be. tl;dr everyone involved was monstrous, and American political history is basically all horrifying
