Had the honor of seeing Flabba play this weekend. Roots Radics was backing Israel Vibration. Looked like Flabba was playing a Steinberger bass (no headstock, square body). What a beast! A true living legend.

Very cool, thanks for this video Don! I recognized about 8 of them...some I'd never heard before! I had the honor of backing Nicodemus about 30 years ago and recognized that line. Flabba's been such a creative bassie! I love what he did on Barrington Levy's version of "Moonlight Lover"; he switched around the two halves of the original bassline to give it a more 'modern' feel. Check out the Joya Landis original and compare it to the B. Levy version, it gives a hint of what a brilliant bass player Flabba can be!
@donstrumental19 ай бұрын
If I remember correctly you mentioned that on my first Flabba video which did make me go and check out the two versions. Geeky bass stuff. I love it. Wowzer... you played with Nicodemus.

@@donstrumental1 Thanks Don, sorry, at my age the memory's the second thing to go LOL...yes I had the honor of backing Demus and several other singers on a western USA tour in the early to mid 90s. Despite his gangsta persona he was a true genklemon and a pleasure to work with. btw I worked for a while with Tippa Irie, who you probably know and have worked with. And yes, I'm somewhat of a reggae bass geek...I mean, I've been called a "reggae nazi" (and worse) by those fans of the whitewashed subgenre called "cali reggae," which has taken over in popularity from Jamaican reggae out here. Its practitioners could learn a lot from you.
@donstrumental19 ай бұрын

What can I do on the high ends to get my sound more crisp because I can sound like old dub but I wanna sound like Studio One. I currently use a Music Man Stingray double humbucker with D’Addario flatwound strings and a Boss GT-10B Effects Processor. All plugged into a Fender 100W bass amp.
@donstrumental19 ай бұрын
I think you're over thinking it. It looks like you have good gear. There is no difference between Studio One and "old dub" from a bass perspective. Good technique will make any bass sound good. A bit of a boring answer but that's all you need.
