Americans in Florida, like me, complain about 50F (10 C) as if it were a blizzard, and on mild or warm winter days we complain about the insides of businesses being too cold! We’re really wimpy about cold weather (even our rockets have fallen victim to the cold, such as when several days of below freezing at the Kennedy Space Center, plus the engineering vs politics conflict, brought down Challenger). Florida is a winter paradise, except when it isn’t.

Woo! You're back! Us English also complain about the weather too in much the same way - but we get all the weather at once. Like rain in the morning, snow in the afternoon, sun too bright - and then super dark early. Once folk come here they realise why we talk about it so much. It affects the clothes we have to bring to work - you leave home with super warm clothes and then it's too warm... or in summer it's too hot and then it's cold at some point... It's fairly annoying to basically have to dress for 2-3 seasons on some days. I think we're due snow here soon, it's already snowing in the North. It's usually less cold where it's snowing because if it's too cold it doesn't snow. Or something. *re-edit* ah, you have the same clothing problem. Yup. Germans are just like the English in this way. The train equivalent for our rail is trains cancelled or delayed because of leaves on the line. Because who imagined there'd be leaves in autumn. Or snow in winter. WHAT IS THIS MADNESS?

I agree, sweater on sweater off (don’t know why I said sweater, I’ve always called them jumpers) I rarely wear coats, or get wrapped up in winter, because I’m usually five degrees warmer than everyone else, summer can be exhausting, so yes, I will moan if it’s too warm. Apparently the railways back in the steam age didn’t suffer with leaves on the line. The sparks out of the chimney would set fire to the dry vegetation, razing it back. I’m not sure if that was a good thing, or bad...

Well, I've lived in Germany many years ago. Found it to be a beautiful country and met many very nice people. The Summer was too short from what I was use to and the Winter was nice, just what I liked. I'm a cold nurtured person. Spring and Fall just didn't happen as far as I could tell. I've found in all my travels that people are about the same everywhere. They love to complain, period. Especially if you are a good listener. As for our weather here in the Southeast USA, this is one of those places where you run the heat in the mornings and your AC in the afternoons.....really. This occurs in the Spring and Fall. In the Winter, it's not that cold, to me. Sometimes I will turn the heat on if it's getting below 40 degrees overnight. I normally wear a short sleeve shirt or one over another year round. If it goes below 50 degrees outside, I'll carry or wear a medium coat. If I'm going to be outside and it's below freezing, I'll wear some gloves and a toboggan or hat, maybe. We rarely get snow, but when we do, everyone goes nuts and thinks we are all going to die! Let the weather forecast mention the word snow and everyone starts asking when they are going to close the schools and government offices and everyone rushes out to the grocery store to buy milk and bread. I guess so they can have milk sandwiches??? The Southeast USA is also one of those places where in the summer, you don't perspire, you sweat......no questions about that. It gets so hot, you can expire, for sure and that has happened to some folks. By the way, when you perspire it is suppose to evaporate to help keep you cool. Here in the Summer when you sweat it only gets you wet because the humidity is so high it doesn't evaporate or cool you off, it just gets you wet.......Being hot and wet in the Summer is miserable and we ALL complain about that, unless we are in a swimming pool or cold shower...........
@mitchellhodgemeyer73065 жыл бұрын
I'm firmly in the "I prefer it colder" camp. As you said, one can always put on more clothes or find ways to offset the cold. But when it's very hot, even if you strip down to nothing it's sometimes not enough to relieve the heat. I suppose one could remove their skin as well, but that seems labor-intensive and overly inconvenient. ;) People in the US all the time complain about holiday products in stores too early - myself included. Where I live it never snows, so I haven't heard the "White Christmas" complaint though.

I find it interesting how different individuals can perceive something as simple as temperature in such different ways. I myself would gladly take summer rather than having to endure the cold...for me, being cold is much more uncomfortable than being hot, to the point that it's almost unbearable staying outside for an extended amount of time when temperatures are below 5 °C

Southern USA. It's pretty much the same here. I know not very exciting. We get all four seasons here though in many recent years, snow is not a thing. I know we had it back in the winters of 2007-2010. I like winters for the most part but the cold and wet is horrible for almost everyone. A Home Depot near me had Christmas decorations up BEFORE Halloween. Almost every store that sells goods puts out their Christmas stuff the day after Halloween and FORGET Thanksgiving. I don't see anything related to that day other than food and things used for cooking. So far, this year we've had frost regularly and it's gotten to 22F. A few instances of sleet but nothing major....yet.

Well, a public announcement concerning a train delay I once witnessed amounted to "the rails got wet". What they actually meant was that wet leaves stuck to the rails and made them so slippery that the brakes did not work properly, so the train had to slow down significantly for safety reasons resulting in the delay. But the way the announcement was worded was, let's say unfortunate and gave the 'wet rails' impression (I only got the details quoted above by asking the conductor on the train). Btw, right wing politicians still quote cold in winter as proof that there is no climate change (ignoring the record breaking heat in summer of course).

Every single thing you said is also said in the Midwest in the USA. Especially in Chicago, Illinois and the surrounding areas. I fortunately don't live in a part of my country(U.S.) where it snows. When it gets hot in the US's midwest, it gets damp and muggy - an oppressive, wet, sticky heat. When it gets cold, there's naturally dry air. I am not the only one who feels this way. I have read in declassified military manuals on cold weather operations that in cold, moving slowly and steadily is the best thing to do. I read a book written by an old time American trapper ( late 1800s, early 1900s) book where he wrote that cold complicates everything. That says it best.
