This. This right here, officer Zeptaan. The best part of Zeppelin Armada. The storytelling promises you a climax and BY GOD does the DBP team deliver! The setting, the narrative snippets, the gameplay flow, everything has this sense of escalation that can only be sated by slaughter. That quantum stone is important and Hell is NOT gonna deliver it to you without a war sequence. Hah, I predicted when you were almost done with the time core switches that you were gonna miss the secrets, and I was right 🤣 The combat, while a cakewalk for you I bet, is exciting and engaging and motivates the player to keep working, pushing, hitting buttons and wiping out the opposition until nothing remains. Personally I think those invulns are redundant too, and the way to access them is not blind-friendly. For the longest time I thought you had to Archie jump to get to them, which is perfectly fair and works well. Special shout-out to the music. It pushes that sense of urgency, power and adrenaline that slaughter fights bring to the table. It hypes me up until I'm caffeinated and tugging at the leash to push on ahead. (I'm just sad I could never track it down - the wiki says it's "Theme of Thunder 1" by Tsukihito, but I don't get any results from searching either the title or the name of the composer.) Finally, congrats on beating it first try! Sure, Capybara practice dulled the edge that this map normally has, but it's still a slaughtermap with plenty of Archies and Cyberdemons, so things can easily go wrong. (I'll comment on the ending in another post.)

In the past I would've been upset that I accidentally finished a map without all the secrets, but now I can only be impressed at how the tension/urgency of the final fight made me rush to destroy the quantom stone immediately. Every other map I've ever played would make me stop and say: 'I don't have all the secrets yet, let's turn back'! The only way that could've happened is by some great storytelling and really setting up how important the destruction of that stone really is😄

What an absolute banger of a WAD. I find it batshit crazy that it's ineligible for a Cacoward. Good job on a deathless run, it's been great to watch my man

Wow, that was a nice final fight! And well done getting no deaths! 32:48 LOL, I know that pain of regretting the voice you picked on the fly. I did a series on an indie game called Flat Kingdom once that had a lot of dialog. One character in particular hurt my throat with the voice I chose in the moment, but the voice was fun, so I stuck with it. 33:47 Whoa, it's the house from the start of the WAD! I remember the first dialog was right next to those barrels on the right. That last map was really satisfying. Yeah, it was sad, but it brought everything together, and the items as breadcrumbs were a nice touch. (Especially since just following them gives you 100%!) I also like how they made the credit switches give 100% kills. A very nice wad. I agree with your assessment. There really aren't a lot of good wads with an actual plot and cutscenes. This one handled these aspects very well, and that didn't prevent it from also having fun, rewarding game play, with challenging but not impossible fights and memorable map design. Very nice. I'm glad you made this series! And congrats again on completing it with zero deaths!

So, that ending. I freakin' love it. Sure, it's nothing we haven't seen in fiction before, but the execution is almost flawless and I can't help but be invested in it. It knew how to play with the bread crumb progression through the void and gave time to bring up all the call backs - such as Dexter's house, Arturo the cat being name-dropped all the way back in Leaving Remnant Square [map05], delivering the letter we've read in the text screens, and Judy's identity (which I never suspected for a single tic!). In the end, we pick up another -partial invisibility- quantum stone, return back to the not-so-invincible Flying Time Fortress, and re-tune the time core to do as Arturo is ordering us. Time for another adventure... And who knows, I could be coping here because the music was hitting extra hard and making me feel things, but there's even hope we run into Dexter's wife Elena. Judy says they lost her, but _not_ that she's dead, and she was the original time and quantum stone researcher, Dexter is only continuing her work. She could have been sent tumbling through time herself from mishandling a quantum stone, who knows. Would befit a Jules Verne story and be more interesting for a sequel than "your wife passed away". One extra nice detail is how pressing the time core switches are not just the way to display the credits, they're actually what you need to do to progress and it even makes sense from the plot's perspective. One last thing: don't sweat the return to Whistlestop Harbor by the end. Every DBP that I know of loops like that, from the final map back to the first.

I'm not sure if it was noticeable at all in the video, but the ending was making me feel things as well - almost to the point where it was getting harder to speak... didn't really expect that to happen at all, but I suddenly had to keep my composure 😅 Good to know about the loop at the end for when I visit other DBPs, thanks!

@@Vytaan It's probably really not common when you play a game like DOOM on your channel, but I found that my emotional reactions get amplified when I'm recording. Something about the vulnerability of knowing you're going to be watched disarms the part of you that resists emotional influence. DOOM does have fear, shock, anger, and other strong feelings, but much less common is stuff like this, where you're hit with sadness, melancholy, and loss. A lot of KZbinrs seem to overdo it with their reactions, but there really can be an amplification of sensation through the performance side of the parasocial experience.

Guess i'm kind of late catching up on the series, but I'm glad you enjoyed the map. Nice job on the deathless run. Since the projects try to cater to players of all skill levels, I decided to let the player control how many enemies they unleash at once, which works out pretty well for a blind run :] I'm very happy that the story landed with you. It was not planned at all from the start of development and we basically put all the story elements together (including my two maps) in the final 2 weeks before the deadline. It never would have happened without help from Indigo who is a very talented creative writer (also did the intertext and some mapping for the cutscenes), Mr.Uhhh (mapping for the cutscenes) and our indomitable project lead 40oz. If you liked the story elements and are interested in seeing how they have developed and culminated into ZA, you can check out DBP50 which has some story elements by Indigo and myself, and DBP51 & 52 which both have some story stuff from me as well. Dexter might not return for a while, but no doubt we will be trying to push this technique farther in the future.

Thanks for leaving comments and for helping create this wonderful set! Crazy that the story was done so late, I never would've been able to tell. Interestingly, someone on my Discord also recommended DBP51 for its incredible storytelling, so ithat is definitely something I'll check out when deciding to play another DBP 😄

WOW! Excellent WAD! Every level was fun and could've stood alone in their own right. It never got boring or repetitive. The story, action and the stream punk aesthetic were all perfectly executed, as well. I hope we get to see more of Zeppelin Armada in the future.

I'm so glad you chose this mapset, thoroughly enjoyed all these playthroughs. I'm usually not into the backstory stuff of doom wads, but this final map + credits map is amazing! So creative, and emotional, wow. Great job from all involved with Zeppelin Armada. I hope you choose some other DBP projects, they may not all be as unique as this one but they have a LOT of good ones with many clever ideas. Thanks Vytaan!

Hob's Barrow happens to be where the NPCs' sprites were ripped from. 40oz thought it was some forgotten old game, and when he found out it's a recent indie game on sale, he gave the shout out we see here, bought a copy of Hob's Barrow, and had the NPCs redesigned to be more original.

The final battle is not so bad, unless you're stupid like me and try to press all the switches at once. :o Apart from one or two maps, this WAD is top tier. Auger;Zenith is of similar quality (minus story maybe), but with cyberpunk aesthetic instead of steampunk.
@DinnerForkTongue
@DinnerForkTongue 12 күн бұрын
Personally I rate Zeppelin Armada comfortably higher than AUGER;ZENITH. The plot integration, NPC interaction, unusual setting and unique palette scored a lot of points with me. Plus, it's significantly spicier and more exciting. AUGER;ZENITH is phenomenal, but Zeppelin Armada is on a whole different level.
