What makes the video of the street scene especially interesting is the multiple layers of activity all happening simultaneously. There is the cameraman and film crew in the foreground, pedestrians on both sides of the street, two lanes of horse-drawn carriages and in the background an actress entering a house.

To think I used to frequent that very same street all the time when my friend owned an apartment in the building on the corner of washington park...To see this re-enactment in real time brings tears to my eye. Being a Troy native all my life I wish I had been around to see the filming so I could have brought out my irish tin whistle top hat and violin ahah...

Episode 4: This episode uses Washington Park, Troy, NY to represent Fort Green, a wealthy black neighborhood in Brooklyn, NY where Peggy's parents, Arthur and Dorothy Scott live. Peggy’s dad owns a pharmacy and her mother is active in neighborhood affairs. They have Black domestic workers. In the 1880’s Fort Greene was where the Black middle and upper-class New Yorkers lived. This is why there are so many black actors in my video.

Thanks for clarifying this. It was noticeable that the look and the characters did not reflect the Upper East Side New York City of the time. I also recognized it as the Brooklyn scene from the show.

Episode 6: It was delightful to see several scenes shot in downtown Troy - Monument Square, elegant houses on 2nd St. and Paine Castle. Scenes shot on the streets in downtown Troy have a more realistic feel to them than scenes shot on the Long Island film set. An effort is underway to preserve and protect the historic Paine Castle for future generations. This 125-year old mansion, located at 49 Second St. in downtown Troy, has seen a lot since it was built in 1896 as the “Grandest House in Troy.” A Gilded Age masterpiece, it has served as a private residence, a college administrative building, a movie set and most recently a fraternity house for the Alpha Tau chapter of Pi Kappa Phi at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. www.troyrecord.com/2021/08/23/effort-underway-to-preserve-historic-paine-castle/ The Painecastle web site - www.painecastle.com/ - includes a pretty amazing virtual tour of the building and a video - Ode to the Butler - kzbin.info/www/bejne/rnXFcqWLaJWmeLc - with three dancing ballerinas and a butler.

Beaux Arts style gets attention on HBO (see 15 photos in AP article below). Just as Fellowes began work on “The Gilded Age” several years ago after his hit “Downton Abbey,” the architect, author and educator Phillip James Dodd began his passion project about the same era. His “An American Renaissance: Beaux-Arts Architecture in New York City” (Images Publishing) is a massive, meticulous book delving into the homes, monuments and public buildings that robber barons and industrialists ordered up in an over-the-top vein as the city gained its cultural footing. The Beaux Arts style, characterized by classical forms, massive proportions and lavish, usually symmetrical, detailing, sprouted from the École des Beaux Arts in Paris. Some of the most sought-after American architects trained there before joining the gold rush for commissions amid New York’s sea of brownstones. apnews.com/article/business-europe-new-york-city-nathan-lane-arts-and-entertainment-61b36f1ce45fadf95d6013e1fb0f70f6

'The Gilded Age' sets up for 2nd season of filming in Troy, Albany, Cohoes Kenneth C. Crowe II, Albany Times Union, June 18, 2022 www.timesunion.com/news/article/The-Gilded-Age-sets-up-for-second-season-of-17249675.php Racks of costumes for filming HBO’s “The Gilded Age” are filling up the Troy Atrium again - and the production of the hit Julian Fellowes series is moving out from Troy to include Albany and Cohoes. While schedules and locations aren’t completely set for Albany, Cohoes and Troy, the production is expected to be setting up and filming for three months this summer. Scenes are expected to be shot from Aug. 1 to 26. “We’re excited,” said David Bryce, owner of the Troy Atrium at Broadway and Third Street in Troy where HeyDay Productions LLC has begun setting up and contractors are in and out of the building. This spot was the center of costuming and prepping the extras in 19th-century period clothing for filming, The production will work out of the atrium from June 13 to Sept. 2. Filming is anticipated to begin in August at several locations in Albany and Cohoes for the first time. In Troy, familiar locations such as the former Illium Café on Monument Square and homes around Washington Park will again appear in the show. Fellowes, who created the popular “Downton Abbey” series, is the creator and writer of “The Gilded Age.” Both dramatic series emphasize their historic authenticity. “The Gilded Age” is set in late 19th-century New York, several decades before the action of “Downton Abbey,” which opened with news of the sinking of the Titanic in 1912 and portrayed the lives of British aristocrats through the late 1920s. The First Presbyterian Church at Willett and State streets in Albany will see filming in August, said Jamie Mamone, the church administrator, on Friday. Mamone said dates are being firmed up and that she’s looking forward to seeing the period costumes and horses and carriages. The church is on the east side of Washington Park, which has often been the site of movie and television productions. Grant Wilfley Casting began advertising this week for extras to work on the second season at sites around the region. The company was the source for extras who worked on the first season of filming in Troy.

What Happened to the Gilded Age Mansions of New York City? The palatial and ornate Manhattan homes depicted on the hit HBO series ‘The Gilded Age’ once existed, but almost all have been demolished. HBO’s hit series “The Gilded Age,” set in 1880s Manhattan, was filmed at a number of historic mansions dating back to the famously ostentatious era. But most are located in Newport, R.I., or Troy, N.Y., according to an HBO spokeswoman-virtually no filming took place in Manhattan. Why? Because the palatial Gilded Age mansions of New York City have almost completely vanished. Starting around 1880, New Yorkers built some of the largest and most elaborate houses the country had ever seen. On Fifth Avenue, Riverside Drive and elsewhere in the city stood free-standing homes modeled after European palaces, some with more than 100 rooms and spanning entire city blocks. Yet within a few decades, virtually all of these massive houses had been demolished. “These amazing mansions that were built along Fifth Avenue-many of them have been destroyed,” said Helen Zoe Veit, an associate history professor at Michigan State who is a historical consultant for the HBO show. In the 1880s and ‘90s, the city’s most desirable residential neighborhood was Vanderbilt Row, a stretch of mansions on Fifth Avenue between 50th Street and the southeast corner of Central Park. Today the area is a frenzied commercial district of office buildings and retail stores, with virtually no trace of the posh single-family homes that once stood there. www.wsj.com/articles/what-happened-to-the-gilded-age-mansions-of-new-york-city-11647534089

It humors me when people say "we don't save anything old any more these days". Actually we do more now than ever before. Many people are indeed concerned about saving historic buildings. And unlike in the past, we now have the National Register of Historic Places, which prevents those buildings from being torn down. They can't even be changed, unless it has been permitted after a stringent review.

Troy tours highlight 'The Gilded Age' as second season sites scouted, Kenneth C. Crowe II, Times Union, May 5, 2022. TROY - Location scouts for HBO’s “The Gilded Age” have scoured city rooftops seeking a perch to re-create crowds watching the opening of the Brooklyn Bridge as the city prepares for the filming of scenes for season two in August. Washington Park stood in for New York City’s Madison Square Park in 1882 when the Statue of Liberty’s torch was re-created for the premiere season of “The Gilded Age” using a combination of a wooden base and computer-generated graphics. Now it appears, the opening of the Brooklyn Bridge on May 24, 1883, will provide another historic anchor for Julian Fellowes’ 19th-century dramatic series. www.timesunion.com/news/article/Troy-walking-tours-feature-The-Gilded-Age-as-17148418.php

'The Gilded Age' finds 19th century authenticity in Cohoes' mills and theater Kenneth C. Crowe II, Albany Times Union, June 21, 2022 www.timesunion.com/news/article/The-Gilded-Age-finds-19th-century-authenticity-17256068.php COHOES - When Season Two of HBO’s “The Gilded Age” debuts, the audience will see the Harmony Mills complex standing in for Pittsburgh and scenes from a play performed on the Cohoes Music Hall stage. Executive Producer David Crockett described in an interview how the series set in 19th century New York City is expanding its storylines and its cast of characters leading the show, to break out of its Troy base from the first season to take advantage of settings in Albany and Cohoes. “We like Troy so much, but we’re hoping to see some new areas. Our story expands for a second season. We need new locations and different things to see. We’re working our way around,” Crockett said. Just as the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall stood in for a concert hall in New York City, the Cohoes Music Hall, which opened in 1874, will provide the performance space for a play. “We have a theater scene that we will be shooting there,” Crockett said. The crews will film portions of a play that will be performed in the Music Hall, which is in the upper stories of a bank building. “The Gilded Age,” with its nine episodes set in 1882, was created and written by Julian Fellowes, who also was the creative force behind the “Downton Abbey” series set in Great Britain. While “The Gilded Age” takes place in late 19th century New York depicting the lives of society’s upper crust, “Downtown Abbey” occurs several decades later in the 20th century portraying the lives of British aristocrats. During the 2021 filming in Troy, Fellowes kept an eye remotely on the production from Great Britain. When filming starts locally in August, Fellowes may appear in the Capital Region for a few days to visit the sets, Crockett said. “He’s trying to figure out his schedule. He’s made a point to say he really, really wants to try to come after seeing so much of it on film,” Crockett said. Fellowes’ work demands historic authenticity. Troy in the first season gave that feeling in creating Gilded Age Manhattan and Brooklyn. Crockett said he marveled at the depth Troy’s surviving 19th century streetscape gave the production without having to rely on massive use of computer generated graphics. While production crews are slowly arriving in Troy to begin preparations, the series will film about one-third of its scenes each in Troy, Cohoes and Albany, Crockett said. Harmony Mills, which straddles either side of North Mohawk Street, will stand in for the Pittsburgh mills that tycoon George Russell, portrayed by Morgan Spector, owns in Pittsburgh. Harmony Mills, now home to apartments and lofts, was at one time the largest cotton mill complex in the world after it was built in the late 19th century. The production also is looking at streets in Cohoes for exteriors. Cataract and School streets, which are lined with housing for the original mill workers were scoped out last year. “The Gilded Age” has picked some of the city’s “gems” to film and it shows that Cohoes’ plans to preserve and enhance its historic buildings are paying off, Mayor William Keeler said. In Albany, the First Presbyterian Church at Willett and State streets will be used for a church scene as may other churches in the city. Albany’s Washington Park will stand in for scenes set in Central Park in New York, Crockett said. Location scouts and the production team took a long look at using the Oklahoma Track in Saratoga Springs, but it won’t be filmed this year, Crockett said. It may later on if the series continues to be renewed. “Everything that we do is really looking for pieces of the puzzle,” Crockett said. That’s what’s occurring with the depiction of the opening of the Brooklyn Bridge. While Troy’s widow’s walks and upper stories were studied, it appears that it will be a welding of local appearances and computer graphics to catch the flavor of the hoopla surrounding the bridge linking Brooklyn to Manhattan. “Everybody had a great time up here last year. It’s an enjoyable place to spend time. It’s an enjoyable place to film,” Crockett said about the region.

The real story of Ward McAllister, Nathan Lane's character. Ward McAllister spent an entire inheritance on a single outfit so the city’s richest would assume he was one of them. “Be sure to make it a success,” says Aurora Fane (Kelli O’Hara) to Bertha Russell (Carrie Coon) in the sixth episode of HBO’s The Gilded Age. “He won’t give you a second chance.” Ward McAllister, the social arbiter of New York high society, has asked the nouveau-riche Russells for a luncheon. McAllister, played by a mustachioed Nathan Lane, sweeps into the Russells’ home and appraises their (borrowed) butler: “An English butler! That’s a good start!” slate.com/culture/2022/02/gilded-age-hbo-nathan-lane-ward-mcallister.html

Gardens of the Gilded Age in 40 Glorious Images. Frances “Fannie” Benjamin Johnston, a pioneering female photographer from Grafton, West Virginia, was given her first camera by George Eastman, founder of Eastman Kodak Company. Well connected among the elites of society, from the late 1800s through 1935, she photographed the gardens of the rich and famous. To the wealthy and class-conscious, gardens signified status and refinement in an ever growing industrialized America. Francis Benjamin Johnston played a significant role in defining American landscape design. Here are 40 glorious gardens from the Gilded Age, including ‘The Breakers,’ Cornelius Vanderbilt II house in Newport, Rhode Island. So amazing that these were taken before color photography, and were hand colored. fiveminutehistory.com/gardens-of-the-gilded-age/ fiveminutehistory.com/gardens-of-the-gilded-age/2/

The casting is correct given the location, Fort Green, a wealthy black neighborhood in Brooklyn, NY where Peggy's parents, Arthur and Dorothy Scott live. Peggy’s dad owns a pharmacy and her mother is active in neighborhood affairs. They have Black domestic workers. In the 1880’s Fort Greene was where the Black middle and upper-class New Yorkers lived. This is why there are so many black actors in my video.

The Magic Is In the Details - In his article in the Albany Times Union newspaper on the Capital Region's vibrant TV and film industry, ( www.timesunion.com/movies/article/Past-present-and-future-all-part-of-a-booming-16254775.php), C.J. Lais Jr. did a great job of highlighting the attention to detail that characterized filming of The Gilded Age TV series in Troy. Close attention to period details can magically transport a viewer back in time. The Gilded Age film crew covered streets with a thick layer of dirt and returned downtown shop windows to a richly detailed 1880’s vibe. They filmed intact Victorian streetscapes and for one scene, modified the façade of Troy’s Victorian-era library by removing metal signs and frosting the glass lenses of two lanterns so they looked more period-appropriate.Towards the end of their stint in Troy, the film crew set up an elaborate scene opposite Washington Park. Using facades of stately Victorian homes as a backdrop, they choreographed a parade of horse-drawn carriages and 19th century strollers. When the cameras briefly stopped rolling, crew members fixed actors’ hair, smoothed out the folds of fancy skirts and spread sand around the base of a temporarily placed lamppost to make it blend in. (I was delighted to have the opportunity to shoot some video that day.) When we see the final product, I suspect that this attention to detail will just about convince us that what we're viewing is not a scene shot in Troy in the present but a real-life scene in Manhattan 140 years ago.
