I did this myself, yesterday, on my MS 261. I run the tension sprocket all the way back before reinstalling the bar & chain so there is plenty of play. Then, with the housing on I check the chain tightness, and lastly the break, seeing free running chain with the break off and the break locking the chain when it's on. Thanks for letting me know I'm not a solitary dodo. I appreciate your calm, thoughtfull delivery. DOUG out

Good info Donny. In addition to this, I also have people bring saws to me where the chain is hanging 1/2" below the bar, because they think that is tight enough. Then there are the ones who never knew to flip their bar each chain change to keep even wear. When I give the saw back with the bar upside down, they think I put it together wrong.

The tension I was taught is that it should hold itself tight against the bar - not sagging away from it - and while you should be able to pull the chain away from the bar a little, it should be difficult or impossible to pull it away far enough that the entire drive link comes out of the groove in the bar. And of course it should snap back on when you let go.

They key is to rotate the chain on the bar after you install it on the bar. I take a folded up shop towel and rotate the chain from the engine to the sprocket nose. That little .043 drag just loves to drop into the crack between the sprocket washer and the sprocket. .050 or larger drags do not experience this problem, just that .043 chain.
@johnclarke6647 Жыл бұрын
To me rimless sprockets are the hardest sprockets to get the chain on the sprocket properly. The drags have to go in the slots on the sprocket. The other worst Stihl saw to get the chain properly installed on the sprocket are those saws with .043 drags, like the ms170, 171, 180, 181, etc. after I install a chain, I rotate it on the bar by hand several times to make sure it is locked into the sprocket and track, correctly. If it will not rotate, I start over and do it right the second time.
@benjaminleslie3155 Жыл бұрын
And this is *ONE* of the reasons why rim sprockets are so much more superior.

If you could use a pencil or laser pointer it would make the video easier to follow. Your black glove made the description of the problem difficult to see where the issue was. Your videos have been a wonderful way for me to learn about small engines. I grew up in Montreal and now live in Wisconsin. Plenty of snow in both places and with your help I have been able to make some repairs to my snowblowers and lawn mowers.

@kenbrown2808 Жыл бұрын
can't say I've ever seen that problem. the one I'm more accustomed to is people running too loose a chain and throwing it frequently, and having the drive fins all beat up so it jams in the groove.
@Mechanicturfgear Жыл бұрын
I know what I’m doing and yes it’s so easy to install it incorrectly I’ve done it a few times lol . Also the reason for pulling up on bar when adjusting it is because it’s imitating the down / push pressure when cutting .
@scottfirman Жыл бұрын
I think being in a hurry to get the thing back together is part of the problem. I ALWAYS check to be sure the chain is over the sprocket and I hand pull the chain to be sure it didn't slip off before even think about starting the saw. I have been working on them for so long I guess it became automatic from the start to hand pull the chain each time. I may have had a binding issue from the chain slipping off and recognized the issue up front and made a mental note to always check that. I have had several guys bring me their saw with the brake set, wondering why it wouldn't work right and the chain being on wrong. I guess I have seen it all at this point in time.

I wonder if it’s possible to install a washer under the “c” clip to keep the large washer tight against the sprocket?
@FreedomandBaconHomestead Жыл бұрын
Totally happened to me!
@johnclarke6647 Жыл бұрын
I forgot to add - the first thing I do before I crank up a saw is rotate the chain on the bar. To do this, I fold a shop towel into quarters and use it to rotate the chain a few licks. If it does not feel right, I pull the sprocket cover off and check it out. I then adjust the tension and replace the sprocket cover. Then, I crank the saw. A well worn chain and sprocket if properly tensioned should rotate like glass on the bar. New bars and chain rotate a little tight on the bar, as do new sprockets, especially rimless sprockets.
@kenbrown2808 Жыл бұрын
I just grab the sides and tug. it tells me the chain is free, and oiling properly.

I have this Problem and AS soon AS i try to Cut Wood my chainsaw Stop and never again start? What is your Idea??
@johnclarke6647 Жыл бұрын
@@salmanyazdanpanah3655 if it stops when you try to cut wood, sounds like a carb problem to me. Check to see if the chain will rotate on the bar. If not, the chain break could be on or you don’t have the chain on properly. A real problem with small saws with spur sprockets is the chain can get caught in the gap between the sprocket washer and the sprocket, especially with .043 gauge chains on Stihl saws. This can even happen on rimless sprockets if the drags are not in the slots on the rimless sprocket. What model saw do you have?
@bevis226 Жыл бұрын
Another thing that I have seen is someone put the chain on backwards. Once you start the saw and try to cut with it you can break the crankshaft. The drivers on a chain act like a ramp or a wedge if you put them on backwards. When you try to cut with it the chain tightens up extremely tight. If it doesn't wreck the nose of the bar or snap the chain it can break the crankshaft.
@kittytrail Жыл бұрын

Don i like to run my chain so it sags off the bottom of the bar a bit. Which is looser than you do. I think it puts less drag on the chain so produces more chain speed and less wear on bearings. What is the problem with this?

Why would you mount the bar with the saw sitting on its side. The weight if the bar pulls the inboard end away from the sprocket creating the issue you are talking about. Puting the bar on with the saw sitting on the bottom keeps that from happening.

I can honestly say that I've never made that mistake and I never will. I knew that since I was a kid, make sure a chain is on a sprocket proper and make sure things line up. I could only imagine taking an expensive piece of equipment to a professional, only to find out that the chain is jammed. How many people would even really check first? I mean you're trusting somebody to do something right. Somebody would run their equipment only to have a burn up or just die completely. The shop would only say that it's the customers fault.
