ZombiU Retrospective & Critique - Aggressively Mid

A retrospective look and harsh critique of ZombiU. I compare the WIiU and PS4 versions, talk about the story, gameplay, and even go over the asymmetrical multiplayer on the WiiU version. Beaten only by the Infected from The Last Of Us, the Infected of ZombiU are the second scariest infection-derived monsters I can think of. It's because of this game I've been experimenting on making a spiritual successor focused on real location based world exploration, scarce ammo and permadeath on the game creation engine Dreams.

@@ajimbob4878 I've done the first survivor model, I've done a tracksuit infected, I'm building the Nottingham Quarantine Zone where all survivors will spawn. I may do the intro sequence where the first survivor is rescued by the military while they are scavenging.

You think last of us was scarier in premise or in the actual game?

@@fulltimeslackerii8229 Premise definitely, with checkpoints and autosaves in The Last Of Us, the infection barely feels a threat, whereas in ZombiU, the gameplay is scarier as every Infected is a shambling plague vector and one bite, your character is permanently dead.

Hey man, just wanted to say that i think you are a really talented game journalist / reviewer. The tone of your voice and the way how you structure and voice sentences, makes listening relaxing but still keeps you engaged in every topic. Even smaller ones. Your writing and recording is great, and always matches the footage perfectly. I just think that you should maybe put a bit more focus on better known games, if they are of course interresting for you to wright about. What i personally would love to see is something like just cause 3 or assassins creed unity. They are both quite old now but were talked about alot and are interresting to review imo. Anyways, keep it up👍

I don’t like horror or scary things all that much but I wanted to play ZombiU. The game fascinated me. So I decided to play it with my girlfriend. Me and my girlfriend are long distance and she was coming to visit. I told her I wanted her there with me while playing in case I got scared. She said to me and I quote “don’t worry. I’m good with scary stuff. I will protect you from the zombies”. When we eventually met up we started playing it and she got so sacred from the first zombie (that was demobilized and couldn’t even hurt you) that she had a panic attack (she was fine) and I had to comfort her. She was so embarrassed and I still make fun of her about that to this day

I played through the entirety of this game on release for Wii U, and played through the multiplayer against my sibling with an Xbox controller we gaslit into thinking it was one of the pro controllers. We played the game all the time, and actually enjoyed playing it. Your reload and pickup bug for the multiplayer is one of the most common bugs we dealt with.

The fact that it's set in the UK and you're using guns 99% of the time is dumb. Guns are ludicrously hard to come by here, you're not gonna open a random's fridge and see an AK47 with 10,000 bullets most of the time. For a zombie game in the UK to work, it would just need to be British Dead Rising

tbf, ammo is scarce in this game especially so for high end weaponry like assault rifles and smgs. and when you do find ammunition, it's usually found in places that would have been fortified like buckingham palace and the tower of london. though it is strange to me that you can find TWO shotguns in residential areas and a bloody smg in the basement of a nursery lol

New viewer / subscriber here and I just wanted to say I love your videos and channel. Your videos are really well put together and so entertaining, really loving getting back from a long day at work and winding down by watching these! Also, for a little more info on the name 'Blighters' for the zombies and 'Blight' for the outbreak, I'm English, and blighter is actually a slang-term here in England used as an insult. It's usually given to men / boys and kinda means that they're irritating and an annoyance. But obviously a 'blight' is another term for something that's ruining something else e.g., 'Kevin was a blight on their day out'. I just thought it was interesting and cool how they used an English slang term as a name for the zombies, it's super unique and funny for me to hear the zombies called something my Granddad would call my brother lol

I always interpreted the dirty screen effects as the protag wearing eyeglasses that get dirtied, since that's a thing I had to deal with in the army irl. The only thing putting a damper into that interpretation is there's no cleaning mechanic & protags don't visibly wear any.

I can get the slow charge for performing an attack since on the other versions it's like our character can easily pop someone's skull open in one light swing. The slow charge is like someone trying to deliver a heavy hit. Also you're telling me I didn't have to delete my save where I thought all my stuff was gone when I could check the CCTV.

You are not alone. Ghosts are number 1 for me. Not because I think they are real, but because my subconscious seems to love using them in my nightmares. Seeing them in a game or movie is just feeding it ideas. Fatal Frame is forever off the table for me. All that said, unless there is a lore reason for them in Zombie U, then it feels out of place. Was it your survivors' deteriorated psyche? Then why not other instancesnof you slowly going mad? Or perhaps the developers liked the school sequence in FEAR 2, which was the best part of that game.

Ubisoft Montreal really needed another year to cook, they where passionate about development from all the concept art and planned ideas that got scrapped. But they had to make the Wii U Launch. Like you said you can really see the potential. I like how the manhole covers act as bonfires and how many of the areas felt unique in their theming. I recommend playing without melee for a real challenge, theres more than enough ammo in the game to duke it out without the repetitive bat-bonking.

Repeated uses of a hard P sound don't always translate the best when recording voiceover. Some takes sound fine, others you get the pop(even with a pop filter and foam dingus)...so pad itself was annoying to gamble on...but mostly Jerry sounded funnier to me.
