From what I've seen, that's what the company had in mind, but originally the Doomguy was sealed there by the demons. Because the demons *fear the Doom Marine*. I think lore entries establish that they call him the Doomslayer, and while they fear no human, to them, the Doomslayer waking up is their version of the End of Days.

The Doomslayer literally could not be killed by any demon. The only way they could think to kill him was to collapse one of their temples ontop of him, and I think that was mostly just them getting lucky.

The secondary fire on most of the weapons are great especially when fully upgraded. A fucking machine gun rocket launcher! A cluster grenade launcher! Triple homing rocket burst! A triple-triple barrel chain gun turret!

Turret mode on chain gun is best. Second is Stun Bomb/Super Shotgun switching back and forth. Stun bomb works on every enemy in the game but bosses. The only downside is the splash damage hurts you just a little bit.

Philp Yung The name "turret mode" made me doubt it at first. Then it went KA-CHUNK and I was like awwww yeah. With the "rich get richer" rune it is OP imo. Infinite ammo when at 100+/75+ armor.

I like to think that Doomguy intentionally let Olivia open up a portal to Hell, just so he could keep killing demons. At one point it was just a pane of glass between them for a solid 20 seconds; Doomguy could have at least tried to break the glass or rip the door open with his jaw-shattering fists.

I have to disagree wholeheartedly about the effectiveness of the weapon power ups. The siege cannon upgrade to the Gauss cannon absolutely annihilates everything, and the micro-missiles, when fully upgraded, are an absolute blast (pun intended). The shotgun grenade launcher, while not as devastating as the BFG 9000 or rocket launcher, certainly did quicken the death of any demon I found. Even though I disagree a lot with that point, (and the platforming that I had no trouble with), this review is infinitely better than IGN's. IGN's review was so horrendously bad that I decided to complain about it on another review's comment section.

I honestly stopped using the normal grenades once I got the syphon one. Its the perfect one, restoring heath, once you get full health, armor. It was made for DoomGuy!

I'd suggest Id most certainly reimagined the mechanics. It's still in the spirit of old-school, but taking plenty advantage of the vastly better, more capable and responsive input controllers we have now vs 1993. And far superior world and physics design, allowing movement and gameplay pace on a completely different level. The push-forward combat is bloody awsome, but I'm not sure it would have been quite as refined and viceral an experience had they tried to implement thatexact same principle 25 years ago.

@@brigidtheirish Oh absolutely. That and a whole lot more. Just IMO I don't feel the old-school _game mechanics_ in it, but the spirit and feel of old Doom is most certainly there (and more). For my part anyway. I still get many of the same tingles, tensions and high pulse I did as a kid playing a game I really shouldn't be playing, back in 1993 when I got a hold of the shareware version of Doom. But the evolution of decades of tech made possible some incredible reimagination, and Id thankfully stepped up to the plate and applied it well in the end, with proper Id gusto and balls. IIRC they scrapped what became Doom (2016) multiple times, having gotten very far in development but realizing no one in the office was particularly keen on actually _playing_ the game. Thankfully Zenimax and Bethesda Softworks (Zenimax's publisher arm, Bethesda Game Studios had no part in Doom) took a hands-off approach and let Id do its own thing.

@@pr0xZen I actually played the original Doom for the first time a couple months ago in anticipation of Doom Eternal coming out. As an aside, I was ten when the game first released and my folks were a bit more aware of my computer activity than yours apparently were. Or just more strict about what they thought appropriate. Mom, certainly, seemed intent on keeping all our entertainment G-rated for as long as possible. Anyway, yeah, Doom is still playable (and fun) today, if you remap the controls to something that doesn't force you to skip all over the keyboard and up the resolution so the screen doesn't become a brown blur. On the other hand, not being able to jump or *look up* would kill a game now. Doom was exciting in 1993 because there simply wasn't anything like it. Wolfenstien came close, but the engine limitations left all the levels looking pretty much the same. The garish colors don't help its playability today. Doom was *the* killer of productivity in its day and I'm *thrilled* that id has retained 'no one's working on Doom because they're too busy playing Doom' as a benchmark. I'm just as thrilled that Bethesda stayed hands off (at least for Doom 2016) except for saying, 'finish the game or you won't be making another one.'

There's still plenty of joy in those old games ❤ RE: on background; I was 11 (when my dad got the original Doom shareware, and Wolfenstein 3D, from my cousin), and my parents were pretty laxed on the content front. Instead of shielding, we talked a lot, about reality vs fiction. I had a very down to earth understanding of violence, where they did a little bit of shielding were the more complex emotional adult themes.

You mean the abundance of them? Well, to be honest, any less of them would have been too few. Recklessly wasting health to regain it is just the way most fights went for me at least. Constantly waving between 10% health and 100% health between every kill. On Ultra-violent, health is something you're suppoest to run through really quickly, only to pick yourself right back up. Ususally it would be armours that would even the odds more-so than an abundance of health. Weather or not that's good game design is up to whom you ask it of, but I personally liked that the game further encouraged me to play it a bit loose. Running face-first into enemy fire, because there's always a pick-me-up somewhere instead of always cowaring behind walls and boxes, afraid for my health-management.

Glory kills are a fun mechanic on nightmare difficulty because you have to think twice whether you put yourself out of position for +5 health. So you do them only when it's convenient, which is not that often.

No- most original doom fans also love this reboot- I however, am one of those that loved the survival horror(ish) turn that Doom 3 did. The darkness pierced by your flashlight, the brooding atmosphere, the more in depth story. For me, taking what they had done there, and scrapping that in favor of a more unrealistic approach (no weapon reloads, no dark scariness, ammo and or health spewing out of killed monsters like they'd just ingested a pharmaceutical/ammunation store) just makes me not want this game. The only selling point for me is the snap map. I'd love to hear what John Carmack thinks of this iteration of this game.

I do like the game, it's one of the best FPS so far, compared to a lot of crap. But I like to hear criticisms about it, because there are 2-3 things I didn't like, it's not as perfect as people make it. The player speed could still be faster, it's not that the game is not fast, but you always struggle because you walk slower than original Doom, while monsters are faster and more clever than old Doom (which is a good thing). I am sort of ok with glorykills, they just dissorient me for 0.5 second and sometimes projectiles are coming towards me just after I finished the glorykill, the result is loosing the health I just got and more. But anyway, I don't expect it to be 100% Doom, they did some compromises for the console crowd, yet it's a good thing for modern FPS. One thing I like is the verticality and climbing double jump thing, although it gets tedious because there is no quicksave. Again, chosing checkpoints simplicity for console guys, why not both? And I tried the Snapmap, it's very restricted. I will continue playing classic Doom mods and making maps for classic Doom.

Bethesda Game Studios didn't touch Doom at all. It was left entirely to Id, thank f**king god. Only Bethesda relation, is Bethesda _Softworks,_ publishing it. Bethesda Game Studios and Bethesda Softworks are two completely different companies. They're all owned by parent company Zenimax, and Bethesda Softworks is its publishing company.

You're on that, I always loved the lock-on rocket launcher. There was something cathartic about quick-firing 3 rocket's into a Mancubus after swiveling around his fire for a few seconds. When it came to the Assault rifle, I always needed that for more precise fire-fights from a distance, so I always kept the aiming scope on that. I had quite enough blunt fire-arms between the 2 shotguns, rockets and chainsaw, something more equipped to handle more delicate shootouts is where I need the the Assualt/Plasma rifles and Glauss cannon.

It is a beautifully gory game, the game play feels good, the asthetics is glorious, the music.. the music.. there's no word for it.. maybe "Metal as fuck", I think Mick Gordon who composed the music was told "Yeah, fuck them up, and make them like it." and he succeeded. It's brutal. Doom Guy is now the most badass character I've ever had the pleasure to experience and play.

3:35 - The ledge grab thing from my view isn't an absolute bad thing as you sometimes need a quick escape from demons, and it also helps tell you where to be going. When I seen a video of some of the game in action, I saw green lights on certain ledges where you could climb up, you know, because doom slayer guy is green. It's kind of the same thing Valve did with Left 4 Dead. They used light sources to guide players through a map, whether it be the head lights from a car, or a light fixture above a door. You may not have noticed it, but your brain did.

The upgrades definitely aren't shitty on nightmare mode, I use them probably more than I used primary fires at this stage. Agreed about the monsters taking you by surprise though, I wish they didn't always just spawn with a really obvious portal thing. Nothing like walking down a narrow corridor in Doom II when suddenly the walls drop into the floor and you find yourself in a much larger room surrounded by dozens of demons. Either way, this game is awesome.

Plus, you're immune to enemy attacks during them and for a short time after, and, unless something says otherwise, they always give you health. (And the less you have, the more you get. If you're near tip top shape, you'll only get like 5 health, but if you're on your last legs, you'll get like, what? 30-50 health?) They are GODSENDS in Ultra Violence and above. (especially in Ultra Nightmare. Final Death, anyone?)

I'm surprised Yahtzee was down on the alternate firing modes for the weapons. I got a lot of mileage out of those, to the point that the starting shotgun became a designated grenade launcher. Some are more useful than others, but they generally added some spice to the normal gameplay.
