@Don't Memorise, How about the product of slopes of x and y axes? Their product is not -1 even though they are perpendicular to each other.

How did you find the coordinates of CD? You said the perpendicular line will look like that but how did you find exactly how the perpendicular line will look like?
@sarathnambiar89764 жыл бұрын
What an irony, the channel's name is "don't memorise", yet they ask us to memorise m1*m2 = -1 and not explain how we arrive at such a conclusion.
@DianaLlovitmacam084 жыл бұрын
It’s actually common sense when you think about it. In order for a line to be perpendicular they have to be going at the same rate but at different directions, that is how we get the 90 degree on all angles. So multiplying both numbers should lead to -1, if one number is positive then it’s perpendicular should be negative and vice versa, if the y value goes up twice like a slope that is 2 then it’s opposite should be x moving twice and y only once which is the 1/2 slope and vice versa.
@sarathnambiar89764 жыл бұрын
@@DianaLlovitmacam08 You are absolutely right mate. However, not everyone has an intuitive mathematical thought or common sense like that of yours, and unfortunately, I fall into that category. Hence, my motive was to only bring the channel's attention to the need for the explanation, as it would help others like myself.

Does bisector mean that the line will intersect the original line at exactly the midpoint? Bisect only means to cut in two, it doesnt mean two equal halfs. Or in this case does it mean 2 equal halfs? In order for something to pass through the midpoint it must "Cut" the original line equally in two.
@unfrozenleaf9707 жыл бұрын
Christina Rosette it's not relevant whether or not it cuts the line in exact halves. That is irrelevant to finding the answer
@wtstickney6 жыл бұрын
Yes, a bisector will cut something in half (exactly two congruent pieces). It is not necessary that the bisector is itself cut in half, however. In the example that she uses, the line segment AB is bisected. It is not possible to bisect an infinite line as there is no way to locate the midpoint though it is always possible to find a perpendicular line.

Why does the product of slope of two mutually perpendicular lines is -1 ?
@wtstickney6 жыл бұрын
Think of it this way: perpendicular is a kind of "opposite" so, your rise becomes run and your run becomes rise. Also, one will have to go up hill and the other down. In the example used, -2/1 * 1/2. No matter what perpendicular slopes you have, the product will be -1.

I'm confused as to why you do Y1-Y2/X1-X2 instead Y2-Y1/X2-X1?
@wtstickney6 жыл бұрын
It doesn't matter. The order is arbitrary. You will either end up with -2/1 or 2/-1. The final answer for the slope of the original line segment is -2. All that matters is that whichever y you use first, you must use that x first, also.

if you have slop -2 and if we will apply your trick ( which you have been explained in your last 5th video - If we have Mid point so for slop we can apply directly formula slop = (-y)/(x) ) - with this trick i will get Mid point (1,2) not (2,1). HOW is that possible then? .
@jatinsharma37926 жыл бұрын
previews question was - P ( 2, -3 ) is the mid point then slop "m" would be 3/2 answer because a/c to formula slop m= (-y)/x.

It is observable that the slopes of 2 perpendicular lines are always negetive reciprocals of each other. And when you multiply negetive reciprocals the product is -1. For example, 2 * (-1/2) = -1 , 5 * (-1/5) = -1 You can check it on a graph with 2 perpendicular lines too. The product of both slopes will always be -1.
