Might be worthwhile easing off on the mixture settings once the flaps are up - you are burning fuel for not much benefit (but not too much otherwise you will lose power) - just keep an eye on airspeed in level flight, with a constant throttle position. Ease the mixture knob towards lean until you just start to see a slight airspeed reduction, and that's fine. In the "Real World" that'll reduce engine wear / carbonisation and give you extra range per 100 gallons.
@Doofer9118 жыл бұрын
I completely agree however the intent with my first 4 or 5 videos was to get COMPLETE beginners up into the air so I didn't want them worrying about things like Fuel Mixture. The default planes in FSX are very forgiving so you can throw them about without much consequence.

Doofer911 Fully agree with your intentions - and as said before you do an excellent job. @phils46348 жыл бұрын
The full name "Propeller Factor" gives it away. Although the prop. "disk" is symmetrical, there is a slight thrust difference between the port and starboard sides - this happens in the "real world" with real aircraft too, and is obviously a speed effect. I don't know if simulation packages have rudder trim, but that's how you fix the problem. Alternatively invest in a nice modern aircraft with a constant speed, variable pitch prop which goes a very long way to eliminate this particular hassle :-)

@ 7:55 - 8:46 I know you mentioned how you have the trim controls mapped to a couple of buttons on your joystick, but what if you still do not have a joystick/yoke made for flight sim. I constantly have trouble whenever I cruise, because I do not have a joystick/yoke. I have to use a mouse; and when I try to uncheck the 'Mouse Yoke' option I can't keep it at a level cruise because the plane either pitches too high up or too down. So, I wish I could adjust the trim automatically, but I do not have the flight simulator equipment to. Is there a solution to this? Thanks for reading and have a nice day. (P.S. I am already up to the Air Traffic Control tutorial in the series, but I went back on this video to add this little comment.)

Not sure, you might have to raise it on Carenado's forums to see if anyone else has had the same issues. If it's not happening with any other planes, then you can at least narrow it down to that specific product.

+firdaus kh I don't think it's easy to convert a joystick into a yoke I'm afraid. The mechanics of how a joystick and a yoke work are completely different. A joystick which has a throttle slider/lever and that side to side "twist" is perfect for flying though. A lot of real world planes have joysticks instead of a yoke for controlling the plane. You know that HUGE Airbus A380 plane.... pilots of those use joysticks ;)

+Alan Wu Hi Alan, the simulator I use is "Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition" which you can buy on the Steam website (Steam is like an online store for games). If you don't have that, you can still get the original Flight Simulator X which comes on a CD. It is possible to fly with a mouse and keyboard however you may struggle a little bit controlling the plane like that. I'm not sure where in the world you are but you can get a joystick for as little as £15 and it will make your flying experience much easier and much more fun.
@1chopstix9 жыл бұрын
Thanks Doofer. I am located in Canada. Before I purchase it, I would like to know whether it will only work on one computer after I install onto that one particular computer OR I am able to switch back and forth between computers (laptop and desktop)? I am asking because I am new to Steam and I want to be able to use the simulator with my desktop at home and also use it with my laptop when not at home.
@1chopstix9 жыл бұрын
Also,I dont recall you mentioning the control of carb heat in the video. Do we get to control that in the simulation? Thanks!
@Doofer9119 жыл бұрын
+Alan Wu Yep, the joystick will definitely work on both your laptop and desktop. Best to make sure you get a joystick with a USB connection just to be safe. As for Carb Heat, there are some aircraft in the sim which let you adjust the carb heat, then again I might be confusing that with Cowl Flaps. I think some aircraft in the sim do have extra controls for controlling the temperature of the engine but I'm not sure how accurately modelled this is. As far as I know, the Cessna 172 in FSX is a varient which does not have carb heat, it has direct fuel injection instead.

I meant the "Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition" itself (from Steam website). If i purchase and install it using my desktop, can I use it on my laptop too? Sorry for confusion, Alan

Trying these excellent lessons again after a break from Flight Simming. Got a decent PC now so all good. The problem I have, that I keep having, is with getting the trim set properly. I have followed the instructions, but every time I try to trim for level flight it ends up shooting past 0 on the vsi and puts me either into nose up or nose down. Don't seem to be able to find the sweet spot as easily as you do. I have a Black Widow flight stick with two buttons assigned to trim. Any more suggestions ??. Ps. videos are awesome :)
@Doofer9119 жыл бұрын
+Matthew Hinchliffe Hey Matthew, glad my videos are helping! :) As for the Trim, are you holding down the buttons or tapping them? I usually tap the trim button to make tiny adjustments. In the sim, if you hold it down it will adjust the trim slowly then suddenly speed up if you continue to hold it. So what I do is tap the button and slowly get the trim into the correct position. Hope that helps, if not let me know and I'll see if there's any other tips out there
@DrFantomas19 жыл бұрын
+Doofer911 Yeah, the videos are great, tbh I think I am probably holding the buttons down, I'll try tapping them and see what happens. @Doofer9119 жыл бұрын
+Matthew Hinchliffe Learning to fly it manually is great! Will definitely help you understand how the aircraft behaves when you do certain things so it's worth learning. Seems like a good video and explanation but your volume recording was set too low and can barely hear you at all
@Doofer9119 жыл бұрын
Yeah this was one of my first videos for a long time, my newer vids have better quality :)
@danieltakawi99196 жыл бұрын
you gain speed when you level off because you improve the aerodynamics of the plane, it doesnt have to do with gravity.

That's true, this was one of my earliest videos so my understanding of flight was a little weaker than it is now

No problem! I've found that those are the most common keyboard buttons I used before transferring some of those actions onto joystick buttons.

Are you a pilot
@Doofer9116 жыл бұрын
Nope, just a flight sim enthusiast.

Can you please speak up in your videos? Thanks! (I know I'm 3 years late but whatever)

It doesn't matter how you're late.. I still come back to these videos to learn from them

Tip: IRL, make a checklist.
@Doofer9118 жыл бұрын
No need, planes will have checklists made anyway. No need for a pilot to make one them self.

I thought after takeoff, you trim and pitch for 80 knots

what if i dont have enough money for a joystick
@Doofer9117 жыл бұрын
You can still fly with the keyboard, or save up for one. A basic joystick that will do the job perfectly isn't that expensive.
@dawsome75795 жыл бұрын
"you can find a cheap joystick now a days for around 10$" literally doesn't exist thanks for the false hope
@Doofer9115 жыл бұрын
0:29 - 0:36 "I would strongly recommend getting a joystick to fly with. It makes controlling the plane so much easier and you can pick one up cheap nowadays." ....... Be more accurate if you're going to throw criticism at someone.

Trim is useless..!!
@Doofer91110 жыл бұрын
I beg to differ. During takeoff in a simulator you can't appreciate it as you don't have any real "feeling" or force feedback. In a real plane, with the trim set incorrectly, when you pull back, you'll feel like lifting weights! With the trim set correctly, it's like lifting a bag of sugar, much less effort required making the plane easier to control.
