There is nothing wrong with raytracing per se, it can create stunningly and realistic looking graphics. Sadly a lot of developers think that it looks realistically if water reflects like a liquid mirror of mercury, moist walls look like they are covered in baby oil and to have totally exaggerated lighting everywhere, which kills any sense of realism that raytraycing would have otherwise provided.

These visuals remind me of the mid-2000's when everybody was overdoing the bloom effects. Half of the time the light-bleed looks blurry, like you're in a steamy sauna. This look got old and stigmatized, and is typically viewed as a signature novelty of it's time. But apparently it's cool AF again now, because it's done with RTX, and RTX is the new thing. Until the world catches up and the RTX-craze settles, the people who aren't a fan are "probably just secretly crying over not having RTX capable hardware". Eventually this effect will either get shelved or toned down and used sparingly. It's amusing to watch history repeat itself. That's what I think, since you're asking. 😂

@@TitoffSky88had a fight with someone in another thread after I offered some constructive criticism. The main problem is I think lights need to scatter more. I'm not sure how I feel about it. When trying to enhance older games with very simple visuals there's a fine line between building on older limitions and adding extra guff that overwhelms or clashes with the original art. This mod seems to riding right on that line. Some of the darker areas look fantastic, just the sort of moody atmosphere that you'd imagine for an infested facility with only emergency functions still working. On the other hand the bizzarely reflective water and ugly bloom/fog effect in outdoor areas remind me more of minecraft with too many shaders installed instead of a doom. I'd probably really like a more restrained version of this.

Man. I was around when it came out. I got lucky and a (then) friend bought me a PC to play it on. And still to this day, it looks so good. They got so much right with the game, and it was so revolutionary. It's not hyperbole to state that it was a dream come true, and there was nothing like it at the time (outside of other i.D games like Wolfenstein 3D). And opening it up to modders was such a good idea.

All this effort and the blood is not voxelized...

Bloody Ketchup mod works beautifully with this. You get that extra gory bloody effect that works well with the voxels.

I never vibed with this raytracing hypetrain...

This looks really amazing, love the fact that RTXremix is also included as a bonus but is in kinda rough buggy shape right now, honestly it would be great to have someone adapt their mod to work with this

I'm usually not a purist or anything, and I can enjoy a good remaster with a modernized look, but all the footage i'm seeing here looks gaudy and stupid to me. There are some effects that just don't work with some games. Here, the ray tracing seems to actually be fighting against the game to make it worse. I'ts all a matter of tastes of course, and more power to people who enjoy that stuff, but persponally, I find it misplaced and trashy, and a huge waste of time and effort. I'm pretty sure most people will try if for a session or two, then stop using it altogether once the novelty wears off.

I still feel like ray tracing looks really out of place in Doom 1 & 2, I think in retro/retro inspired games, dynamic lighting has to be more muted, or old school looking for it to feel like it fits, or ideally it should be in retro indie games where the game was built around having dramatic, more realistic lighting while still having retro inspired graphics, a la System Shock Remake or Turbo Overkill. That said though, this looks _way_ better than the Doom 1 ray tracing mod, which to my eye looked like they didn't put a lot of effort into actually lighting the scenes in a way that makes sense, so everything's just really dark all the time. While this mod does look like it has that in a few places like the final boss arena, the lighting in this mod is really dramatic and overall a major improvement, and it fits really well with Voxel Doom 2 and would look really nice with Smooth Doom to make the low frame count weapon sprites look less out of place.

Doom is a great game, but visually this is polishing a turd. Don't get me wrong I like the art of Doom and style. The ultra realism light and reflections conflicts with the art imo.

This looks terrible the bright lights make the environments look like shiny plastic and the bloom combined with the shitty blood effects. Doom II needs a full 3D conversion mod not this

I always preferd the mix of a bit cluttered and well updated enviorments i.e. more detailed spaces and good enough lightinf tricks, sorta like what CS 2 does or what Doom3 did.

The lighting reminds me of Unreal Tournament 3. Including the muzzle flashes. 😩👌

No, just no. I think raytracing combined with those pixelated textures and blocky levels looks off. Everything should be redone accordingly.

Guessing the shadow generation would just end up weird if you had the sprites still there, though It'd be interesting to see.

AKA, Bloooooom. Really guys, when will this ray tracing madness stop? What i'm seeing It basically bloom effects and glassy surfaces. My eyes hurt just looking at it. It's like i'm in a disco.

You can turn off bloom.

If you're "basically" only seeing that your brain is too basic to understand the concept of ray tracing and how it is the future of videogame lighting.
@elkarion2 ай бұрын
@@thedeegee1601 yeah, i'm too basic to understand that ray tracing is the lazy programmers way of adding light/shadows to a game. It's basically a brute force technology that existed ages ago but only now can it be properly used because machines got sufficiently powerful to do that. It's no innovation. In fact, innovation is what developers used to do to get around the issue.
