How long did it last before it blew up and what took it out? I'm diving in with almost no prior experience with these things!

@@AutomotiveAdventuresWithAustin Around 77k miles the timing belt broke. i replaced the belt but it walked itself off. I could not figure out why it did that. (I could actually watch it run and slowly walk off,) I suspected crankshaft end play and replaced the motor. Took a while to find a replacement so my wife moved on. Good times while it lasted.

I suppose if you're planning to built an Atom type car, or stuff it in an Omni, then its possibly fun.. I'm thinking an Atom style car with a supercharged 3800 is in my near future. Anyway... I am curious in what you're gonna do with it. High 14s are massively fast and powerful? The Neon guys were super cocky and thought they had the fastest junk on the planet 20 years ago when I was stationed in South Carolina. They cried and made excuses when completely stock 2.73 geared automatic LS1 F bodys gapped them with more than a full second in the 1/8th mile. Guy in my unit had one that he paid a lot of money to make a "Stage 2" and he ran his mouth about racing for money.. before he found out my LS1 ran mid 13s, the 70 GTO ran 12.60s, and the 79 Formula ran 11.40s. I had lots of fun driving around Charleston and the ricer kids thinking Fast and Furious was remotely factual... I saw lots of ricer flybys a couple miles down the road.
@AutomotiveAdventuresWithAustin5 ай бұрын
You aren't very far off with the Omni guess ;) For a 4cyl turbo these little 2.4s have quite a lot of potential, but honestly not building a drag car so some fast and quick and fun that makes turbo noises and is reliable is the goal. And gives modern sensor feedback so I'm not guessing and checking against 80s technology. The word "fast" these days has become interchangeable with "stupid" in a lot of things
@SweatyFatGuy5 ай бұрын

@AutomotiveAdventuresWithAustin I actually have a shelby charger that I been working on a very long term project that I'm putting the srt4 motor backed by the old school fwd a555 tranny
@Brandon-bi2dn5 ай бұрын
@AutomotiveAdventuresWithAustin also if you run the transmission from a dodge daytona or whatever...a520 a555 even an a568 you can retain the stock hubs from the charger and don't need to steal the hubs from the cruiser. Also if you do the old school fwd dodge tranny you wont need to worry about hydraulic clutch setup. Can use the clutch from a 80s turbo dodge and parts store axles and then do the standalone engine management

The Neon wasn't that bad of a car, it was the media blowing things out of proportion like they always do. I had a 95 or a 97 Neon coupe with a stick and i loved that car. The SRT4 neon was a nasty car and so much fun to drive. My dad almost bought one off the showroom floor in 04/05 at Spitzer Dodge. It was burnt orange and beautiful. For people who don't know, they had Viper seats in them. Trying to find a clean unmolested SRT4 neon is near impossible. Now the PT was a cool car, my mom had a NA manual one. It was fun. BUT working on them is a pain in the dick to put it lightly
