Denise SEVIER-FRIES yep nowadays they are a cabal. The same handful of people write the songs and are seeking a certain look. Technology will fill in the blanks. That’s popular music in this age. @@danapaul3216 so true friend. Good heartfelt singers nowadays are few and far between. Its all about flashing lights pyrotechnics fire and booms . True singers can still be found in the folk and blues songs .. I live in Wyoming now and have for over 30 years , born in the Mississippi delta . Im a white man raised up listening to delta blues and southern bluegrass. I call it my roots my heritage. Actually they did have a type of autotune back then. At least for studio albums. It is a very old trick of studio engineers. They would record multiple vocal tracks and overlap them to smooth out sour notes. It's still done today.

A little Michael trivia. In 1974, McDonald became a member of Steely Dan's touring band, singing lead and backing vocals. He also became one of the many in-studio adjunct members of the band, providing backing vocals on tracks for 1975's Katy Lied. He appeared on subsequent Steely Dan recordings including 1976's The Royal Scam and 1977's Aja. He also played keyboards on some Steely Dan tracks. McDonald continued to provide backing vocals for Steely Dan through their 1980 release, Gaucho. In 2006, he joined Steely Dan on the band's summer tour, both as the opening act and as part of the band.

I still say he needs to react to The Doctor, their first single after the return of Tom Johnston

Jamel: you have saved me over these past several months!! Watching your reactions to the greasiest music ever made brings me back to the first time I heard these songs. Your joy and enthusiasm makes me smile each time I watch a post. I can’t thank you enough!! Please keep them coming!!

I think today, music executives are more concerned with physical appearance than musical ability. With all the technology, they can make anyone sound good, but they can't make anyone look good. This is also my favorite era of music. It's all so original and authentic. It comes from the heart, not a machine. There a few artists today that transcend, but not many.

That intro he plays sounded like the intro to “Minute by Minute”. Auto-tune ruined music. Everybody sounds good using A-tune. Therefore, the music industry didn’t have to find real talent like Michael McDonald and the Doobie Brothers. That’s why most of today’s popular music sounds like crap.

I agree.

Compared to the real deal, autotune sucks. Then, real talent was required.

I love your reference too a old soul.Young people have old souls. They can see things and feel things. U gotta live ur life, no ones going anywhere. Appreciate all the good vibes u spread. And the positivity. Have a great day.

Let's not forget that a lot of these auto tune performers use a ton of backing tracks live as well. Remember when Milli Vanilli was a scandal? By today's standards, that was tame. Business as usual even.

That is why I love Grace Vanderwaal, the 12 year old(Now 16) who won America's Got Talent....she writes her own music and refuses to lip sync or use auto tune....she is special and I hope Jamal will listen to some of her stuff some day. Check out her channel. It has stuff from the AGT show up to her newest....some really good stuff there in her latest EP album kzbin.info/door/2qc1KM4zgRoOpysqVEaNbw

GOD his voice is SO beautiful!! I can't figure out what makes his voice so unique, but I think it may be because he can somehow sing with power, yet with a breathiness that makes it feel not only srong, but 'warm and fuzzy' at the same time -- Ya know? This may be the first time I've seen him sing live when he was with the Doobies -- He looks younger here than I've ever seen him. Great song too!

And he has deep dimples! Mike doesn’t sing falsetto. Those high notes are chest and head tones! That’s why he sounds so unique.

Seeing the Doobies live was the best. The most integrated audience, just there to celebrate together. What a great time to grow up. I do like the more deliberate pace of the studio version, but MM really delivers the goods here as well! Thank you, old soul.

One of my favorites by Michael McDonald is "I keep forgetting, We're not in love anymore". Soo good!

I was 18 in 1972. I love reliving the music that I cherished through your perspective. Rock, pop, funk, blues, my generation was surrounded and spoiled for choice with such incredible music. And, as you point out, no auto-tune.

Thank you for your breakdown of this song and your heartfelt feelings about this music. The comparison to the today’s music to the virtuosity of the 1970s music really warms my heart that you understand the difference between the decades. Thanks sweetie !

I was born in 1966 so I was blessed to be growing up and listening to the music of the 70's and 80's. It was a magical time and won't be duplicated!

Hey Jamal, I really appreciate what you are doing and why you're doing it. I'm 66 and love listening to all these great songs along with you. Many of them I haven't heard since the seventies. And some are completely new to me. So thank you for doing what you're doing. Keeping the music alive. Peace.

You can’t go this far down the Doobie Brothers rabbit hole without reacting to the TV Show “What’s Happening” - What's Happening S2 E16 Doobie Or Not Doobie - Its generational time stamp moment that so many of the 45 and older crowd remember.
