It’s not quite right to say you have disadvantage with ranged attacks on close by creatures because their hit area is smaller. That’s true for prone, but I like to think it’s more that you have disadvantage because the close enemy is harrying or distracting you.

When you roll initiative for the monsters do they attack after the PC’s or wait till after. Let’s say the two highest PC initiative are 15 and 17 and a monster rolled a 16 does the monster go in between the the PC actions

Hey CJ, my friends have asked me to be the DM for the D&D starter set campaign. I have read all the rules and your videos have been helpful, but I'm wondering how to approach the combat. I think it would be easier for my friends to understand what is going on if we played using figures and a grid, but I'm kind of tempted to try combat in our imagination. What do you think about the two different ways to handle combat?
@DontStopThinking7 жыл бұрын
I think you can go somewhere in between. When playing in small confined space, I sometimes use a medium sized whiteboard with magnet pieces to represent the characters' positions. At the start of the game, I clarify that the board is not up to scale and it's only a rough representation. Personally, I always rule generously in my player's favour. I don't want them to worry or muck about with their character's position too much. I'd rather incinerate them with a young dragon than have them worrying about being 1 foot away from being in range to attack a goblin. You can use other props too, or course. But in my opinion it's all about having everyone on the same page and knowing what to expect. But don't forget the power of flair. Using miniatures is one way, but you can also accentuate sessions by doing voices or cosplaying for the game. Miniatures is just one mean to an end.
@Saracenar7 жыл бұрын
That's a good idea, using a whiteboard. I had a thought that I could just approximate the distances and keep rough notes and where the players were during combat and relay that to them as they needed. I'll see what they think before deciding on anything definitively. Thanks!

Awesome vid! But I have a question! If I'm the DM and don't tell my Player's the AC of the gnomes, but the player's roll the die and add their bonus and I tell them whether it hits or not, they start figuring out the AC on their own like ,,ah we had a 14 last time and that hit, this time it was a 13 and it missed so we have to roll at least a 14..". Is that ok? And how should I describe whether a weapon misses or not? After the fifth "and the arrow flies through the air, spinning, right at the gnome, but misses him and stabs into the ground" it starts getting boring or sometimes strange. (e.g. when the enemy is right in front of them but they still fail to hit it with a sword) Help would be appreciated! I'm still a newby DM, but I want my players to have the most fun possible :)

You forgot to mention that the prone orcs would have had disadvantage on their saving throws against the spell attack.
@WulfieZi Жыл бұрын
Being prone doesn't affect your saving throws... it imposes disadvantage on your attack rolls. Attacks against you have advantage when the attacker is within 5 ft., but otherwise they have disadvantage. Burning Hands isn't an attack roll, so it's unaffected by the orcs being prone. It has no effect on your saving throws. You might be confusing it with the restrained condition, which negatively affects your Dexterity saving throws.
