@fostermac71705 жыл бұрын
@Over Under Sideways Down I do for one. Written by the great HollandDozierHolland production team at Motown, and initially recorded by Kim Weston singer and wife of William 'Mickey' Stevenson. Mickey Stevenson was the label's first head of A & R, and along with Smokey Robinson was chiefly responsible for the rise to excellence the label enjoyed. Motown was without a doubt the most consequential music factory in history. Influenced most genres for generations to come. By the way the vocal arranging (with Patrick Simmons shining through) had Motown written all over it. Mike McDonald can bring a 'blue-eyed soul' vibe to his work, but Tom Johnston has the pipes to absolutely blow in the up tempo stuff. All of these Northern Calif type guys bring a lot to the music game. Forerunners to 'Ambrosia, etc. R & B writers can write for these guys all day.
@axslinger995 жыл бұрын
@@lindabergman3127 You're not suggesting this is Burton Cummings, are you? Because it's not. It's Tom Johnston. Yes, there's a resemblance but other than some solo work, Tom hasn't been in any other mainstream bands.

Everything is fucking perfect: arrangements, harmonies, solos, rythm section, e-ve-ry-th-ing (i only miss the original orchestra a little bit). And Tom's voice has America's greatest music history wrapped within itself. And as a Motown junkie myself, all I can say is THANK YOU for this bloody great versh. I would have sacrificed a finger for the opportunity to see the Doobies perform live. Unfortunately I never got the chance. But isn't it what the internet is for?..

There just isn't a better rock and roll tune than this in the whole catalogue - kicking 12 bar with a great middle 8. The great Kim Weston as well as the Isley Brothers have done great versions of this as well and I can imagine so many singers doing equally fantastic versions. In fact I can't really imagine anyone doing a bad version. This is the best so far though and Tom Johnson is right up there with the greats as far as I'm concerned. I could listen to this number for ever!

One of my favorite songs from my HS school years. I’m thinking early 1975. But….I’m presently hovering over age 63. My blond hair has abandoned ship and I’m almost pure cotton top now (all that that implies) so with that said, it could have been 1976 or late 1974, but for some reason, I feel this song hit the airwaves during the Spring semester of my Sophomore year in HS, which was 1975. I think.

How bow. I had a Soundesign system. Not great, but not all that bad.. all I could afford, Kept my pot in a baggie we called “a lid” in the 8 track portion, beneath the turntable, next to the tuner, I knew my mother WOULD NEVER look in there Life was so simple then. I miss Is the simplicity. Sigh.

I have the sinking feeling they were playing at some sort of corporate gig - check out all the dudes in the office outfits in the front rows. They Doobies will forever be far more that and listening to them today reminds me of the first discovery of the doobies and the overwhelming love and joy I still feel
