People say transit is slow but it was only 6 mins slower than driving... that’s actually pretty damn good. If you took into account that you often have to look for parking when you drive, transit might even be faster. That being said, the speed of transit really depends on where you are & where you’re going. This is actually a really interesting video; i’d like to see a bunch of trials done in different areas of the city to get a better idea of what’s the best option.
@seraphina9855 жыл бұрын
Yup I know with all the youtube videos where they do similar things in London the parking problem usually makes the car even worse still both in terms of time and price as parking is rather a sellers market in London. Basically anything else (Bike, Tube, DLR, Overground, Bus etc) even taxis as you don't have to try and find somewhere to dump the thing on arrival beats the car convincingly on both measures.
@Lafv5 жыл бұрын
Seraphina S yeah European cities tend to have super efficient transit. LA was kind of built around the car though, so i’m impressed that transit was only a few minutes slower than the car. I live in a much smaller Canadian city and it takes twice as long to get anywhere on a bus (because we don’t have any rapid transit)
@fermitupoupon17545 жыл бұрын
@@Lafv Even in european cities the fastest way to get around is usually a moped. As those are usually allowed to use bicycle infrastructure, so you can bypass the worst traffic jams entirely and they can keep up with cars within city limits because of the speed limit. I used to commute by moped because it took all of 8 minutes to get from home to work, where it'd take upwards of 40 by car due to traffic. These days I commute on a maxiscooter, so I can't take those shortcuts anymore. But being able to filter through traffic (lane splitting is not legal here, only filtering is) it's still a 12 minute commute because I have to take a longer route. I mean I can physically fit my maxiscooter through the shortcuts, it's just not legal to do so. And no matter how good public transit is, it never leaves from where you are and it doesn't arrive where you need to be, nor does it take the most efficient route between the two.
@Lafv5 жыл бұрын
William Loudermilk I know, I’ve heard of that before. It happened in a lot of cities, including where I live. I did something like this in Chile a year ago: 40 minutes for buses, 55 minutes for bikes, and 30 minutes for cars in a 8.8km conmute. But every vehicle has its downsides. With buses you need to know where you are going or you'll get lost (almost all buses are blue) and they can get very crowed. With cars you'll spend more money in maintenance, fuel and parking; and you need a safe place to leave it. Bikes need to be locked if you leave it alone, and you have to drive with caution to avoid being the crashed one.

I loved this. I think the takeaway should be to use a hybrid of the transportation methods as opposed to driving everywhere. I learned this in high school when I started driving. I lived pretty close to the school (5 miles one way) and traffic right after school would be horrendous, so I just started walking home after school let out if I didn't want to catch the bus and stay after school later. The only time I really drove to school was on Fridays since I could go elsewhere when it let out. I still do this in adulthood since I live walking distance from work. That was an underrated benefit of the pandemic. It let people work from home and commute less. Which really changes the life you live for the better. Lol.

Before watching the video: I bet trains win. From experience living in NYC- trains are the best way to go, as long as they're frequent enough. Edit: Raghav just about matched the time without breaking a sweat. With some actual hustle, he would've totally won. I agree the train won. You counted the time he had to walk to and from the stations, plus he wasn't in much of a rush walking. It's also, the most economical. Dude in car probably burned at least $5 in gas (one way), wear and tear, cost of driving the car, insurance, parking, etc. Biking is really not much of an option considering the distance, and for many not practical or it's not physically possible. Biking in urban L.A. also is probably the most dangerous.
