Those red berries were also in my primary school ( wales ). It was kinda weird though because it was a huge tree/ bush canopy thing and for some reason everybody called it the love tree. If you were pushed into the love tree you HAD to become a couple

We had these like fuzzy triangular clumps of almost teeny like berry things... I don't know what they were. But I actually ate them as a kid. I don't know if I should have, but they tasted kind of like a super sour raspberry. I liked them. I had heard a rumor that if they grow pointing up, you can eat them, and pointing down, they are poisonous. But then I never saw ones that pointed down, and as an adult I now realize how stupid I was to have eaten the things lol.

This makes me so curious to know what they were! I had "school berries" at my preschool, and the teachers were very vigilant about keeping all of the three- and four-year-olds from eating the berries of these Yew bushes. After researching, apparently the fruit is safe, but the seed and the rest of the bush is toxic. Now I kind of wish I had tasted the fruit. :D

I'm from the US but I also remember "school berries". I think they grew on a bush that was commonly used as a privacy shrub, I'm guessing thats why they were found at so many schools.

Yes!! I moved schools multiple times too and I knew those plastic-like school berries. I remember being told that only a certain type of bird eats them. (I’m from Northern Virginia in the US btw) we also had the stories about the giant crocodile/ alligator living in the drainage pipes, I’d always buy a “uncrustables” from lunch everyday before recess and sit next to the drainage grate, throwing half my sandwich down to it because I thought it was lonely and hungry. It still confuses me how every half of my uncrustable would completely disappear by the next day.

1) I love guinea pigs. 2) Your mention of "school berries" gave me an instant flashback to my midwestern USA preschool, which had bushes with bright red squishy berries that had a single hard dark seed in them. As I was contemplating my mental image, I realized that the needles of the bush looked like a Yew plant. I looked it up, and yes, Yews have berries (which is odd, because none of the ones I've ever seen since then have ever had berries...) A 27 year-old mystery SOLVED, thanks you guys! 0.0 Yay!
