Awesome works, Robert! Volvo cars are some of the most serviceable, modular, and well built cars I’ve ever mechanic-ed on! On other makes, that motor would’ve been hardwired in. In the shop I help out at, whenever a car has some ridiculous, unfortunate or costly issue, I often retort “they should’ve bought a Volvo”. I love these cool little cars. They’re like clocks, but less tedious.

Worked a dream! Took less than an hour. I used a half inch wood chisel to remove the motor cover: popped off, undamaged, in seconds. On the driver's door lock I had to put the key in the lock to align the lock mechanism. Used a strand of wire from a battery cable in an 's' shape to replace the thermal switch - quick and easy and worked fine.

Hi Robert, Yep, my 99 V70 has this problem too. I was looking for an actuator at the salvage yard. Never would have imagined this may be the source of the problem. I do not have a remote key, but it may at one time. My passenger door button goes down when I hit the lock button, but you can actually still open it from outside. It won't pop back up when I hit the unlock button. Thanks again!!

@@RobertDIY not mine, they were identical but had different colors, black and Grey. Also I had some kind of aluminum plate between the lock and the door that you didn't have in your video. Would have been easier to access by removing it but then you would have to loosen the window engine etc so I ignored that. But again, I switched the cable harnesses back to the correct position and now everything works fine! My car is a 99 S70 so maybe they changed something on that model.

I found that the (physical) key would not unlock my old V70 when the battery had died. After getting the car unlocked I was able to remove the door panel and lock assembly, thanks to your video. As it turns out, the rotating lock actuator pin wasn't inserted into its receptable on the lock assembly. An easy fix after watching these instructiond. After watching one of your other videos on removing the door panels of a Jaguar XJ, I was able to fix an electrical problem in my old Sovereign, so that's two I owe you. Thank you sir!

Great video Robert. My driver latch functions properly electrically but latch part that grabs body holder to keep dooor shut has something internally sticking so door will not latch properly (latch does not engage. if I pull door handle and release from fully extended (so door handle kinda slams back) something in mechanism clicks and door will close shut as it should. Do you think this can be fixed with lubricating something in mechanism? Thank you for advice. All your videos helpful.

Hi, Robert. I enjoy your videos. I can see the thermal protection device becoming over-sensitive after years of use (circuit breakers can do that also), but is there any chance that the motors are heating up due to dried up lubricants or something. If the mechanism is no longer moving freely, the excessive current could heat the motors up. Just a thought.
@RobertDIY
@RobertDIY 7 жыл бұрын
Nope.
@GWBridge

Okay, I believe you, Robert. I used to work with x-ray machines in hospitals that have a lot of moving parts that were connected to motors. One machine had to transport a loaded film cassette quickly into the radiation field to take an x-ray. There were two circuit breakers, one for each direction. These would eventually become overly sensitive and trip when they shouldn't. You could spend all day trying to find a fault in the system that was blowing the breakers, but it was the breakers themselves that were bad. They also protected the circuit by sensing heat (due to current through a resistance). My locks are sticking in the V70 that I just bought, so I was wishfully thinking. I don't mind the mechanical stuff, but I hate dealing with door panels! ;-)

Awesome detailed video. One word of caution , you can fit the electronic connectors to the door latch motor backwards if you aren't sure which way they go. I did and at first it simply didn't work on the one door. But now none of the door motors respond nor the trunk latch. And the car won't start either now. Go figure , anyone run into similar issues?

Hi Robert! I have a 94 850 that has a few door lock actuators on the fritz. I opened up on today and tested the motor and it seemed to be running OK, also tested with the 9v plugged in to the two wires in the wiring harness which was also OK. For some reason, the motor doesn't function when plugged into the vehicle. Windows work as does the trim light on the door, and no obvious damage to the harness. I pulled the #6 fuse which looked OK and my last bet Is the Door lock relay under the dash. Any chance that it could be busted even though 2/4 locks work?

The driver's door did all the weird stuff - like unlocking and opening itself while on the highway and then recently the driver's do inside handle stopped opening the door. The cable is still attached and is pulling so I assume that it is something in the latch. Should I just replace the latch or do you think I could repair it?

could this be the reason i can't use the the power locks on my car? if i try and lock all my doors from the driver or passenger door or use the lock unlock button, you hear a buzz or grrrrr noise from the power locks. and it does what it did in the video some will lock others will not. sometimes they all will lock but still get the buzz/grrr noise.

Hi Robert, my 2008 Volvo XC70 inside driver side handle doesn't open the door. So I must roll down the window and open the door from the outside. I need to fix or replace the inside door handle. So how do I take off the door panel for me to take off the handle to see what part is broken or came loose. The power switch to lock and unlock the doors works normal. When I'm rolling down the window to open the door from the outside, some times the window goes down very slow, not normal speed.

Do you know how to repair the switch inside these locks, that recognize whether door is open or closed? When this switch wears out in any of the doorlocks, the footlight/doorlight will not turn off even though the door is closed and alarm will not arm because the system think the door isn't shut.

I have a problem in my 99' C70.. I have the remote key to unlock and lock the car and to open the trunk, the trunk opens just fine with the remote but the doors lock/unlock ( i can see the door lock inside the car coming up and down when i use the remote key) but it doesn't let me open it, only when i insert the key.. I can't figure it out because.. if i open the door with the key and then lock it with the remote, the door will lock (visually) but it will still open if i pull the handle outside the car! Is it common on C70? or is this just another headache

Going to give this a shot on my 98 V70. Useful info! Have you ever tried QBond on something like the lock motor casing? Its basically super glue on steroids and fixes most materials. Cost me about $17 at the car parts place but one box had lasted all year. It's a must have for me as I work on older cars as well and some of the parts are getting hard to find.

I tried this repair but wasn't able to successfully put the motor back together after removing the thermal switch. I was admittedly a bit ham handed when opening the motor up. But it occurred to me: with the two S70's I've owned this issue has only ever been with the rear door locks, the front locks have always worked just fine. So I wonder if the front door locks don't have this annoying thermal switch? I pulled a couple of front door lock motors from the junkyard and installed them in the rear doors of my S70, so far they're working great. And it's a lot easier than the electric motor surgery method here. To me at least. Assuming you have a junkyard near you of course. I've been meaning to pull a couple more front door lock motors at the junkyard and pop them open and confirm my theory that they don't have thermal switches. Does anyone else know by chance?
@RobertDIY

They have them. I didn't realize that the front door latches will bolt into the rear doors. 🤔 You will loose your child safety locks but most people never use them.
@wrybread

@@RobertDIY I'm only talking about the little motor, which looks identical, and I don't think affects child safety locks? I don't know how those work though so maybe I'm wrong. But it looks like the exact same motor. I haven't opened one up to check for the themral switch. But odd that I've never seen a front door with the issue. Maybe people just replace those more often?

Hello Robert, it is absurd that Volvo would use a motor where a simple solenoid (or pair of solenoids working push pull) would work far more reliably. I have a 2000 S70 where both rear door lock motors got lazy. To top off that stupidity Volvo placed the finger stems at the back so to reach the stems from the front you have to stretch far to reach. These motors are just low priority on a long nuisance fix it list on a car that's hanging in by a thread after 254000 miles. The most annoying is that everything (entire body) squeaks and crackles even on a smooth road
