I remember playing Quake 1 when it released and that engine felt like black magic at the time. It was so unbelievable it creeped me out. Doom 3 felt the same way when it hit. The lighting engine was remarkable and used to such great effect

Much of it comes from the wonky controls when it came out. By the time they fixed the flashlight, people were moving on. Doom3 is a great game and I'd love more games in it's vane. They're gonna have to rebrand it as something else, but I love it. New doom is incredible and you can't compete with it.

It's not like the original, and it cannot compete with the new style, which is incredibly well crafted. Like I said, i do really like the pace and style of doom3 and would have no problem with a rebranding and updated sequel.

I wish they’d make another horror based doom. I can’t think of another game that made me experience legit terror. Your first time going to Hell in Doom 3 is something you’ll never forget. There’s a sense of dread and hopelessness oozing out of the walls around you that seeps into the the soul of the player. There’s nothing like it. I was scared shitless. Literally couldn’t shit for days due to how clenched i was and how the stress effected my digestive system. I had nightmares, but I eventually played more because it dawned on me “no other game has effected me like this. This is a once in a lifetime experience.” The panic attack i had while gunning down a hell knight with a pea-shooter pistol while in a cramped room getting stomped, slashed, a thrown around is forever etched into my memory. I want more of that. Challenge me on an emotional level again please. I want that feeling again. Replaying the same game doesn’t do it anymore.

Thank you, those are my exact feelings! When you get stranded in hell the sense of despair its overwhelming. Also, even though I love the Doom Slayer being just a Marine (who can carry a truck worth of guns and ammo) felt dreadful but little by little you uncover the plot and gist of the game and... Andrés Gómez in every sense of the word. Though you had all the guns and ammo it never felt like enough. You still had to manage your shots and think “ok, this gun is near empty. Let’s see what else i’m carrying.” I’m also a pretty chill dude, so occult stuff doesn’t bother me but it’s how it’s presented that it really becomes unnerving and disturbing. There’s a distinct difference between “normal” satanic shit and Doom 3 satanic shit.

"You are not the Doom slayer, just an average marine" this is basically what I have thought of this game when compared to the other Doom games. You are playing in the perspective of a regular soldier during a demonic invasion. You don't feel powerful as the slayer but rather very vulnerable even against a couple imps, and yet this marine was tough enough to kill countless demons, go to hell and come back alive, and just survive such carnage. Maybe even the Slayer would be impressed by those feats.

Derek Furst There was a weird technological race going on during this time. You had games like F.E.A.R and yes even Half-Life 2 that were pushing technological limits of that era, mostly with physics and lighting. Doom 3 was incredibly hyped by being not only scary but realistic looking, it was the dawn of the "not-a-cutscene" snapshots.

I remember hitting the quick save button every single time after something scary happened... After finishing the game the quick save folder occupied not less than 8 GB which by 2004 standards is even more ridicolous :)))) The flashlight or weapon choice created such tension which no other game was able to give back (at least for me)

I think the whole concept of doom lends itself to a horror experience easily. The story actually provided depth and realism rather than a supersoldier space marine. A new protagonist, so what? It was a REMAKE, of course it will have a new protagonist. So what if it has a slow pace? It fits with the horror tone. You couldn't go on and on because DOOM 3 is an improvement over DOOM 1, 2 and 64. Those 3 games felt like arcade games, DOOM 3 feels like a fully fledged game with a great length to it.

@@necrosteel5013 it's just an example of a shooter of a different era is all. I know everyone says this but it was taking a lot of cues from something like the first half life. As were many others at the time. I just liked the horror atmosphere, the deep lore and story you'd get from PDA logs and videos, and that lighting system is still awesome. Enemy design was hit or miss and difficulty I suppose never hits nightmare mode lol. The BFG edition is way too easy though Like I said though, as much as I love this game, I think it's for the best it's the only one in the series that's like this

Doom 3 felt like the natural evolution of the game to me. Weapon reloading did not feel like a chore or out of place. Not having to reload weapons in Doom 1 and 2, I thought was down to game or engine limitation. Or maybe they just had not thought of it yet. The original Doom games were so early in 3D gaming that it was no surprise that weapons did not need reloading. I don't know of any other games from that era where weapons did need reloading either. Doom 3 was effectively a prequel to Doom 1 and 2 to me, because it explained how it started. Meaning that scene where the scientist said they went through a portal. Meaning, where he said, "Devil is real; I built his cage etc." Doom 3 may have benefitted from slightly more arenas. However I was having a good enough time to not care. …. I wish there was one mod to rule them all, that installed with a one-click executable. Am not so hot at installing mods, but I want to replay Doom 3 with mods.

It wasn't really a prequel it was a reboot, which sucked story wise. Half life made story based horror first person shooters popular and doom tried to jump on the bandwagon and it didn't work. Doom 3 is not what "DOOM" is at its core. Everything done in DOOM1 AND 2 was a purposeful. Doom3 was weighed down with too much convoluted story and cutscenes, reloading isnt a big deal, but it wasn't put in the original games to give the player speed and freedom to fight at full potential without reloading in the way. This "evolution " was very forced and it didn't fit, which is why they never made another one like it

I agree with this. You also have to consider where gaming was in 2004. Back then, it was all about realism where today it's about sticking to a formula, which Doom 2016 and Eternal do well. I think Doom 3 did for Doom what Return to Castle Wolfenstein did for Wolfenstein 3D. It was a more realistic take on it, but being more realistic resulted in a very different style game compared to their DOS-based predecessors.

It's funny because my two favorite Doom games are the two that get the most shit talked about them lol (Doom 3 and Doom 64). And I think the extra layers of horror and dark atmosphere is exactly why I loved these two games. Yes I missed the heavy metal soundtrack, though it wouldn't make sense in these two games, and I didn't really care about the story. But overall, I had a ton of fun with them, and Doom 3 is still one of the few games that gets under my skin even to this day.

What made Doom 3 special for me were the visuals. It felt like such a leap for it's time: specular lighting, complex shadows and interacting with computer screens in real time.. I remember playing this on low settings with bump mapping off in 20 FPS. Seeing it on Ultra for the first time was breathtaking. I don't get the same feeling with newer games these days.

I loved the flashlight mechanic in Doom 3, it was very unique and made exploration and combat encounters more tense. I hated how it was removed in the BFG edition, it made the game way to easy and removed all the tension. Thank God the original game still works and runs fine on modern PC's.

I love this game so much. I love the tension. And let's not forget the AMAZING SOUND DESIGN. The atmosphere in this game is 75% due to the sound. It's not perfect and has it's issues, but for me, its just as good as 1 and 2, just different.

I only got to play Doom 3 and its expansions last year, and I'm glad I'm not alone in seeing it doesn't deserve all the hate it got. Yes, it's not as action heavy as previous Doom titles and Doom 2016 (which I absolutely love), but id went for the other important aspect of the originals, their hellish environments and turned that up to 11. It's very atmospheric in its tone, and it was a blast to play. I love the series returning to its more arcadey-feel, but I'm very happy I got to play it. It's Doom-Life, if you will ^^

Hell no! I love the flashlight mechanic! It adds tension to a horror game. Look at the BFG edition, being able to use flashlight and weapons at the same time ruins multiple parts of the game, (the parts where you have to fight in very dark areas) takes away tension where you have to fight in the dark. Learning how to manage the flashlight and weapons feels just right.

I'm doing a playthrough of doom 3 now. (Didn't have a game system when it originally came out). I played it being well aware that it was meant to be a horror survival game, going the whole nine yards with headphones in and lights off like I'm playing outlast with guns. Lol. Loving it so far. And slight spoiler, it gets pretty intense. The fight before you fight demonic Sarge took me way off guard. It went from crawling around in the dark fighting 1, 2, maybe 3 demons at a time to fighting horde of like 20 or 30 of them. Heavy hitters too. It started to feel like I was playing doom 2016 again hot swapping weapon combos and Sprinting like a mf. Except now on top of that, I had to manage reloading my weapons and deal with running out of stamina.

The combat is surprisingly deep. Each enemy can be taken out without taking damage if you use the correct tactics. Wait for an imp to throw a fireball, dodge and sprint in for a shotgun blast. Duck under tentacle commando attacks and shoot them. Use the plasma rifle to deflect mancubus projectiles. Wait for z secs to stop shooting, then pop out and headshot them with the machine gun.

Hell ye man, Doom 3 is a must play. Never understood the hate. Its still Doom, just with a good horror aspect and a bit more intensity. Do yourself a favor and experience it. Its worth it.

Doom 3 was a big part of my teenage years. It was the first game I was truly excited to hear the announcement of as early at 2001ish when we saw the first demos and images. The game running on the radeon 9700 pro in the 2002 demo was absolutely classic and I truly planned on getting a radeon 9700 pro. I never got one, and eventually ended up with a much weaker Radeon 9550 in january 2005. After I got my Athlon XP 1700+ hand me down from my dad with 896mb DDR pc2100 memory and I bought my radeon 9550 to replace my dads dead geforce mx or whatever it was. Then I was finally playing Doom 3! I loved it to death and purchased Resurrection of Evil in 2006 when I finally had money to buy it. Even though my pc was a bit underpowered for Doom 3 I still enjoyed 800x600 at 30fps in mediumish settings. a couple years later in my freshman year of college in 2008 I built a new pc which could truly max doom out in 1280x1024 and I finally had a sense of completion. It was that urge to finish Doom 3 in its full glory which pushed me down the path of pc gaming in general. Doom 3 is still my favorite doom game for more than just nostalgia though. as a kid I knew games would eventually look better, when doom 3 game out with its more true 3d approach and real time shadows that is how I pictured doom would be. It was not fast paced, but its the slower pace and horror aspect which made the game feel more realistic to me. I really love Doom 2016 as well, but absolutely despise Doom Eternal. Doom has evolved a lot over the years, but honestly after eternal it is time for the next quake. I would say wolfenstein but that franchise turned to shit after new colossus. We just need another game on Doom Eternal's engine and that would be excellent. It absolutely boggles my mind how well optimized doom eternal was, yet we have not see any new games on the engine. I admit part of it might be to do with microsoft purchase as they own DX12, and Doom Eternal's engine ran on vulkan. Politics once again prevented a great thing from happening...

This game IS AWESOME! It's importance for DOOM 2016 success is undeniable; if it wasn't for the diferent took on that game, Doom 2016 would be considered "more of the same", tending to fail. This way, we could not even get Doom Eternal.

The game scared the crap outta me and I was a teenager back then. Unlike new Doom 2016 and Eternal, this game was realistic and it made me feel like I was actually there struggling and trying to explore in scary environment and survive from the invasion of hell.

I loved seeing the Mixom Corporation ads and other Easter eggs in Doom Eternal, a nice nod to Doom 3 where they were introduced.

I sat down to play this when I was 12 years old, alone, at night, with the lights off. I shut the PC off 5 mins in and traded this to my neighbor for star craft. Game scared the crap out of me.

i played classic doom 1 and 2 (had doom 2 first) when i was 6 (shows probably that i am a little bit older then you are haha). but at that time that game scared the living hell out of me. and played it every second of the day i could. and till this day i still play classic doom with mods. Doom 3 i finished a couple of times dabbled in some mods which have great mods for the game as well. its a good game. never really liked it at first. but its a good game nothing bad to say about it. and the fact that john carmack pretty much did everything on his own makes it even better.

I remember getting Doom 3 on Xbox and it was my first time playing a Doom game. I was really turned off by the flashlight so didn't play it. Fast forward to Doom 3 BFG Edition on PS3, and I finally got to experience Doom 3 with the flashlight being mounted to the gun. Made the game easy though the flashlight dies and you need to recharge. End up beating Doom 3 and it was actually good.

The annoying thing about it was that unlike the other dooms, you didn't get instant rip and tear action, there wasn't a lot of ammo or health packs, and u had to reload so it takes longer to kill demons

Been playing it 4 the switch recently. Only payed £2.49 for it and enjoying it throughly
