You know, I always wondered why the Pokémon protagonists have all sorts of advantages when they go around beating up other people's common mons with their powerful starter with infinite free healing from the poke centers. It's for the sake of a more engaging level grinding curve.

Well, supposedly the infinite healing is applicable to all trainers, but yeah that starter is a big advantage. "Hey we got these three rare pokemon of which we only have exactly 1 of each, and you won't be able to find -usually- them anywhere else in this region! Want to have one of these totally-not-legendary pokemon?"

Pokémon protagonists just find themselves interning with famous Pokémon professors out of sheer luck and/or nepotism, where battling sport becomes their career as they aim to go pro as they travel the world. For most denizens of the Pokémon world, battling is nothing more than a side hobby just like sports are for us. Bug catchers like catching bugs. Electricians start bashing their sentient tools against each other out of boredom, but they have day job to do. Fishermen fish. Farmer raises Miltanks for milk, but sometimes they'll battle for funzies. No one really cares about type advantages and won't go out of their way to make the ideal battling team just like how not everyone is serious about Basketball. Getting into EV training and IV breeding for battling is a mark of dedication or insanity.

I always wonder why the starter pokemon are always unique and cant be caught when the Professor was "catching them".. maybe he caught them in the reagions of the next games, but it always bothered me that they are exclusive and cant be caught at least in post game routes. Would have made way more sense to get a ratata as starter or sth thats just arround the corner

@@ForumcoldiArchon starters are probably bred exclusively in labs as lab animals. Maybe their endangered and only professors can get a hold of them. Professors in turn only give them out to unpaid interns willing to fill out the Pokedex. Professors ask unpaid kids to go out adventuring and a flashy starter is all they get, so they gotta start battling people for pocket change.

In the vanilla games, you don’t really hear NPCs talk of their lost wealth (except for the NPC in FRLG, who gives you the coin case) unless it’s a Pokémon ROM Hack or something similar.

yoooooooo, that player's guide they showed briefly, i had that exact one! it had a folded insert near the back where the pokedex chapter was with a bunch of coloured stickers of the pokemon on it, you could peel them off and put one in a box on each pokemon's listing to show you caught it in the game. ....ugh, good times

It's honestly impressive how you can be an adult Pokémon trainer who presumably has been to the next town over and still not have strong Pokémon. Like it's not like the mechanic is complicated, fight other Pokémon that you find literally everywhere and beat them and capture them and repeat until you have some good Pokémon. Like that seems to be the only source of income in the game and the only thing the people care about and he's terrible at it despite it being easy.
