12:50 in my experience as a child, I’d get really embarrassed for being wrong. Like raising my hand in class and getting the answer wrong. So I think it might apply here as her being too embarrassed to lose or to come second to anyone.

Ellie did that with your grades to make herself feel better. Using you as an example of failure (in her mind), made her feel special, smarter, etc. She was using you for her own ego.

22:04 I totally get where you're coming from, (cus I used to do the same thing) but over time I've kinda figured out there's not much of a difference between kindness and selfish kindness? if you're selfish about being kind but smart enough about it you just are kind. after all, being kind is how you make those connections that matter yknow? I hope you aren't too hard on yourself about this kinda kindness, cus it's still kindness at the end of the day

I hate when people have a very obvious “they’re weird” look at friends in front of others! Like I’ve definitely done that look, but I’ve always made mine really subtle and it’s usually only used when I’m super uncomfortable and feeling unsafe. It’s like a way to check and see if my friend is feeling the same and letting her know how I feel so we can get away

That ice cream story reminds me of something that happened in the first grade. In first grade I finished my work early so my teacher told me to read but I didn't want to read because I'm dyslexic and really not good at reading. Especially back then. So at the end of the work she took everyone to get ice cream in the cafeteria except for me. For a teacher of special needs kids, she wasn't great at that.

I've come to realise that most people are deeply uncomfortable with other people being multifaceted individuals, and anyone that deviates in any way from stereotypes assigned to them based on their gender/race/religion/sexuality etc is (whoever people think you should be), challenge their worldview and sense of safety, because if you can't characterise people into neat groups then you have no idea who anyone is (the truth) and that's terrifying. I believe this is why groups that have a high degree of unignorable spectrum are so targeted in society. It's the idea that there's a grey area that goes well beyond our comprehension in every aspect and inside every person. People would rather simplify everything down than feel the sense of unease that comes with extreme complexity. And we see that again and again, everywhere. I think there's actually a lot of truth to people being scared of trans and gay people for this reason. They really do see us as a threat, it's just not for the reasons they state, they're totally blind to how hard they work to keep themselves in their safety bubble.
@LilacilАй бұрын
To relate this back to your story, jess, It sounds to me like she didn't see it as you being better or worse than her in a certain aspect, and just as you being more or less valuable than her, and you making her feel a sense of insecurity made her feel the need to prove to herself that you were inherently worse than her. A lot of people don't care about the truth of anything, which is hard for us neurodivergent people to understand. They just want to be comfortable and right. I see myself as just so happening to be myself and see situations that happen to me or others as coincidentally involving me, or not. So, i can easily empathize with others and see the situations i find myself in from a view outside of myself, and because it's more objective, that is what i default to. In my experience, most people don't care if what they believe is objectively true, or if their actions are objectively wrong, if they can find a way to convince themselves that they're fine. Your ice cream story is a good example of how someone with empathy can still find a work around to benefit themselves when they want to.

I had fake friends like this in 7-8th grade I was sad at Frist we didn't go to the same high school but I'm kind of glad we didn't go to the same school cuz all of my classmates and Friends ended up going to another high School in the city but I ended up going to the high school closest to my home and I'm kind of glad I didn't go cuz after that we all got to high school we all everybody we all used to hang out with we all split up we all used to mainly hang out because we were the ones that liked anime and manga but when we got to high school we all found other people who like that kind of well except for me I was at a different school I never found anyone who really liked anime manga at my school in the one girl I was still close friends with and will talk to and I'm still friends with her to this day and we still call each other on our birthday she ended up leaving the school around February around the same time I left the high school I was that and I remember I ran into our other friend that we were still kind of okay with her name was Corey if I'm remembering right and I remember she talked about how she was glad that we all kind of split up she did miss me and my other friend but the other girls we were friends with who were just always kind of fake she said that she was happy that they weren't interacting like they used to because being around them was so draining and she always thought they were fake and they would always start fights with people for the most random reasons I remember they did that to me and 7th grade after becoming friends with me like I maybe 3 months in a couple of them started ignoring me because they thought I was annoying and then we didn't talk for like the rest of the year but then in 8th grade after we talked to each other through some emails we end up kind of becoming friends again and we sort of stayed friends on and off throughout 8th grade but by the time we graduated we just never make contact with each other again my one friend who I'm still in contact with at one point after we had all graduated did try to see if we could all meet up but only the two of us ended up meeting of the others never showed up

She competed with you and put you down becaude she only became your friend out of pity at the start, if you become better than her at anything she can't pity you, and if you tried to compare it back she'd feel she was getting pitty, which by her personality she'd hate, she had to be better, to feel like she had a higher standing, you were also something for her to compare herself to, to make her feel like she was better, the best even, tho, nothing you did or said was wrong, even if you changed how you spoke she would've reacted the same, so just don't blame your approach, you were a kid, and just weren't great with social etiquette

I am curious did your friend have older siblings? I feel like when it came to the grades that she may have been doing to you what she felt like her parents would do to her with her siblings (did you say she had a sibling and they had a large age gap?.)My sister is almost 8 years older than me. She was the head in the books 24/7.365. Studying her conjugated verbs for Latin class even on Christmas. Brought her books home every night even if she didn't have any homework. Had practice for either marching band, volleyball, cross country, track, cheer. The perfect 4.0 honor student. Still the Latin teachers favorite student when I entered into his class for Latin 5 years later, and he made that very clear. Then I enter high school hated school, did not do any sports because I was Mercer Moose, thunder thighs, hungry hungry hippo. I had mainly D's on my report cards, Super Social butterfly, missed 1/2 of my freshman year, 1/3 of sophomore year, 1/4 of my junior year (that was the year that they finally had me meet with the school psychologist and found a lot of issues with what was happening to me while in class by other students and teachers alike. I ended up in special Ed for being an emotionally impaired student with a high IQ of 148 missed 3 days of school My senior year. My sister never put me down for my bad grades , my mom on the other hand always compared me to her, as did all of the teachers that we both had. Why can't you be like your sister, blah blah, blah. Her parents may have compared her in all that she did to her sibling. so in return she did it to someone she felt it would have the most impact on to make them feel the same way her parents made her feel . They made her feel like she was lesser than her sibling. Since they first befriended you because they felt bad for you puts that same dynamic into play in her mind. that's my 2 cents anyways. Hey look at you now. You are living a good life, doing what you can to be happy and to become more authentically you, I feel like you are living a successful life. One that is constantly becoming better and better. Grades do not make you you after you are out of school. Now I am very curious as to what she is doing with her life!
