I made my first attempt at mapping in 1994. It was a really difficult experience back then as there was no 3D view whilst building, so you had to imagine what the rooms would look like, then save, load the map up and double check. Then go back and re-align your textures and light levels. Most of us left the floor and ceiling heights as they were (0,128) because it was too much effort to try and adjust them. Even creating a door was a thankless task back then - no auto-generated sectors or auto-assigned sector tag numbers. Here ends "Old man yelling at cloud"

God that sounds like an uphill. Just like me when I'm trying to align the projectile source with the sprite of an attacking monster (so, for example, the Cyberdemon's rockets come out of his arm cannon and not his pelvis) - there's lots of launching the game, testing, closing, tweaking the code values and relaunching Doom to test again. Only on a much larger scale for mapping. Bless the soul of whoever created Doom Builder.

Me channeling Elrond: I was there, Decino! Thirty years ago! I was very young when Doom came out, but I played it (perhaps inappropriately) Remember, too, that in '94, it wasn't about UV Max'ing everything. It was about the survival, the experience. I quote E1M8 "It wasn't supposed to be like this..." Maps were an art form, a story teller, as much as they were a playable experience -- that hadn't all been done ad nauseum yet.
@Andy_Paluzzi9 ай бұрын
I played a wad from 1994 called Slaughter Until Death, which was featured in the top 100 wads of all time, and it's actually really good. Obituary, made by the same mappers, released one year later, is even more impressive, since it's for Doom 2 and it has custom enemies and weapons. So it's not all janky from that era and you can still find some forgotten gems from the past.

I remember having a disc with 250+ levels like this on it that my dad bought back around 1995-1996. This most certainly looks like it could have come from that or another disc like it. Basically 250 levels of “baby’s first Doom map.” At least this author seemed to get close to the enemy/ammo balance. Always fun seeing these old school maps that were released in the mid 90s. Really shows you how far the community has been able to push these games.

I was born in the 80s and since my parents were sorta against me getting a game console back then, I started my gaming world via PC, in particular the first-person genre. The first games I got were the ominous Zork Nemesis and yes, DooM 2. The vastness and textures here already foreshadow the explorative & eclectic nature of DooM 2 & other Gothic setting games to an extent. Thanks for introducing this map and bringing back memories.

Welcome back, decino. Honestly, the ending of this map is fascinating. Modern Doom maps would usually give you a way to kill the horde of monsters, but in this map the intent is to run the heck away! It's a different mapping ideology. Also that stairway with barrels on both side was pretty awesome; almost cinematic.
