Dr Jerome wrote a book on how crowns are bad for your teeth. Its much better for your teeth to get onlays, inlays or fillings because you keep more tooth structure. He says that crowns are far more prone to cavities than other options because you cant keep them clean . You are also also more prone to gum inflammation and recession with crowns. Drilling teeth down to stubs for crowns often damages or kills them.

I'm so glad I found this video! For insurance reasons, I've been stuck with a sketchy dental practice for two years. Every time I went in for just a cleaning, they would insist on taking X-rays and selling me hard on dental implants and crowns. The office manager (who is also a partner, so he has a profit motive) is a VERY condescending man who tried to bully me into agreeing to two crowns that I didn't want - "Well, okay, but if your teeth fall out, we warned you". I asked why I "needed" crowns and he said that I have a space between two teeth and two crowns were needed to fill the space. No mention of any damage or fracture, which made me listen to that little rumbling in my stomach telling me something didn't sound right, but hey, we're just patients and they're the experts, so we think they know best. This guy was overjoyed when my insurance approved the crowns and left me a voice mail saying he was booking me the next morning, like, didn't even ask me if I was available! I listened to that rumbling and I called back to cancel and left a message that I wanted someone to call me back to discuss this and that was a week ago and no one has called back. I described this to a friend's dentist dad and he said no, this is VERY suspicious and told me to drop them right away and he helped me find a new dentist who is Ivy League trained with a good rep for the past 30 years. I have an appt on Jan 10 and I will tell him that unless my life is at stake, I am NOT having any kind of implant or crown put in my mouth. I was always very uncomfortable with that former practice because the service was very impersonal. Over two years, I had a different dentist for each visit, none of whom ever introduced themselves to me or gave me their names unless I asked, and definitely no pleasantries. They also spoke Russian in front of me, so I didn't know what they were saying (not dissing Russians, I live in "Little Russia" in Philly and have had other Rusdian dentists who were wonderful). Seems like a ton of turnover at this place and honestly it's put me off trusting any kind of doctor at all because of the constant upselling of irreversible decisions. I almost had my TEETH filed down! Luckily I trusted my gut, got a second opinion, and you tubed a bunch of videos - including this one - and was able to make an informed decision. To anyone reading, my advice is to always trust your gut - if you get a rumbling stomach, it's for a reason - and do extensive research first before being talked into any kind of medical procedure, learn to advocate for yourself and don't let fear rule your decisions. Most importantly, ALWAYS look out for red flags like I described this shady practice has. Thank you for posting this video!

I went to Los Algodones, Mexico aka Molar City, I needed 2 root canals 1 crown and a cleaning, it ended up costing me around 800 dollars out of pocket, I literally save thousands dollars and I couldn't be happier. There were folks there from the US, Canada and even Europe getting extensive dental work done for pennies on the dollar. I ended up there after my dentist here in the US wanted to do a surgical extraction and then a 3 unit bridge, I was quoted $5000 USD's, that didn't include the oral surgeon, the 5 grand quote was my out of pocket after insurance just for the bridge. The dentist in Mexico told me that the extraction wasn't necessary and that a root canal through the existing crown would take care of my problem and it certainly did. To this day I and my bank account couldn't be happier with the dental work I got in Mexico.

I’m so pissed right now. I went to a place called Abbey Dental in Las Vegas. They put crowns on tooth number 12 and 13. I did not notice that they didn’t have a perfect seal until I got home. I went there today to point out that there’s no perfect seal on either tooth you can see the underlying tooth structure. And food is also getting inside the crown or tooth. They also did a bait and switch on me. They would not give me a copy of my treatment plan. I asked for it three times. They kept ignoring me or promising me to send it in my email. I went back today to have them fix the two teeth. When I got there, the assistant looked at my mouth and then said let me go get the doctor. Five minutes later she returns and says oh we’re gonna have to reschedule you And I go what do you mean? Aren’t you guys working on me today? I have waited two weeks for this appointment and took off of work. She proceeds to tell me that the doctor is not there. Then I start telling her how they would not give me a copy of my treatment plan. She says to me. I can print that up…. but please don’t tell them I did this for you. When I initially agreed to the work with them, they told me I would be getting zirconia crowns. When I first saw these crowns they put in my mouth they look different from the other zirconia and crown that I got on my bottom just three months earlier. I went to a different dentist for that. I even asked them before they put them in if they were zirconium I was told yes. But they were very very white. They do not match my teeth at all. So I finally get that copy of the treatment plan and on the treatment plan, it shows that, I was to get porcelain ceramic crowns. Only they gave me the zirconium price. And they added a 25 year limited warranty for almost $400. I did not agree to that at all. I’m almost afraid for them to do the work. I’m afraid they’re gonna pull out the other two teeth when they try to take these crowns off. If anybody is a Dr. here or works in the dental industry, what would you do if you were me?

@northtexasdentalsurgery I feel so much regret. I had taken my 76 year old father to a dentist to have dental crowns, because his tooth were worn down and became sensitive. You could see the "yellow" parts of his tooth (which I understand to be the soft tissue or the nerves) and we were advised that the dental crowns would actually protect the natural teeth from losing the last bits of the enamel and fully exposing the nerves which would require a root canal. So we have taken the advice and done crowns for most of the upper and lower teeth. Now, my father says his teeth feels like prosthetics. He can't feel his teeth, and he accidentally bites his tongue and cheek. He does not feel anything when there is something in between the teeth. He is so depressed that his teeth feels so artificial. I feel so much guilt for taking him there in the first place and putting him through all this pain and trouble at this old age. It has been a month since the permanent crowns were placed and we have done 2 fittings to file /trim them down smaller. I think we have reached the limit of fitting further as the crown material left is so thin now. Is there any hope at all that the teeth will ever feel like natural (feeling the heat, cold, something being stuck etc)? I would appreciate your response very much, Dr. Choi, if you see this comment.

I had an appointment after a wk and i had her check my swollen gums, she pricked and pressed and she said has fluid inside. I asked her what happened why it become swollen right after the filling. She said maybe. I ate something and the food got stuck in there and coz the infection. I was little worried maybe she never remove properly the tooth decay that causing the gums get swollen. She prescribed amoxil for me to take for 5 days and will come back to her on Monday. What do you think Doc why my gums get swollen after the filling?

Is the hardness of a zirconia crown wearing down the opposing molar a concern? Do you have to remove more of the tooth to fit a zirconia crown than a gold crown? Can this be a problem long term? Does a gold crown seal to the underlying tooth better than a zirconia crown, thus keeping out bacteria better?

Hi Everyone! Comments are all over the place here. I am a dental professional and clinical instructor, so I would like to think I know a thing or two about the subject at hand. Sometimes dental crowns are overkill, but it depends on the situation at hand. I look at a patient’s mouth in terms of risk: Functional: does the bite further deteriorate the teeth. Cavities: Does this patient have a tendency for further decay? Bone/Gums: Does the supporting tissue at risk for breakdown? Based on these factors, I may diagnose 1 or more crowns / remove teeth / etc; in order to alleviate risk for that patient. Before even recommending care it’s imperative that the clinician educate the patient as to why the conditions are happening so a strong restoration is not only done well but can also last a long time. I charge about $1500 per crown and I am proud of my prices since I use the best labs, I am well trained and have the experience to back up my results, my staff is also well trained and gives the patient as good of an experience they can have in a dental setting. I get the, let’s go to Mexico to do some cheaper dentistry, but in our profession, you get what you pay for.

Doctor, I don't understand what you are saying about proper seal. All zirconia crowns are placed over the tooth only, not inserted in between the gums like PFM. With time, gum will recede, and will show original tooth structure underneath. So, are you saying this natural gum recession will make all zirconia crowns fail because there is now a small gap between crowns and gum?

It's their dam job to advise you with your well being first and foremost. If they want to be conmen, treat them like the scumbags they want to act like. I had an upper anterior 4 crown prosthesis [made of porcelain fused to metal] put on back in November 2023. Four months in, it's chipped off in 3 different places and has fallen out four times already. My dentist says that's nothing to worry about and puts it down to bruxism also. My hunch tells me something might be wrong, as in I don't trust him anymore because I feel he's not being straight with me. Also, if I may, what would you recommend in terms of material since porcelain fused to metal has demonstrably proved to be of poor quality? I don't have a big budget, I hasten to add. And how common/normal is it for a prosthesis, such as mine, to pop out that often in such a short time? Your advice will be hugely appreciated. Thank you.

My child went to the dentist with healthy teeth. She had 2 minor cavity and a spot on her eye tooth. When we went they said her mouth was to small for x-ray . They put a sealant that was to protect her teeth. My child said it tasted horrible. It was brown in color. I had a odd feeling. They did a filling . then went back for a minor filling. Which turned into extract the tooth or pull it. Or crown it. It seemed to take a very long time to do this crown she could not find one to fit. She said we may have to just do a filling. I said yes just do a filling. She ignored me. However she said I putting in medicine the brown stuff. I feel it was met to harm the tooth not help. The crown seems way to big. And they never did x-ray even though I paid cash for it at my first appointment. What is that Brown stuff she called medicine . and sealent.

Hello, the doctor said there’s a gap (from the X-rays) in my front crowns. I believe the gap came from a doctor that cleaned it too aggressively and probably removed some of the cement.. the new doctor didn’t mention replacing the crown. I think I should since there’s a gap which bacteria can easily get into. The doctor wants to send me to a specialist to see if I’ll need a root canal under the crown because I had some pain there the other day but it went away. My gut is telling me to replace my crown with someone I can trust.. I don’t have insurance though. Can they just re-cement the old crown? Any information is appreciated

Problem is i cant recal wat procedure was done on that second tooth (was 13 yrs ago). I didn't quite ask qs to another dentist i went to n he said i need a RC done on it. But ive been researching d ill effects of RC n don't wish to do it. In fact i feel THAT RC tooth is infected but he didn't say that. Am planning to get a second opinion from my old dentist but worried as he can be v assertive(n im not🤪) n may insist on RC . Ive been seeing videos from holistic dentists who actually say one can reverse infection in few months with a particular regime. Anyone any suggestions? Thanks a lot.

It depends on what your problem is. If its fractured tooth, it will only get worse. If its a root canal, then you need a crown to cover top unless your dentist is able to do the rtc in a very small space to preserve enough tooth structure at top so it can just be filled.

I’m a rare case of someone who has only had fillings on one side of my mouth and I’ve been able to document what has happened to me in 10 years. In 10 years half of these fillings now need crowns or root canals and crowns because decay formed around the tooth and with less tooth structure because of the fillings it got closers to the nerves and made my teeth sensitive and in bad shape. My recommendation: Do not get filling on your teeth unless you are in pain. Do not get fillings just because you have cavities. Once the dentist starts drilling and removing tooth structure you are now in much WORSE shape then what the bacteria was doing to your teeth. Many Dentist want your money. They are not looking out for your best interest. I eat on the side of my mouth that doesn’t have fillings or any work done because the other side is so uncomfortable with so many issues. I want to document what happened to my teeth.

The ones have fillings have constant problems, sensitivity, darkness around margins (over many years, but still) F'd up cause I remember all the upselling when I look back but was too uneducated to make decisions (which is what every single salesperson counts on) I'm not sure if just NOT filling the tooth is the way to go, but theres certainly something to be said about once the work starts, the dentists got you on the hook.

I find very comforting hearing your story, thanks for sharing. I’m having a similar experience that has left me devastated honestly. I’ve always been fearful of doctors/ dentists for experiences I’ve had in the past that have led me to believe they are not trustworthy what so ever. I went years with out going to a dentist and I would randomly get checked here and there and I was always told my teeth were perfect. I eat mostly plant based so that wasn’t a surprise to me because I don’t eat all that processed, sugary stuff that usually leads to cavities. I let someone persuade me to go again to get my teeth checked after I told them I don’t go to the dentist & it’s been years. This dentist told me I had 8 cavities! That made zero sense to me what so ever. I didn’t have no issues with me teeth prior and again I didn’t eat candy or anything like that. The only reason I thought it could be true is because I was going through depression at the time & thought maybe the times I don’t brush my teeth at night did it but even still it never sat right with me. After I got the fillings done, I had a slight pain in one tooth and when I went back the dentist looked at me like I was crazy and couldn’t tell me why I was experiencing pain. That scared me soo much. I felt like I was re-living my past all over again and I was once again reminded why I don’t trust y’all with shit. So I went 2 years without being able to eat anything hard on that side. I also noticed a hole started to develop and it got bigger overtime which forced me to go get check again despite how scared I was. I was so confused was this a cavity forming? And how so when I just got a filling done in this tooth. Anyways I explained all this to this new dentist and he told me anytime a dentist says you have that many cavities you should always get a second opinion & I really wished I did because I feel like didn’t have anything wrong with my teeth. He told me that she made my filling to deep that I may need a root canal, but then he said he’s actually going to give me this rinse to clean out any bacteria and to come back in a week and see where it was at. Atp I was hopeful because I for sure didn’t want to get a root canal especially at the fault of a dentist who didn’t know what they were doing. I was hoping there would be some other option for me. When I came him to see him he said we are going to give you a filling which caught me off gaurd a bit because how is a another filling supposed to fix the pain when it seems like the previous filling being to deep was the cause of it. Mind you him & his assistant are already putting my chair down, putting their equipment on me and before I knew it he was ready to numb me, all while I’m trying to communicate and get some answers, looking back I felt very rushed. So I asked so I should experience anymore pain after this and he said no. After the work was done still being a little confused as to what has been going on with my tooth so I just asked him again so you think what happened was that the last dentist went to deep with the filling (which is what he told me when we initially met) he then says noo she didn’t go DEEP ENOUGH. In this moment my head is spinning nothing makes any sense you told me it was because it was too deep now your telling me it wasn’t deep enough. How was going deeper supposed to fix anything. So confused. Atp it was already done and of course I’m numb I can’t feel anything I just kept praying to god that after it heals my teeth will be back to normal. Little did I know the hell that was waiting for me. It’s been about 2-3 months since the filling. I now COMPLETELY can’t eat on that side of my mouth, a tiny crumb can pass through and it hurts. I get random pains throughout the day. I get pains when I lay down. I feel pains that come down my jaw & ear. NOW this is sounding like root canal symptoms. This dentist made it worse. I’m completely hurt because I trusted him to help me. I found the courage to call them to set an appointment and the receptionist says yes, the approval for the crown got approved would you like to schedule that! I tell her the dentist never discussed anything to me about needing a crown. She tells me that according to my file it says that the filling I got may have been so deep that it makes it super sensitive and so the dentist sent in a request for a crown. I’m sooo upset because I’m explain to her this same dentist didn’t discuss any of this with me & instead he apparently gave me a “deeper filling” if I was supposed to get a crown all this time why did I get a filling!? Also why am I just hearing about this 3 months later!???????? If I didn’t reach out I would have never known. So now I feel defeated I truly can not trust these dentist. I have this pain constantly now & I’m again scared that I trust them to do anymore work on me, I’ll leave in worse condition.

Thank you for your video. I have been told by my dentist that I will need about 6 crowns. Damage from grinding and gritting my teeth. There is also a newer treatment called BioClear which can do the same job as crowns without being so invasive. For some reason they seem to be pushing the crowns. I am currently finishing an Invisalign regimen which seems to be quite the thing these days since most dental offices are really pushing them. I do like and trust my dentist, but the prospect of crowns and the thought that a good majority of my tooth structure will be removed to accomodate the crown I find really daunting. So thanks to your video, I will be seeking a second opinion on whether I'm a viable candidate for BioClear. Thank you Dr. Choi

@@horsejumpride8423 As a matter of insurance purposes, they have to take before and after. First, to indicate the work was performed/ justified. Second, if you have bacteria or rot entering the crown, that it is discovered and treated ASAP before further damage (hopefully with routine maintenance instead of someone who hasn't seen a dentist years after dental work.) Third, if the crown fails due to unforseen/untreated rot not discovered or remedied by the dentist, its a red flag to an insurance company that a dentist isn't observant or is intentionally ruining a crown to attempt to bill further dental work in a short future. As previously mentioned in the video, crowns don't last forever and need maintenance. Its one thing a crown fails from biting particular foods or time has allowed bacteria to enter or the material didn't hold up. But its another if the practice neglects the crown, leading to premature wear and tear and ultimate more crown work or extraction and implant.
