Dorawaka Cave- Warakapola, Sri Lanka
This cave is located in the village called Dorawaka belonging to Warakapola in Kegallla District. This beautiful village can be reached by a two hour drive along Colombo-Kandy main road. You can reach this cave in about half an hours journey.
In addition to pre-history, it is said that this is the place where King Walagamba kept his elephant during the time when he was hiding.
About 50 feet high, about 65 feet long and about 15 feet wide this cave is formed by two rocks joining on top of each other. And it has openings on both sides. This cave was mentioned in the souvenir named 'Ceylon antiquary and literary register' (1918) & 'Report on the Kegalla', written by H.C.P.Bell: The former Commissioner of Archeology. 1919 Mr. V.F.R. Brawnie has commented on this cave. In 1951, Mr. Deraniyagala copied the existing symbols in the cave. It has been found that these caves date back to 12 500 years according to the Carbon 14 data.
