Lieutenant/Leftenant I thought it was a throwback to the military having confusing ranks that were too close together, similar to how "port" and "starboard" came about. It used to be something like "laboard" and "starboard" but in the middle of a storm or a battle with explosions going on, the crew might mis-hear the captain and run to the wrong side of the ship.

The word lieutenant in British English is pronounced "lief tenant" because it has been influenced by Greek. In the Greek alphabet to say F we have two letters, the letter φ and the letter υ. (Although the second one is used only in specific words and situations.) So you seeing the similarities between u and υ.. the Brits changed it to lieutenant (lieftenant)... it may have been changed when the Brits were in control of Cyprus or when they were in control of some Greek island back in the 1800s to 1900s.

I think Lieutenant became Lef-tenant for the same reason, they wanted to say it faster, but it was hard to say fast AND clear so people ended up adding a consonant "f" because it required less of a shift in your mouth to pronounce it. There you have a possible reason for why Leftenant came to be

well french indeed is a language built by elites to split them from peasants , so they created many shitty rules so the one that doesn't know must not be from the great elite. At first it's base on Oc language (Occitan, at south) and Oïl (at north),so they pick on each language to create a new that every one could learn easily but only elites can master. Truth is French grammar rules really sucks ...( trust me i'm french ^^) i was Dev at a point of my life and it's kind melting great C language with some Brainfuck everywhere (>_

funny thing is that we were talking about english in general in Human Geography on Wednesday. so apparently it had to do something with europe and how when they where once really weak and they kept getting invaded and they had to change languages and so they adapted to all thoughs languages and mixed them into a whole new language. so basically english is a shit ton of languages combined.

Lef-tenant was a direct reference to leaders of the rank of tenant. They stood to the left of the captain of a regiment awaiting orders to give to their own sections. They were also in command should the captain need to leave to take care of business elsewhere. Lieutenant was the french way of spelling/pronounciation of doing it. The reason the Americans use the french way of this goes back to our fight for independence from Britain, when we received combat training from experienced french commanders and leaders. Hope this helps yaa along doom. Take care and fly safe o7

+DooM49 (Some British people, and also all other Commonwealth armed forces, to be clear) There is fair evidence (in terms of how the word was spelled in middle english) that both "lef" and "lieu" pronunciations have coexisted for some time. The French word "lieu" (place) on which the word is based, is occasionally seen spelt in old French as "luef". Codified spellings and pronunciations of words is a distinctly modern invention - for most of the time before, things were a lot more vague. On the next video you can ask why sergeant is pronounced Sarge-ant :P
