DEAN! I have a 2006 E60 525i (N52) BMW. I did my 200K mile transmission service. In it, I replaced all the solenoids, the fluid pan (from plastic to aluminum), filter, gaskets and fluid (Pentosin ATF-6). Before I Serviced the transmission, I put BG - Quick Clean in and ran the transmission for about 25 minutes and shifted in all 6 gears. I noticed that the fluid level on draining the fluid was about 8 & 1/2 liters. The BG - Quick Clean did a fabulous job cleaning all the parts! So, I put 8 & 1/2 Liters back in. I also put the BG - ATC Plus conditioner in. After Resetting the actuation of the Transmission in INPA, it runs PERFECTLY at 200K miles. YOU ARE THE MAN! Listen closely folks, DEAN knows! He is 100% on these cars!

Cautionary tale for you all... My first BMW (little 323i), the garage close to me I thought could do the work to maintain the car. Well, they destroyed it. Never dealt with issues and made a mess. This prompted me to learn how to work on and repair an N52 and subsequently other BMW engines. The moral of this story is to never trust always ask and if you feel even slightly suspicious don't take the car there. By the way I kept the little 323i and rebuilt it... Still have it as my around town daily car. She taught me a huge amount about how to work on a BMW. And yes, I change the transmission fluid but only with the right one, and out here in New Zealand it can cost a little to get it out here, but sooner pay that than put a new transmission in.

Brilliant video. Im sick of people making these mistakes. I went to a "specialist" to check my fluid levels on my GM gearbox... the tech freaked out when he saw the dexron fluid "its not supposed to be red".... its dexron 6! Its meant to be red. Made me wonder how many gm boxes have the golden zf fluid because if this silly mistake.... its not as if there isnt a noce green sticker on the pan saying what part number the fluid is.

Hi had experience exactly what you just said about asking a garage to change my transmission fluid on my e93 , he said you dont ever change the fluid and refused to do it even though I told him I changed the pan a few years ago. So I had to do it myself the reason I couldn’t get the car in the garage which meant I had to do it on the drive which I really didnt want to do at this time of the year. So just endorsing everything you just said is very true but people would believe the garage. Glad you have posted this video I wonder how many people has been mislead by garages ?

I have heard from so many people that if you have a high milage automatic transmission and the fluid hasn't been changed before, you should leave it alone or you can have problems. They say it's because all the 'gunk' in the oil fluid that's well past it's change interval gets dislodged by the detergents in the new fluid and can block up channels and things. I have an E60 with 265,000km (160k miles). I don't know it's entire service history, I want to change the fluid but I'm worried I'll kill it.

Great video. But it is the manufacturers who state that gearboxes are "sealed for life", so you can understand people believing that they don't need servicing. It is dealers with specialist knowledge of the cars that service the gearboxes because they know they absolutely are not "sealed for life". But the manufacturer will still tell you they are, and there won't be any service procedures in their official data. Don't know if BMW claims their boxes are "sealed for life" but plenty of manufacturers do.
