Thank you for these videos. I cant express my gratefulness for the knowledge that you share among everyone. I will be trying to make some records over the summer, I know someone who might be able to find me an appropriate pressure chamber to hopefully get fully functional copies.

You can build a hand pumped vacuum chamber from PVC and you'd be surprised how far down you can get it just by hand.

That was a fun little record! The original record was a paper coated shellac one, I have a few of those, so this sounds typical of them.

Don Wilson I saw a video of a table made with a 2 part clear epoxy and the bubbles were removed by aiming a torch at the surface and moving the torch in a quick circular motion.

Just for the sake of saying so, did you think of playing for us the original disc. I'm curious to know if all that NOISE was in the original old disc, or was it those air bubbles after all? Nice try, though!

Don! Thank You so much for these video`s! I am going to try this with Disc, And Cylinder Records! I have some AWESOME EDISON Amberol Records! But these early 4 minute Records are just way too brittle, And You can actually see them being striped when played, Even with a new stylus on a model H Reproducer! I LOVE Someone who will share their knowledge, And this makes You a very special Person indeed!

Is there not a 3D printer that can print small/ fine enough grooves yet? Would love to scan a record into a scanner to input the grooves, then 3D print it as a little disc. PS, do you think it would be possible to cut a goove direct into the blank side of that resin mold once it sets? Like to make blank discs for a GAKKEN TOY RECORD MAKER, or any vinyl cutting machine? Great idea by the way, defo got me thinking to try this! Thanks

Hi. The best advertised resolution of a 3D printer is 25 microns, or 0.001". This by itself is not high enough resolution to make a record. Since 25 microns is the advertised resolution, the actual resolution is probably much lower. They'll certainly get better, but they have a long way to go until they can match silicone.

@@DonWilsonLabs Thanks Don , such a shame as I keen to get started now, but I guess the future will be great for these things!! ;)

Question. What happens when you play the mold, does it play backwards inside out?

Was the record you copied about that noisy?

Does the original suffer from the problems this disc has? How did the record end up off set?
@DonWilsonLabs5 жыл бұрын
The mold has a male "nub" where the spindle hole was on the original, so the copy has a spindle hole in the same place as the original. The copy is thicker, so it has to be drilled. I do this step on a drill press so it's very close to the same placement as the original. Compounding the problem, is that the disc is so small that the cartridge is not centered parallel to the grooves.
