You forgot the *_DOOM SLAYER'S_* love for his pet rabbit, Daisy.
@fwostyshrakes18704 жыл бұрын
What's funny is Daisy wasin originally meant to be a tongue-in-cheek joke, *an ironic retcon* by the devs- & remember that their programming lead, John Carmack, once said in respect to the importance of Doom's story, "Story in an action game is like story in. porno; It's expected to be there but it's not what's important."- Doom *originally* ended with a slow sweeping camera pan of an expansive vista of an Earth flower meadow populated with random rabbits. As the camera slowly crawls over a distant city on the horizon we can begin to see smoke rising & one of these rabbits has been decapitated & its head impaled. Leaving us with the assumption that Earth has been subjected to attack. We then get the fully retail release of Doom 2, something the first Doom did not have. Taking full advantage of the fact they now have a publisher, GT Interactive, id Sofrware now rerelease their classic which was originally only available via mail order. Seeing an on shelf, post-Doom II retail release, id included a new, hardest chapter in *The Ultimate* Doom, which tried to bridge the stories & circumstances between Doom 1 & Doom II- with their trademark perspective of story being insubstantial in an action game, their guiding logic was thusly, "Sure we just recycled the final boss from the last chapter again in this chapter's conclusion. What's that? You want a narrative explanation for all the extra gameplay you just got in this bonus chapter of the game? Fine, how about this- You know that dead bunny you saw at the end of last chapter? Well that was your pet that the demons killed, so you needed to take revenge, which coincedentally explains your motivation for the last 8 or 9 levels of gameplay. *Satisfied?"* It amazes me how the seemingly transparent, ironic & humorous elements of this explanation aren't immediately apparent, & how most take the idea-- that what was seemingly a random bunny in a large, expansive, wild field also coincidentally just happened to be Doomguy's pet-- literally.

Personally I prefer the increased complexity. In ultra violence you basically always need health and ammo so there is no evaluation. Just hitting flamethrower as often as possible when enemies get close, chainsawing often, and otherwise staying airborne and bouncing back and fourth once you find a good path until everything is dead. Once you realize staying airborne is the key to avoiding much damage it makes both this and the last game relatively easy, with a few exceptions here and there.
@VGamingJunkieVT4 жыл бұрын
Full mastery of the Meathook makes it so much funner, because you can just shoot the armor out of enemies and it regenerates its use so much faster than the fire belch. @PotatoPatatoVonSpudsworth Жыл бұрын
I have to disagree on the narrative point. The previous game was elegant in its simplicity, but more importantly it worked almost entirely with concepts that didn't NEED explanations. Hell, Mars, space station, factory, cult lair, all these locations made intuitive sense and kept everything relatively grounded. There was loads of interesting lore, but it existed only to add extra depth to what we already understood. Then the sequel comes racing in with Argent'Dnur, a full-blown fantasy world with dragons, knights, and buckets of unintuitive Warhammer 40K lore that stuck out like a sore thumb. Unlike Hell, Earth, and Heaven-But-They-Didn't-Call-It-That, Argent'Dnur has no ties to the religious lore that has defined the franchise for almost 30 years. Meanwhile while the Makyrs stylistically fit in great as doomified angels, they suffer from goofy fantasy names that directly contrast Doom's classically straightforward style. It'd be like calling demons "Brekyrs." I get not wanting to make christians mad, but there were WAY better options than forcing in Tolkien names. Call them "seraphs" hailing from "Elysium." Easy synonyms that are JUST archaic enough not to ruffle any feathers while still being tied directly to the heaven-and-hell mythology. The most frustrating part is that they easily could've made the story work just by swapping Argent D'Nur out for Purgatory. Purgatory fits perfectly into the established theme of religion-based alternative dimensions, and its supposed to be a place where people toil and suffer for angels to redeem their souls. Doomguy 100% could have served the Makyrs as a soldier in Purgatory, and we could've left the alien fantasy planet that is inexplicably populated by humans to the codex entries.

Doom 2016 is so barebones it looks like a demo compared to Eternal. Is Eternal less diciplined? Of course, it's obvious the game had a feature creep problem. At the same time I found it a milion times more fun than 2016 which made me drift away since the halfway point because of how barren it was. "Keep it simple stupid" works if you have nothing left to add without it breaking. Devil Daggers is an extremely simple game but with just enough depth I kept on repeating the exact same combat encounter with a single weapon available for hours on end. Doom 2016 was an extremely simple game but once you ignored all of the "oh look, oldschool, shiny" novelty it got boring the moment you reached the BFG. *stares at cutscenes* Mhm yeah ok. Also dont just say "you can skip the cutscenes" The cutscenes werent designed for you to ignore (unlike level design or codex entries) and the only reason you can skip them is because that's just modern game design, even if everyone liked doom guy's expanded story everybody would hate it if you couldnt skip the cutscenes.
@papayer4 жыл бұрын
@@zedmercury2605 nothing in game design is meant to be ignored if you're taking the bird's eye view approach. the game lending you the chance to circumvent the storytelling elements if you so desire is a welcome addition, and it's not like the content delivered in the cutscenes was abysmally bad or anything. most of them involve the doomguy being his usual angry self which 2016 already established for his character so it's fine.
@zedmercury26054 жыл бұрын
@@papayer hmmm, well, I misspoke.... It's not necessarily *meant* to be ignored, but by going 90% the way of optional holograms and codex entries, the game is making its worldbuidling and larger story easily ignorable because what's in those codex entries doesnt have to be read to neccesarily understand what your next objective is, so they're designed for those who want to take the time out of their day to read them and not for the casual player. Cutscenes are a different story, cutscenes are specifically made to give you direct context to understand what is going to happen next, simply put, a cutscene, skippable or not, is supposed to be paid attention to more than a simple codex entry or hologram. It would be like saying the story in Metal gear solid 4 is easily ignorable because it's cutscenes are skippable, when in reality its cutscenes are designed to be watched in order to get whats happening at all in the gameplay, its fundamental game design, and it's an approach I do not think fits doom. And Doomguys backstory, while interesting on paper, conflicts with his appeal. Everyone knows Doomguy as a very simple character with a very simple goal, that's what made him interesting because it was a perfect contrast to the more complicated setup of the world around him, give doomguy a "tragic backstory" and it takes away his main appeal.
@papayer4 жыл бұрын
My point is that the content that is delivered in the cutscenes is already well apparent to anyone already and not much in them is really vital to the story, save for a few select ones here and there that touch on another character's backstory (like the betrayer, the only example I can think of). As far as Doomguy goes, his persona is never really expanded upon per se. You could make a case for the whole "Slayer = Doomguy" reveal, but again it's not like everyone wasn't already well aware, and I fail to see what about that amounts to a tragic backstory.

To be fair though, the jumping and swinging on bars part can be haphazard and frustrating and does slow the action down somewhat, but I can live with that due to the battles. The Marauder is a pain in the arse, but that again refers to the part where you have to be a bit more strategic and not relying on the BFG as a get out of fights free card, as it usually was. The fact that you think that the Doom Slayer doesn't care about anything that's going on and is an unfettered chaotic ID that only cares about killing demons and collecting powerups, shows that you did not at all pay attention to the story in the first game. The first thing that he does after you are freed from the sarcophagus is to miraculously accesstechnology which he's not supposed to have any knowledge of, to find out the casualty rates of the inhabitants of Mars during the invasion. His response to learning that most of the people on Mars have already been killed is one of devastation, and borderline defeat. The point of the game of Doom is to appeal to the typical FPS shooter gamer, but the character that you play in all the games has always been someone of overwhelmingly high moral fiber. If most people found themselves in the situation that the Doom Marine finds himself in, their desire would be to get off of Phobos, as quickly as possible. he doesn't do this though, because he knows that if he doesn't stop whatever is happening here and now, it will spread to Earth. In Doom 2, his goals are to deactivate an energy shield that is keeping the ship's holding the remaining of Earth's populist from taking off and heading into orbit. This act leaves him as the last living human being on Earth, and even with this as the case, he does not attempt to flee. He instead attempts to find a way to the source of the invasion and shut down the power source that is feeding the portal allowing the demons on to Earth. In short, the Doom Slayer has never been an uncaring character. He has character that cared deeply for the rest of humanity...and also fluffy bunnies.

He says _"When there are entire levels devoted to tracing through empty hallways learning the history of the Doom Slayer",_ and then he implies that you HAVE to sit through cutscenes and dialogue while also impling that the Codex entires are mandatory, or that they forcefully add to the aforementioned lore time, which is wrong. There is only one level that comes close to that, and even then, it is a level devoted to a boss fight, and the "lore hallways" are something you run through before the fight. If you choose to skip the lore stuff, you can make it to the boss arena within 1 minute or less. Plus, you can indeed skip the cutscenes, you don't have to read the Codex entires if you're not interested, and aside from dialogue you're likely to hear when you return to the Fortress of Doom after completing a mission, the dialogue will not slow you down or interrupt the gameplay, and even with the Fortress dialogue, you'll likely be going around and using your Sentinel Batteries and whatnot to unlock and collect stuff, so you likely won't be just waiting around to start the mission. Also, and this comes to subjective things, I'd disagree with his complaints about not being able to tell what is a climbable ledge and having to stop and weigh up what to do with a bunch of fodder demons. I thought the climbable ledges in the game were pretty obvious, and it never took more than a second to just glance at my HUD and determine if I needed to use the Flame Belch or Chainsaw on fodder demons.

He could skip the cutscenes, but then he wouldn't able to review the story completely. Although, I still think that he could have word it a bit better too

Both positive and negative reviews and even the director have commented that Doom Eternal is a hardcore shooter, that's not for everyone. The timeless aspect about the originals (disregarding graphics) is that it's a very pick up and play experience. Which is a thing that seems very hard to do, for AAA games, yeah they can be accessible, but there's a lot of waiting on the game to load, and there's a lot of things for the sake of giving the illusion of choice. This is not a criticism but an observation, since to be fair, the originals are also pretty cheap nowadays, so I can't blame developers wanting to make you feel the price tag of a new game.

Just because you "can" ignore something doesn't mean the game should be evaluated as if you had. If something is in the game that doesn't work, the ability to ignore it is meaningless in the context of the review, because the only way to know if you didn't like it was to experience the thing you didn't like. Skipping only helps in subsequent playthroughs or for the truly uninvested, in which case: why was the game not able to generate investment? If the lore was something he thought was bad, that's worth noting. It's also worth noting how much time and effort the game devotes to it. A major chunk of this review was talking about how the game's devotion to creating Doom lore missed the essential point of the character/franchise. If you disagree with THAT premise, fair game.

Yatz is getting old and slow, that's all the reason behind those criticisms, except lore lel

Regarding points about lore, it's worth remembering that people were paid to write that stuff and then others were paid to put it in the game. It wasn't just put in willy-nilly. And Yahtzee is critiquing the lore in the context of the DOOM Slayer. The writers thought it was a good idea to include all this stuff about the backstory of the dude. But if the extent to which they do it undermines the "joke" played out through the rest of the game, then they're (again, as Yahtzee said) basically doing the same thing they're suggesting you laugh at characters in the story for doing. And that makes no sense.

To be fair? I feel the whole part where humanity learns bugger all from a major disaster is not exactly out of character for us.

Hi, my name is Ternal (I know weird name) and I dont know why but now everybody is asking me to do them. Everything is "Do me Ternal" this and "Do me Ternal" that. I mean I'm honored but also very weirded out.

2:34 - Just Flame-Belch, Ice-Bomb, Chainsaw regardless like a habit. They're basically unlimited with cooldown anyways, and with the inbetween-arena chances are it'll be usable once you get there.

Games should really have multiple tutorial options like "Tell me controls when I get a new weapon/move", "Remind me of mechanics that haven't been used recently", & "Give me strategic advice". Some games just won't stop telling me how to use a weapon even after I've played the game for several years but, if I turn off all tutorial messages, I won't get prompts telling me vital information that's impossible to guess which becomes a problem if I take a break from the game for a few years or I'm playing a new mod level. Valve's games are a major example. They'll tell you how to use something while you're already using it but, if you turn off the advice, it won't explain a scenario you've never seen & will never see before that relies on completely unique mechanics. I recently killed an A.I. ally in Left 4 Dead 2 because the game wouldn't stop telling me to give him my extremely important pills even though, if I did give him them, he'd take them immediately while there are no zombies around & then just stand there & watch me get killed later after his pills have worn off. I then died because, without him, my other A.I. allies quickly died making me the only target.

I like that Doom Slayer is Doomguy. Let’s face it guys it wouldn’t be Doom without imagining Doomguy with his Brutal Doom voice in every game

LOLed at the running gag of "THE DOOM SLAYER" with the Lego version saying, "Me like big ones"! Also funny are the imps getting blown into bloody bits! And the COVID-19 references and "Send rice, toilet paper, and Cadbury's Creme Eggs" Easter reference! :D

Personally I loved the increased strategy, it essentially meant that your head was going to be firing on all cylinders or else you die, or you turn down the difficulty slightly and go full ape mode.

I do love that. It can be played strategically or played as just "I kill" depending on difficulty
