I thought of it as well but I guess, as he said when he talked about walking or exercising, that the point is to not "fast from dopamine" (eliminate it completely), but to take away those activities that give instant gratification. I guess (personal opinion) that if you get dopamine by doing something difficult for you, something challenging for you, that's fair and fine. I am also "triggered" by this challenge, but I know that it won't be easy. I guess that is the whole point: eliminate easy gratification to give more space to long-term/hard goals

Laptop lockout tip: sharpy & tape timeseal. This works for me to 'seal' my commitment: I use (scotch magic) tape to seal my laptop. Meaning I put tape over it so it cannot open. On this tape I write the date on which I can open it again. It's like a timeseal. When I do this I really commit. No BS, no excuses, no unplanned circumstances (so if there's a chance I might need to work I shouldn't use this trick). Since i've never broken the seal before the date I wrote on it, it's really powerful. Just a tip.

Hi Andrew Kirby, I just finished my 24 hr dopamine detox and this is my experience: 1. I chose the beginner mode and started at 4 am on 3rd of May and now it’s 5:30 am on 4th of May 2. I am a college student so shutting everything down is unrealistic for me so I did these measures to make sure I am close to the terms so please tell me if I did anything that’s not allowed in order to have the full effect : A. I shut down my laptop and my phone and put them away. B. I need my iPad to study so I put a down time on all the apps except for : the documents app that has all my lecture notes and textbooks, the Google classroom app because I had an online quiz so had to use it, my workout app and my meditation app. C. I didn’t watch TV except when I was eating with my family and they were watching it, although I turned my back and didn’t watch except some glances which I think didn’t give me any dopamine because that was a boring news channel anyway 😂 3. I’ve got so much work done today and felt clear minded, I studied for 2 hrs, read a book for 3 hrs, worked out and did some yoga afterwards, took a hot bath for one amazing hour, made a meal for my family and helped with the dishes. 4. It wasn’t easy, I spent couple hours fidgeting and wandering around the house feeling the urge to pickup my phone or any device and just chat with my friends about some silly thing I can’t remember or wanting to watch KZbin so badly or just googling that mundane idea but then I picked up my book and started reading I had 60 pages left to finish and I finished it, that was so relieving. 5. I asked Siri to tell me jokes and played with the accent and voice from male to female in the settings. Is that considered a dopamine shot ?? 😂😂 Finally I would like to say thank you for this opportunity Andrew, I feel lucky to find your channel in the right moment of my life. In the past, I attempted to do something along the lines of being offline for a day but never succeeded and disregarded the whole project or cheated but now here there’s a sort of accountability that I feel and that what made me write down my experience here to feel accountable. I’m still in for the next level !

read for motivation in the time of quarantine I’m in quarantine (as we all are right now) and I’m stuck with my family in one apartment, so not talking to anyone, even when going to the kitchen or to the bathroom will be impossible. However, I really want to do the intermediate one, so I guess I’ll modify it a little bit - I will allow myself to talk (as little as possible, not like discussions for hours) with my relatives, but I won’t be able to go for a walk. I’m really excited to do this detox, because I cannot really hold myself accountable anymore, I can’t commit to resolutions for longer than 2 weeks or so. A year ago, I managed to quit sugar and this year I quit white flour and potatoes (and I’m really proud of that) but then, I realised that I could achieve goals only if they were based on „not doing something” rather than „doing something difficult”. I tried for about 4 years to motivate myself and commit to for example regular training sessions, but I failed every time. The urge to stop, rest and eventually to give up was too strong. And you know what? I’m sick of it. I want to overcome it, I want to be the person that really can achieve everything that they want. Now it’s the time - the quarantine, as awful as it is when reviewing the circumstances, provides as all the opportunity to really make some changes in our habits. To clarify, we have always had that opportunity, but quarantine reminds us that we are the masters of our time and it is really only up to us how we will manage these 24 hours in a day. Personally, I think I would regret for a long, long time if I had an opportunity like that and wasted it on social media and procrastination. So it is time, let’s change our lives.

Finished 2hrs ago on Time Theorist level... now the real challenge boiz, lets do this. Though you might not be religious or spiritual, I would recommend that you create somewhat of a ritual. It is about signalling to "your " mind (saying to yourself outloud is also great): "I'm letting go of the habits, thoughts, feelings and identification from the "previous me", to give birth to this "new me" , a new me who embodies _____ (insert here all the qualities you're striving to have and live)". Wish you all the best on your journeys.

I think I have been using my boyfriend as an escape, talking with him gives me instant gratification so much so I would pause my life, ignore my problem and work just to talk to him and when I can't I seek other things like gaming or Netflix. I knew this wasn't right, but it felt good and I couldn't get myself to stop. I see it now and I will do what I have to to change it.

This is really amazing stuff. What's interesting though is that the "time thereorist" is exactly what we (muslims) are recommended to do during the month of Ramadan when we are fasting. We go to the mosque and stay for a few nights no phone no frivolous talk, just prayer, self reflection and pondering of gods words.

I Found your channel by coincidence by clicking on your comment on Ali Abdal's video, and suprisingly I found a lot of videos about dopamine detox, when just a few days ago, I did a 24h dopamine detox beginner mode (but didn't drink coffee & tea) when I didn't see this video, it was meant to be for 3 weeks until ramadan starts but just 24h and it was a disaster as I got serious withdraw symptoms in the next day (like headache and vomiting..) from not drinking coffee even for 24h, so I decided that I'm just gonna gradually decrease the dose instead (which still gives headaches but at least no vomiting), and because it was a feeling of failure, I kind of let myself fail more by eating things I marked that I wouldn't eat, but after watching the graph video I realised that I'm at the moment of hard work and small result, and that was a good reminder that I'm not gonna let myself fail again because I didn't get the results I was expecting.

As an introverted person I have done the detox many times. It isn't hard for me. I know what you want people to do and I applaud you for it. What I find difficult to do is finding a path that will make me money, I'd enjoy and want to stick to. I move from hobby to hobby and I have learned so many incredible things. I apply my self to things from start to finish. I know the answers are within me but I'd be buggered if I know what it is. I'm now 36, I'm working a shitty job, I support my family who I love very dearly but there is something missing..... I've tried to find that something since the day I could walk, talk and had self awareness. Does anyone else feel like that? Like there is something missing, like a piece of your very soul needs to be found to be completed? Maybe it is just me.....

On top of school work, etc, it felt like I was just lost and I to fill that empty void I had just started to resort to my bad habits that took me months to break off (excessive Porn and Masturbation, staying up and deteriorating my sleep schedule just to play video games, breaking my Keto Diet and eating lots of junk food, etc), which I know realize that those bad habits in themselves have done more harm to me due to the fact that I automatically resort to them instead of trying to better myself and seek change so I can get out the dark place that I am in right now. So with that being said just thank you once again honestly for introducing me this whole concept of a "Dopamine Fast", and trust me when I say that I will be participating this upcoming Sunday (still looking for an accountability partner too if anyone is interested), and will be attempting the Time Theorist tier as I feel that even though this entire concept is new to me, I need to push myself to my extremes and my limits if I wanna be a fraction of the person I know I am capable of. So once again thank you, and I'm looking forward to starting this journey of not just self improvement but self evolution with you and everyone else who' has decided to take on the challenge. :)

I've already seen tons of personal development concepts on "getting things right" but as you said the "dopamine fast" was so on point that it's crazy to see how simple this thing is when practically laid oud. The most relatable and practical concept that I can think of is by Dr. Jordan B Peterson. Also looking for an accountability partner but only if you wish to go international since I'm representing Brazil here haha ;))

I did this a few months back and for about a month I was de-toxed from playing video games. I started enjoying socialising, reading and making music a lot instead and it all felt very valuable. For a while. But after giving it a proper shot it also made me realise that I don't want to become the next hit composer or take any of those activities to a higher level. They're fun to turn to every now and then, but the big point here is not feeling bad when I choose to play games instead of doing something more "productive". I just don't have the ambition to make anything crazy amazing with my free time. So now since moving back to a big city (London) I've partly relapsed into playing video games again but I still enjoy social situations a lot more and I occasionally create music. The fun thing is that by giving myself more time to try and compose and read and do other things, I discovered that while they were fun and a lot more creative than playing games, this didn't necessarily make my life feel fuller. Instead, it made me realise that I don't need to feel bad about playing video games by not pursuing my creative goals. I could just view it as a pleasant way to spend time, just as valuable as doing something creative.

Will mostly meditate, journal and lie on the floor. Also I include guitar and singing as last resort if I really can't stand the boredom.

This is totally amazing! I'll stick to the intermediate level, since I want to keep exercising and journaling. I'm also excited about the topic "Who am I?" and I want to dedicate this Sunday for rediscovering myself. I've made a few attempts before, but i couldn't manage to write for longer than 10 minutes. Nothing would come to my mind, and i would get distracted about anything that just comes to my mind. Maybe I day with no distractions would help me do better. Thank you for your content! And i hope all of us succeed on this journey. Let's keep in mind that there are other people all around the world who do the dopamine detox on Sunday, every one of us for our own reason and purpose. Love from Romania.

I'm all in for this. From some of your examples, like going on your phone to listen to music and podcasts in rooms of your home or in your car, I'm starting to see where I could cut back for the 24hr period. Now, this might be a little backwards, but I'm a binge reader. I have novels I get from the library, fiction and nonfiction, and I tend to spend hours of my day wasted between the pages of a thriller or fantasy story. I'd like to take control of this habit, because I'm aware what I do is negatively affecting my production. I want to spend more time writing novels and short stories. I read to put it off, or distract myself from other work. I'm also binging youtube more recently. I watch videos about fitness, retro anime, and videogames. I do use youtube for background music, meditation, and yoga/workout videos. Not sure if it would be negative but I'm willing to go all out for 24hrs to reset my neurolinks. Thanks for creating this free program. Your willingness to share your knowledge without a price tag is immeasurably valuable.

@michellete85454 жыл бұрын
It’s kinda funny how the people in our lives are almost always an obstacle to be better. I explain things to them and they’ll go out of their way to get me to eat during fasting time or watch a show with them when I decided I need to go study etc. I just say it again and walk away. You can’t improve if everyone around you can’t respect your request for peace. I usually invite my friends and family to join me and when they don’t I’ll just say “Ok but understand that I will go through with this so I won’t be available for x,y,z until this is over” Be honest, don’t hide from your wife and kids and if there is something she needs from you (that isn’t watching Netflix or something dumb like that) like a task then help her out so she can help you out by keeping the kids from bugging you too much. I was able to finally get my sister to start exercising every weekend with me. People will resist but slowly they’ll join you in your quest for a better life. Stick to your guns!!!!

I think it’s an important point to make that willpower is not only finite... it’s completely useless. Do NOT try to use willpower, you will fail every time. This is why very few people are able to use willpower to beat things like addiction. Don’t feel bad about it, it’s been proven over and over again in countless studies. Like you said, it takes far more than willpower to change. You have to change your environment, too. The people who are most successful at achieving their goals never put themselves in situations where they would need to use willpower in the first place. That’s why it’s so important to literally lock yourself your phone rather than simply trying to use willpower to resist using it.

Today I tried a small dopamine detox to see if I‘ll get motivated to work on my business. What I did was in the morning I shortly checked my phone, drank a coffe and said to myself that I won‘t be using the phone until 17:00. I turned the airplane mode on and placed the phone on a place I couldn‘t see. After about 3 minutes I got bored, started the computer and worked on my business. It wasn‘t fun stuff. I had to do research and create a business plan. Suprisingly I was enjoying working on my project because there simply wasn‘t anything else I could do. I even took my lunch to the computer to keep on working (normally I watch netflix while eating for like 1h - 2h). It actually worked so good, that I took a look at my phone on 17:00, replied everyone and put it back on airplane mode. In the end I was working on my business until 22:45!! I really was struggling the last weeks to get motivated to do anything for my project. 3hours of work were soooooo hard to accomplish but now... I will try the beginners detox this sunday but if you‘re keen on already testing a smaller detox try to lay away your phone and put it on airplane mode. Hope this helps someone. If so please let me know (also if it didn‘t work for you :P)

I think this dopamine fasting is truly the key to success. I can watch all types of motivational and inspirational vidoes and do some great workouts and study for a couple of days but then simply get sucked back into the black hole of KZbin, netflix and social media and throw all the productivity away. Once I eliminate all distractions I will have nothing to do but focus on my goals and dreams. The question is just if I can keep the dopamine fast up for an extended period of time, the longest I did it for was 4 or 5 days when I studied for a math exam with full focus and no distraction. I believe if I manage to cut out KZbin, netflix, social media, porn and all that bullshit to no more than 20 minutes on workdays and maybe an hour or two on weekends (porn cut out completely of course there's no beneift to that whatsoever) I can reach my goals.

Same. I guess we have a really rich imagination. Can thinking about anything all day. And even if I try to close my eyes and don't think about anything, my brain starts to show me some cool places, stories, movies and other things which don't even exist. And it's really hard to stop thinking at all. Keep thinking about non-related things even when watching 2 youtube videos at once at 2x speed, while fully understanding the content... And I hate it... Guess I'll have to force myself into thinking about not fun (have to find them yet) things. Or maybe just think about things you usually don't think about. Like thinking about yourself -- who you are, who do you want to become and how to do it... You can think a lot, but thoughts are worthless w/o an action... I have to act.
@zoelin18913 жыл бұрын
I can relate! Yet, I'd recommend looking up guidelines and practicing meditation daily ("Waking Up" is a decent meditation app). Talking from my personal experience, when I meditate, such rich wild thoughts will give little to no dopamine. And all kinds of existential deep senses are experienced cause we rarely have a second when we don't identify with thoughts and relying upon them to give us a sense of secure self/reality. So I think meditation in the "time theorist" is all about clearing away the dopamine-fueled illusions that distract us from facing and recognizing our state of existence.
