Ich meine , ich guck deine Videos und merke schon, wie informativ die sind, vor allem was die Umgangssprache angeht. Dinge die man in keinem akademischen Buch findet. Und um den Inhalt auswendig zu lernen und beherrschen fehlt mir schwer , das Video mehrmals zu gucken um das zu erreichen.

Thanks for another great German lesson, Trixi! I don't watch horror shows -- guess I'm just an "Angst Hase"! Speaking of Hase, why shouldn't I trust them? And speaking of things scared Germans Say, why do they more and more use English words rather than good old German words? My German wife and I watch a lot of German shows via the streaming app, YouTV. As an Ami, I want to hear German. But here is so much English thrown in. Das macht mich Stock Sauer!

anxiety is often a psychological diagnosis or a laymans abuse of what should be a psychological diagnosis instead of just generally describing a person as timid or afraid of something. If used in that way, the best translation would be "Angststörung" or "Phobie" (the latter one only if it has a specific trigger).

I'm not sure if I've got this right, so I'll write it in my native language as well as my attempt at German: "I am scared of heights/Ich habe Höhenangst ". I apologise if I got that wrong, I admit I had to ask google for the word for fear of heights. While I know it's silly, if my feet aren't touching the ground, or if the ground is a long way away (say, a cliff or bridge), my head spins and I get dizzy and can even pass out.
@somespirit25114 жыл бұрын
Yes, that's the right expression.
@daveemberton52714 жыл бұрын
If you're talking about vertigo, as in feeling dizzy rather than just being afraid, then the word is der Schwindel. Which also means a scam or a con (i.e. swindle) - it comes from the idea that if you con someone you confuse them and make their head spin.
@heidirichter4 жыл бұрын
@@daveemberton5271 So der Schwindel would cover BOTH being afraid and the dizzy feeling? Thank you!

Just want to add some additional wordings for beeing afraid: "Federn haben", "sich in die Hose machen", "Spundus haben". The second one is also often times in dialects more vulgarily expressed. And then there is the austrian sentence of "scheiß di net an" which should mean "don't be afraid" but litteraly means "don't shit yourself".

Gustav, my fiance, never shows fear. It translates to anger too fast. He's "2 Meter und 06 Zentimeter lange. Die Leute nehmen an, dass es bedeutet, dass ich keine Angst habe." He works in Law Enforcement so he's not allowed to show fear but he said, "Jeder, der Kriminelle festnimmt, um sie vor Gericht zu bringen, und Ihnen sagt, dass sie keine Angst haben, lügt Sie an." Angst in English means something similar, though. All the difficult and upset feelings you get from angst must be the result of fears. In English, nobody wants to admit they even HAVE fears. I hate that about my own culture. A person has to act like they're bouncing, giddily, through life on an invisible pogo stick of reckless happiness abandon and if you don't (or CAN'T) do that 24/7 then people decide they don't like you. They judge you for what they don't even see (they have no idea of what I'm hiding in order to be happy SOMEtimes or "see my glass half full instead of half empty." In other words see my life as happy instead of sad. Meeting Gustav made me feel like the glass was filled to the brim and overflowing with happiness. Unfortunately it didn't change my Depression diagnosis. I'm depressed but I hardly ever feel too much anxiety.

Not only because your too cute to be scary but also because after all of those films I've built up an immunity to being scared. It was a rule in our household growing up.
