The TIS lists the recommended coolants for BMW, most BMWs manufactured up to June 2018, some up to the end of 2018, have the specification G48 (BMW LC-87), blue. From this date, the green fluid, Frostox HT-12 (BMW LC-18) is used. Only for MINI R55, R56; W16 diesel engine, the coolant specification is G30-91, (BMW LC-07) purple and other fluids are not allowed there, even when topping up. Risk of damage! Coolants must not be mixed arbitrarily. In principle, the vehicle must be filled with the coolant it was delivered with from the factory. Coolant can gel and this can lead to engine damage if mixed.

Americans are notorious for their disdain for vehicle maintenance and treat a BMW like a 90s Camry. These cars are intolerant of skipped maintenance. Typically they buy them used and the previous owner did no maintenance to them so they can be a baller on a budget. One by one things fail and they replace things one at a time until they're buried financially. Then they sell the car for next to nothing and sh!t all over the brand to anyone who will listen.

Thank you Soo much, I just had to replace my radiator and in a pinch we had to use prestone Did not know before that color makes a difference until my son got an VW Atlas and the coolant is Purple . It is not interchangeable . My radiator was replaced and he bled the system and BMW coolant only $30 bottle. 2015 35i X3 Xline

Zerex G48 for mine and a brass radiator plug. Got rid of the plastic one. $12 upgrade. Have not done the aluminum mickey mouse flange yet. Also, don't forget to bleed the air from the system.

I topped off with Zerex also. It actually said it's for use in european cars. Pretty sure it's okay to use. The heater wasn't heating anymore and it's usually due to low coolant. Works like a charm.

I've worked on BMWs for a couple years now and I used to be a hater. I believed all my previous coworkers and people online who said they were overpriced trash. That was until I started working on them and realized they're just not... the second generation of N engines and BMW maintenance guidelines just ruined their reputation. Early N63s, N20s, N26s, were all trash motors to begin with but they also came out when BMW switched over to 10k service intervals... These motors have extremely low tolerances if you stretch your oil changes every 10-15k you're just asking for issues. IMO thats where the N55/N63 "rod bearing issue" comes from, just happened to be the first component to fail when it went unlubricated.

It is best to go directly to BMW and buy what corresponds to your specific model. I am talking about coolant, as well as differential oil, power steering oil and gearbox oil. It is also true that there are other engine oils that are even better than the original BMW oil. But I am not going to take any chances when it comes to coolant, including the pump and thermostat. I prefer the original.

I had my waterpump changed by indy bmw garage 1.5 years ago. They apparently used genuine bmw coolant. Car done 8k miles since and waterpump died. Its out of warranty now as it was 1 year only... I wonder if they have just put tap water or what the heck for pump to last 8k miles lol... next one i do myself and I do it properly... with 50/50 febi blue coolant for bmw and destilled water only

Doubt they put tap water in it if they went for genuine BMW coolant. Water pumps for the E46 suck and depending on what brand fail pretty quickly. Bearings go bad. I don't know about later ones with the electric pumps.

Dean, i have a 2015 430d that ive owned for 3 years! First bmw ive owned An mate you have proper open my eyes with the last few videos you have done! 😮 I’ve always changed the oil every 5,000miles as i don’t do much miles an change with the right oil. But im probably coming upto or over the gearbox, coolant, differential fluid change so just wanted to say a big thanks pal for giving us people who are not in the know about what to use! The reason i asked about diff is… Ive had 2 recalls at bmw, the first recall was EGR and when that was done they did a free health check thing lol and told me my diff was making a noise and they can do a top up for around £200. I didnt go ahead with that because I’ve never heard any noise myself from the diff. And id opt for removing of old diff oil and put new in. Anyways 5 months later i get a recall for airbag and they do the free health check again and nothing about the noise from the diff came up this time 🤔 in yet id done nothing with the diff oil or diff from the previous time they said something was wrong 🤷🏻 the first time they sent me a video off what they picked up on the health check and in the video there was nothing about the diff. 🤷🏻ive lost all faith in the uk bmw dealership where i live 🤷🏻 maybe there right or not i dont know… but what i do know is ive not had any problems or noise or anything from my diff… anyways i did endup ringing bmw and asking what oil to put in the diff and thay couldn’t tell me but could sell it me… so i still not 100% sure what the correct stuff is 🤷🏻 but i do know an trust your opinion and thoughts if you have time.

You have to tell witch Coolant for BMW up to witch Year of Build I see that Liqui Moly KFS 11 is suitable for lots of Modells I wouldent recoment Ptestone either, I have tried to top up KFS 12 with it and it sort of swimms on top of that red coolant .I doesnt mix properly.My experience with prestone is I really cant find out in witch cars its the proper coolant so better stay away from it.Get the coolant according spec of the manufacturer.

BMW say no: Prescribed mixture for coolant: 50 % antifreeze for antifreeze protection up to -40 °C The original coolant mixture for the initial filling at the factory has this antifreeze-to-water ratio. If the proportion of antifreeze is less than 40 % to -29 °C (i.e. the water content is higher than 60 %), not only the degree of protection against freezing, but also corrosion protection is reduced. When the water content is too high, this can lead to premature excess temperature in very hot weather or hot climates and as a consequence lead to coolant being ejected out of the system and damage to the engine through excess temperature. This means that it is essential that an antifreeze and corrosion inhibitor is added even in the tropics.

if a car is engineered to run with unicorn semen for coolant instead of taking a standard 50/50 blend of DI water that's called bad engineering. And before you say it, yes, I am an engineer who builds multi-million dollar production systems and one of my most important challenges is to design systems that don't require ops teams to search for maintenance items made from adamantium claws, unicorn semen, velociraptor excrement, or any other unobtanium long lead time non-readily available items.

@@jackassrower As an engineer surely you would agree that a coolant in a system full of metal parts should probably have some anti-corrosive properties. If you've ever tried building a custom cooling system for a PC, you'll know how hard it is to make sure the entire system is built in a way that parts wont interfere with each other and cause corrosion or build-up issues. BMW made the decision a long time ago that having a system that has certain anti-corrosive properties in the coolant was the way to go. And it ain't unicorn semen. I got a BMW used that had a slight coolant leak, when I took it to my mechanic and told him I was going to manage the problem for a bit (there were other things that needed to happen so it was a budget thing), he said "just use blue. Nothing else. Just make sure it's blue". Went into the auto shop, the blue was the same price as all the other colours, I got the blue, kept it topped up, never had an issue until I got around to replacing the radiator.

Im blessed to have found you I am desperate to get an honest opinion on what has happened to my car. New tires installed on 05 325xi bmw. Sailun Atrezzzo 205/55/16. Caused terrible problems felt too big . Steering wheel vibration, rubbing. Steering wheel stick turning sharp. Lurching on incline,,the engine or tranny struggled to get up the incline. Pulling to left. Took car back the dealer told me his tech checked the suspension, breaks, tranny. Etc.Claimed i was imagining what happened. But i demanded different brand of tire. So next i.had previous Cooper's installed ,drove off, stopped at a light.suddenly Steering wheel had a strong shudder then vibration..the dealer said car needed another alignment. Took it to a garage. They said it from the left front tire was out of round. . the tire dealer said they lied. I was delusional. So I had another tire dealer Replace the defective tire with new Cooper tire. BUT the vibration was less but still remains. Now the Car pulls to the right. This dealer says it's just the old car, Big question ,could driving on misfitting Sailiun tires for 30miles have caused the car to develope these ongoing problems. Car had alignment 1 month prior to Sailun plus an inspection. Only red flag was left rear shock was leaking . I'm so confused what to do now. Take it somewhere and pay $150 for inspection. And hear it's the cars fault. I will on the news for losing my mind. I wish for Xmas a reasonable explanation . Thank you for your time.

@dman7516 yes these tires were Installed at a tire store. But, idk,,. I was told that the Sailun tires have a unique tread pattern, made the tire wider. Sad ,the Altrezzo were not the one I asked for. I researched the Aspire was better suited for BMW. But .. Then when switched for the Cooper's. I asked if they had been balanced. But turned out one was out of round. Hence the worse vibration. A new tire store replaced the defective tire, car pulls to one side and the steering. vibration is still present. AND of course. I'm being told it's my imagination.. I'm curious if anyone has a thought on what the oversized S tire could have caused. . I cant afford to spend more $. To chase the issues. Will just learn to live with the issues then sell the car in spring. Thanks for your comment. Mari .

There is so much nonsense being said in this video that it's difficult to know where to start. Suffice it to say that on my shelf I have red coolant, blue coolant, colourless coolant and green coolant from several different manufacturers. All of them are OAT and all of them contain both freezing-point depressant and anti-corrosion additives. In fact, I doubt whether it is possible to buy an OAT coolant of any colour which does not contain anti-corrosion additives suitable for aluminium blocks.

Claim that red g12 coolant is not for BMW is not true. Original/ OEM G12 coolant is used in modern Audi / Vw engines. So, what modern BMW engines have so much different in the term of technology and engine design compared to modern Audi / Vw engines ? There are different types of coolants. Inorganic, hybrid and organic. You can use different coolants than specified if its the right type of coolant. The color is just dye. In a modern high volume german specialty shop I worked at, we had a universal coolant supplier with a high quality coolant and dye to match the different german brands.
